Is the Bank of Japan Really Easing — or Does It Just Want to Depreciate the Yen?

By Eamonn Fingleton, Contributor

Big news! The Bank of Japan is set to double Japan’s money supply – or at least that is what Bank of Japan governor Haruhiko Kuroda is currently saying. I have to enter this caveat because as a veteran of 27 years of Japan watching from a base in Tokyo, I have long since become rather skeptical of statements from the Bank of Japan and other key Japanese government agencies. Allegedly momentous developments come with increasing regularity and then seem to be reversed within months, if not weeks. …read more

Infrastructure Gap? Look at the Facts. We Spend More Than Europe

By Paul Roderick Gregory, Contributor Big government advocates seek to substitute “infrastructure” for the “s” (