Carbon Motors TX7: Police-Grade Vaporware with a $150K Price Tag

By Jens Meiners

Carbon Motors TX7

Not content with a claimed 24,442 orders for its E7 cop car—of which it seems exactly one prototype has been produced—Connersville, Indiana–based carmaker and daydreamer Carbon Motors is announcing a second vehicle. A vehicle that’s scheduled to begin production at the end of next year—shortly before the E7 is scheduled to begin rolling off production lines. The massive, tank-like vehicle you see before you is the TX7, Carbon Motors’s design for transporting personnel and prisoners in high-risk environs.

Offerd from “only $149,950,” the all-wheel-drive TX7 is designed to be equipped with a 300-plus-hp V-8 diesel or a compressed-natural-gas powertrain for “communities promoting an environmentally responsible approach.” And that’s an unfortunate choice of words considering the TX7 isn’t slated to get a gasoline-powered engine and Carbon Motors already has an order in to BMW for 240,000 diesel powertrains. Those components were supposed to be fitted in the now nearly forgotten E7. Said BMW’s sales and marketing board member Ian Robertson back then: “We announced the expansion of our powertrain system sales business as part of the company’s Strategy Number ONE. Today’s agreement with Carbon Motors marks another important milestone along this route—with others to follow.” Another pillar of that strategy was selling engines to Saab, so make what you will of BMW’s method.

Past the powertrain details, the TX7 is set to get a host of other law enforcement–specific features. Not only does the vehicle have seating for 10, it also comes with infrared, thermal imaging, and weapons of mass destruction–detection equipment. And that WMD attire? It seeks out chemical and biological weapons, as well as most anything emitting radiation.

It’s tough to judge the looks of the TX7 from the computer renderings provided for lack of an actual vehicle. But even this dramatized visualization betrays the awkward attempt at carving a smirk into an intimidating metal box with all the sophistication of an AWS Shopper. (We’ll wait while you Google AWS Shoppers.) It turns out the stylistic disaster is no accident: “The TX7 was designed with the commanding presence sought after by law enforcement while still providing community friendly appearance desired by citizens and governing bodies.” Get a good look while you can, because you’re not likely to see one on the road any time soon.

2013 Toyota RAV4: First Drive and Video Road Test

It’s been a rough year for fans of white bread. The last oven timer’s gone off at Hostess. Justin Bieber‘s sprouted chin hair number two. Mitt Romney is just Mitt Romney, no President prefix. The Mayans may as well be right–could any river of lava be worse? All hope is not lost. For proof, here we have the 2013 Toyota RAV4, a crossover that so…

BMW to Unveil 2013 1-series Lifestyle Edition Coupe and Convertible in Detroit [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

By Andrew Wendler

Here at C/D HQ, when we hear the word “lifestyle,” we imagine an ambiguous term that could apply to driving expensive luxury cars and living in fancy metropolitan lofts, just as easily as it could to drinking until well past inebriation and sleeping until the following afternoon. They’re both lifestyle choices, and, as far as we can tell, lifestyles are numerous and almost indefinable. That is, unless you’re BMW. In that case, lifestyle means a 1-series with three choices of paint and a brown interior. Allow us to introduce the 2013 BMW 1-series Lifestyle special edition.

The 1-series Lifestyle is available in three exterior finishes, including Mineral White metallic, which is exclusive to the special edition. Convertibles will get a brown soft-top featuring silver pigmentation that, according to BMW, “generates fascinating light effects.” The brown treatment continues on the interior, where the steering wheel, seats, and door panels are finished in the color. The interior is accented by white contrast stitching and Fineline Stream wood trim. Specially badged doorsills and 18-inch aluminum wheels round out the package.

As far as specifics regarding whether or not the Lifestyle editions will be available across the 1-series’s powertrain lineup, BMW is keeping its mouth shut. The hush-hush treatment also extends to how much the living the 1-series Lifestyle will cost, and when consumers can opt to live it. Until then, you’ll just have to get your fill of BMW’s special-edition 1 from the floor of the 2013 Detroit auto show, where the Lifestyle 1-series will make its in-the-metal debut in January.

Obsessively Maintaining the Status Quo

2013 Toyota RAV4 - front three-quarter view

Genchi Genbutsu and Waku-Doki.

These are Japanese terms we heard quoted by Toyota representatives when describing its 2013 RAV4. Apparently the first one means “go and see for yourself” and the second means “heart pumping, adrenaline racing.”

Nice expressions, but not exactly the ones we’d choose. So we’ll introduce one of our own: “Same same but different.”

The latest version of Toyota’s compact crossover follows the same basic outline of models past. As ever, its on-road ride and handling are competent but not sporty, the powertrain is smooth and efficient and the price is reasonable. It’s a tried-and-true formula, but over the last few years, new competitors like the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape have stolen the thunder of Toyota’s original cute ute, leading the automaker to refine the mix of ingredients that go into the RAV4 in an effort to take back the compact crossover crown. Read on to see what’s new.

The Continental: Mercedes’ Longtime Motorsports Manager Departs, News on AMG, Aston, Tesla, and Škoda

By Jens Meiners

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Norbert Haug

Norbert Haug is out at Daimler. The head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport is leaving the company at the end of this year. A statement sent out by Daimler Financial quotes Haug admitting that “unfortunately, with one victory in 2012 since founding our own Formula 1 works team in 2010, we couldn’t fulfill our own expectations.” His sudden departure concludes a 22-year tenure that has seen many high and low points. Haug is a former writer for the car magazine Auto Motor und Sport, and was responsible for Michael Schumacher’s return to the circuit. The bold move hasn’t paid off well. Haug’s often-abrasive manner and earthy sense of humor has made him plenty of internal enemies, who were actively looking for a misstep. Former Formula 1 driver and airline owner Niki Lauda is calling the shots now at Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. The vocal Austrian was supposed to work in tandem with Haug.

Aston Martin

A Chaperone for Dr. Bez

After the acquisition of 37.5 percent of sports-car-maker Aston Martin by the Italian investment group Investindustrial, reports surfaced about a possible connection with AMG. The Italian investment group had owned a controlling share in motorcycle maker Ducati before it was sold off to Audi, at which moment the partnership between AMG and Ducati ended. That partnership was largely about marketing, and not about technology sharing.

Nevertheless, in the bidding war for Aston Martin, Investindustrial made much ado about its relationship with AMG. Indeed, my sources tell me that the Italians were in touch with AMG before the Aston Martin acquisition and had spoken with Affalterbach in rather general terms about a possible technology transfer. This tidbit eagerly was picked up by members of the press who began reporting that the deal would lead to an influx of AMG technology into future Aston models.

Of course, there is a connection: AMG parent company Daimler and Aston Martin have talked before. The unfortunate 2009 Lagonda SUV concept used a Mercedes-Benz GL-class platform; Daimler also spoke with Aston Martin about possible moves to save Maybach, which ultimately were discarded. All of those talks took place without external chaperones, so the notion that Ulrich Bez and Ola Källenius would need an Italian investor to facilitate talks about technology sharing of any kind strikes me as somewhat disingenuous.

That said, the Aston investor’s grandiloquence likely won’t keep AMG and Aston from cooperating: “We know the nature of these bidding wars,” a slightly amused Daimler source tells me. Both companies are exploring options. They include technology sharing, but, presently, they do not include Daimler purchasing a share in the British carmaker.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ

Not a Truck Guy, Either

I just watched the Dan Akerson interview with Automotive News, where, one year after boastfully admitting to the regrettable fact that he is no car guy, the GM CEO gets animated over Volt owners’ enthusiasm for their plug-in hybrids. That said, Akerson doesn’t seem to be a truck guy, either, judging from the look of the 2014 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups created under his watchful eyes. We all like to write about celebrity designers, but the praise for these boxy things surely needs to go to an anonymous committee. Or perhaps to Akerson himself?

Tesla Model S

Tesla Showing the Way

There was a time when automakers in Europe did not have to put their cars through elaborate cycles in order to determine highway fuel economy. It was measured at a steady 56 mph and a steady 75 mph, and it made for amazing figures. Only those numbers didn’t make you feel like a very good driver; it simply was impossible to ever reach consumption figures even remotely approaching the official numbers in everyday driving. Fast forward to electrics like the Tesla Model S—the claimed range of 160, 230, or 300 miles is “based on driving a constant 55 mph in ideal conditions,” according to Tesla. Oh, I see. I’d like to see an established carmaker plastering brochures, dealerships, and the internet with 55 mph consumption (or “range”) figures and misleading customers into believing they are attainable. More details are explained in a lengthy blog post on Tesla’s website, but still such evaluation doesn’t really give an indication of real-life driving range.

In recent official press pictures of the Model S, I was a bit surprised to see a misaligned left taillight. Not that it matters much, but expectations could not have been higher after Tesla boss Elon Musk went on the record on green.autoblog.com, ripping on Audi and BMW with observational gems like this one: “Go and look at the bright molding on a BMW or something and you’re like, ‘that sucks.’”

Škoda Octavia

A New Škoda Octavia

Musk and his chief designer Franz von Holzhausen could learn a few lessons from the Volkswagen Group, which is about to launch another very cleanly designed hatchback under the Škoda brand. The third-generation Octavia, styled under Jozef Kaban, has grown slightly; its original position in the marketplace now is occupied by the slightly smaller, low-cost Rapid. A powerful Octavia RS version will be launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer. Meanwhile, the diesel-powered Octavia 1.6 TDI gets over 69 mpg in the European cycle—and that test involves more than holding a constant 55 mph.

Second Alleged Ferrari Enzo Successor Image Surfaces Online

By Alexander Stoklosa

Ferrari F70 rear end

Ferrari’s super-duper-car Enzo replacement—internally codenamed F150—is enjoying a nice, slow gestation that has afforded plenty of time for leaked info to seep out ahead of its official debut. The latest tidbit to appear online is a shadowy image of the F150’s hindquarters, and the photo appears to be from the same source as the blurry front-end shot that showed up online recently

Assuming this is, in fact, what the production super-Ferrari’s back end will look like, it’s appearance isn’t terribly surprising. The simple round taillights that currently adorn every other contemporary Ferrari are present and accounted for, and the odd T-shaped element that debuted on the F12berlinetta is here, too. The way this teaser image is darkened, however, lends the rear end a sort of shocked WALL-E face kind of look. Regardless, the basic appearance of the car in the photo fits with shots of test mules captured by our intrepid spy photographers.

The Entry Entry-Level Bentley

I have a friend who once told me that he would never buy the cheapest version of anything. I pressed him about cars and figured he was backed into a corner when I mentioned Bentley. With only the Continental series of cars – GT coupe, GTC convertible, Flying Spur four-door – and Mulsanne sedan on offer, surely this friend of mine would go for something like the Continental GT coupe over the larger, much more expensive Mulsanne. While their base prices are separated by over $100,000, the Continental GT‘s starting price of $212,600 should still command enough respect from my friend’s imaginary – and judgmental – group of country club acquaintances.

“No way, it’s the entry-level Bentley.”

Ouch, though on some level he’s correct. Any automaker who offers more than one model technically has an entry-level option. The Continental GT coupe is that car for Bentley, the least expensive ticket that gains you access to the Flying B’s party and all the pampering, personalization and performance that entails.

Well, friend, have I got a car that’s not for you. The 2013 Bentley Continental GT V8 is the new entry entry-level Bentley that offers less of everything: less weight, lower emissions, fewer horsepower and a smaller price. Indeed, my friend might say that by subtracting four cylinders, Bentley is taking its Continental range downmarket to the point where aspirational millionaires can now rub elbows with self-made billionaires. Oh, the humanity.

First Drive: 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3

Filed under: , , , For Those Who Want Their Top Trim 3 Series Greener

The business case is pretty simple: BMW wants a green (or blue, if you like) “liaison” line of models between its standard lineup of cars and the upcoming mega-wow i models. This maximizes choices, fills all niches, and buys time while BMW waits to get those i cars just right before the start of deliveries.

These ActiveHybrid full parallel-hybrid electrics are also acting as the closest BMW can get to its amazing range of turbocharged diesel motors that not enough people want in North America and Asia. In European terms, there is no business case for these hybrid cars apart from curious and cash-heavy early technology adopters, since the EU is awash in BMW‘s wonderful oil-burners. Those beloved turbocharged diesels would be a far better product in North America and Asia as well, but, hey, let’s not get all pipedream-y, now. And, no, we’re not trolling here.

So BMW has created a lineup of pretty darn good heavier and pricier models, coining the new brand word ActiveHybrid with versions of the X6, 7 Series, 5 Series and now the 3 Series, called “F30h” internally in this case. The efficiencies gained by this powertrain are fairly good as well, so we’ll try tempering our doubts.Continue reading 2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 32013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Dec 2012 11:57:00 EST. Maserati’s Lineup Expansion to Include a Compact Crossover

A compact crossover looks to fit into Maserati’s lineup beneath the Levante, which is previewed by this Kubang concept
Maserati is going for volume. Besides the new Quattroporte and the upcoming, next-generation GranTurismo and GranTurismo convertible, the brand has officially confirmed a slightly smaller sedan called the Ghibli, and an SUV called the Levante—which was previewed by the Kubang concept that debuted last year. That’s quite the undertaking for a brand who’s lineup has consisted of an evolving pair of core models and their variants for the past decade. Now, we have learned from an industry source that the brand also is preparing a more compact SUV, targeting the Audi Q5 and the upcoming Porsche Macan.
First in the sequence of new models is the sixth-generation Quattroporte, which makes use of Maserati’s in-house developed platform. Before the end of 2013, production of the Ghibli will begin, which will be developed from the Chrysler LX/LY platform whose heritage stems back to the mid-1990s Mercedes-Benz W210 E-class.
In 2014, we will see the next-generation GranTurismo, followed in 2015 by GranTurismo cabriolet, which is called the GranCabrio almost everywhere else. Maserati chief designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti has said that it would be a more sports-car-like vehicle than the current, rather large and heavy model. But the GranTurismo will keep a Maserati platform, partly derived from that of the Quattroporte.

First Drive: 2013 Maserati GranTurismo Sport Coupe and Convertible
Comparison Test: Porsche Panamera S vs. BMW 750i, Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S
First Drive: 2013 Ferrari California

Also in 2015, the brand will launch the Levante, a derivative of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and thus a close relative of the current Mercedes-Benz M-class. But the surprising news is that one year after that, there will be a second and yet unnamed SUV, more compact than the Levante and directly targeting the Audi Q5 and the upcoming Porsche Macan. It will be based on neither an existing Maserati nor a Chrysler platform; instead, it will use Fiat’s long-wheelbase Compact U.S. Wide platform. This Maserati, therefore, will be a close relative of the Dodge Dart, the Chinese-market Fiat Viaggio, and the upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia.
A compact Maserati crossover would make quite a bit of sense, providing the Fiat Group with a product that could fit into the somewhat-downmarket void left by Lancia’s glaring irrelevance. That would explain why information surrounding an upcoming, somewhat luxurious Alfa Romeo SUV suspiciously has dried up.

First Photos of Mini Paceman John Cooper Works Ooze onto the Internet [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

Mini Paceman JCW
While it’s unclear who posted them first—De Telegraaf in the Netherlands, perhaps—photos of Mini’s Paceman John Cooper Works have spread across the internet this morning like a nasty, 208-hp rash.

No official info exists yet for the JCW Paceman, but being a Mini, many of the particulars are easy to predict. Based, of course, on the three-door Paceman—the three-door version of the Countryman, which is the five-door crossover version of the three-door Mini Cooper—this vehicle will pack the same recently updated turbocharged 1.6-liter four as the rest of its JCW brethren. That means the aforementioned 208 hp as well as 207 lb-ft of torque, all fed through either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.

The Paceman will join the Countryman as the only JCW models to offer all-wheel drive, and it will be standard. Pricing will probably start somewhere around $36K. The Paceman is expected to debut in a few weeks at the 2013 Detroit auto show. Which should please the nine people clamoring for a three-door hot cross-hatch that looks like a shoe.

Good News, Bad News: Jaguar Land Rover Gets a Line on Cheap Aluminum; the C-X75 is Dead

In the way of politicians, Jaguar Land Rover chose to link the announcement of an imminent deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which should secure a supply of well-priced aluminum for its future cars, with the news that it has decided not to proceed with the C-X75 hybrid supercar.
Earlier this week, JLR chief executive Ralph Speth signed a letter of intent with Azzam Yaser Shalabi, the president of Saudi Arabia’s national industrial development program, with which it will form an automotive partnership for Saudi Arabia. It is envisaged that the world’s largest aluminum-production complex at Ras Al Khair, a joint venture between the Saudi Arabian Mining Company and Alcoa of the U.S., will supply aluminum sheet to JLR and the partnership will set up two press lines that will make finished aluminum components for Jaguars and Range Rovers.
In addition, a new vehicle will be produced for Middle-East markets. This will be an aluminum-bodied Land Rover model that is not planned for production in the U.K. The aluminum smelter is due to be in operation by 2014 and it’s anticipated that vehicle production could start a year or two after that.
JLR’s venture with Saudi Arabia was anticipated by a recent interview in India with Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors, JLR’s owner. Ratan Tata is a director of Alcoa and keen to expand Tata’s trading links with Saudi Arabia.

Aluminum production is notorious for requiring huge amounts of energy. Saudi Arabia has huge amounts of oil and gas, as well as bauxite, the necessary raw material for aluminum production. Ralph Speth sees a guaranteed supply of quality aluminum as vital to securing JLR’s future—all its future models will follow the lightweight-aluminum-construction blueprint laid out by the new Range Rover. He expects the motor industry’s demand for aluminum to increase rapidly in coming years and without such arrangements, JLR, as a relatively small player, could be faced with a shortage or damaging price escalation.
C-X75, We Hardly Knew Ye
Price and costs are the reasons for the cancellation of the Jaguar C-X75 hybrid supercar. That started as a pure concept at the Paris auto show in 2010 but in May 2011 it was announced that Jaguar would, in conjunction with Williams Formula 1, proceed to limited production. Earlier this year Jaguar showed some of the car’s advanced technology, including its ultra-high performance, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that is combined with an electric motor to develop a total of 900 hp, and its carbon-fiber chassis. The Coventry-based manufacturer predicted a 0-to-60-mph time of less than three seconds and accelerate to 100 quicker than a Bugatti Veyron, with exhaust emissions lower than a Toyota Prius. The plan was to build up to 200 cars, with a price somewhere north of $1.4 million.

Comparison Test: 2009 Cadillac CTS-V vs. 2010 Jaguar XFR, 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar global brand director, said that the company had decided not to proceed because it “didn’t feel comfortable launching a million-dollar supercar at a time of austerity.” JLR had seen “the competition struggling”—a reference to slow sales of the Porsche 918 hybrid—and had concluded that the C-X75 project would not make an adequate return on investment.
JLR is putting a brave face on this, its first reversal under Tata ownership. It has patented nearly 100 technologies included in the C-X75 and will use elements of its hybrid system in other production cars. Jaguar won’t sell the complete project but expects to offer two or three of the five C-X75 prototypes for sale at auction some time next year.

Volkswagen Routan Minivan Not Dead Yet, But Future Looks Bleak

Saying that the Volkswagen Routan has not lived up to expectations would be a bit of an understatement. When the model debuted five years ago at the Chicago auto show, VW hoped to move 45,000 of the reworked Chrysler minivans per year. Um, not so much: The first eleven months of this year saw just 9923 of the vans find homes. The people movers are moving so slowly off dealer lots, in fact, that VW has halted production until its bloated inventory thins out.
Recent speculation has it that the Chrysler-produced minivan has been or is about to be terminated, based on Chrysler documents revealing that its Windsor, Ontario, facility—home to production for the Routan as well as the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Caravan—produced no VWs in November. But further research reveals that Chrysler hasn’t produced a VW-badged vehicle since July, which is right around the time VW models change over to the new model year. And a quick look at Volkswagen’s consumer site reveals that its minivan is the only 2012 model year left in the U.S. lineup. (Get one while they’re hot!)
If demand for the Routan were to pick up, production would follow accordingly, at least through next year. That’s based on the production agreement between Volkswagen and Chrysler that is set to expire at the end of 2013, at which point the future of the Routan becomes considerably bleaker. Our best intelligence suggests that the Routan will come to an end at the same time as its welcome in Ontario.

Some time thereafter, we expect VW will introduce a replacement for its minivan, and that’s likely to come in the form of the three-row crossover that was confirmed by CEO Martin Winterkorn earlier this year. Known internally as B-SUV, it will be previewed by a concept set to debut next month at the 2013 Detroit auto show. The production version is expected to hit showroom floors in 2015.

Holy M-class! Mercedes-Benz Presents Latest Popemobile to His Holiness

Mercedes-Benz Popemobile
Mercedes-Benz has a longstanding relationship with the Vatican, having provided transportation for Popes going back 80 years, and now the company has unveiled its latest holy ride. The new Popemobile, as the Pope’s public-appearance car/rolling display case has come to be known, is again based on Benz’s M-class, but sees a number of Pope-duty-specific upgrades relative to the outgoing model. The one and only Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board at Daimler AG, presented the Pope with his new rolling digs today.

Mercedes-Benz Popemobile
The new M-class Popemobile gets a revised holy, er, fishbowl on the back for Pope Benedict XVI to occupy. More glass area, greater interior illumination, and more standing height top the list of Pope dome tweaks. Benz also lowered the dome’s roof slightly, which it says will make the Popemobile easier to load into airplanes. (The vehicle travels with the Pope pretty much anywhere he goes.) Inside the dome, Benz again fitted a throne—yes, an actual throne—that’s embroidered with the coat of arms of the Holy Father. (And you thought the massaging seats in your S-class were pretty neat.) Mercedes says the new Popemobile could first be pressed into duty tomorrow, at the Catholic Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception.

Aston Martin Sells Minority Stake to Italian Investment Group

Aston Martin this morning announced that Investindustrial—the group that recently sold motorcycle manufacturer, Ducati, to Audi—has purchased a 37.5-percent share in the brand. Investindustrial’s minority share came at a cost of roughly $241 million, providing Aston with a cash infusion the sports-car maker says will allow it to embark on “its extensive and exciting plans for sustainable long-term growth.”
Sources in Europe tell Car and Driver that such an influx of capital would allow Aston to grow its product line past the current lineup of the Vantage, the DB9, the Rapide, and the Vanquish. The hope is to broaden the brand’s appeal, and the first step in doing that would be to add an SUV to the lineup—the Lagonda concept that debuted at the Geneva auto show nearly four years ago would be ideal. Not only would the Lagonda broaden the brand’s appeal, it also would provide Aston with a significant boost in sales in markets like Russia and China, where sports cars are slow sellers because of their incompatibility with subpar weather and road conditions.
Investindustrial’s commitment of $241 million won’t result in the Lagonda getting the green light straight away. But this raising of funds is the first step toward Aston’s plan for long-term growth, which will see the brand invest more than $800 million in product and technology programs over the next five years.

First Drive: 2013 Aston Martin Vanquish

A number of reports this morning suggest that Mercedes-Benz’s high-performance arm, AMG, somehow will end up involved in this deal. The theory goes that Aston is interested in replacing the aging 5.9-liter V-12 that proliferates throughout the brand’s lineup, and AMG’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 would make a fine replacement. Aston tells us that AMG doesn’t fit into this deal in any way, but that the English automaker is free to consult with whoever it likes. Perhaps a better theory than a tie-up with AMG is a warming relationship with Mercedes, whose GL-class provided the platform for the Lagonda concept some years ago.

Chevrolet Malibu to Get Early Mid-Cycle Makeover

Dan Akerson, CEO of General Motors, recently revealed that engineers already were hard at work on a makeover for the Chevrolet Malibu. In an interview with Automotive News, Akerson stated that the Malibu would receive a “mid-cycle enhancement, not dramatic, by this time next year,” adding that the changes would include the front fascia. Launched just more than 18 months ago, the Malibu’s face lift will arrive somewhat ahead of schedule; most models in the segment go three years or more between makeovers. Akerson also acknowledged the unflattering reviews and said that the refresh is taking place sooner than Chevrolet had been planned. Chevy confirmed both statements to Car and Driver this morning.
Once considered somewhat unusual, early life-cycle vehicle makeovers are now becoming more common. The most recent high-profile example being the 2012 Honda Civic, which debuted in the spring of 2011 to a collective “meh,” from its well-established fan base and critics. Honda wasted no time retreating to the design studio to hone the vehicle, and came back with an impressive effort for 2013.

We found the Malibu to be competent but less than inspiring, missing several of the key details that turn a transportation appliance into a class leader. To his credit, Akerson has a pretty realistic view of the situation: “I think it’s a good car. It’ll do OK. It is a tough segment and it’s one we need to be successful in. We’ll see how it plays out.”
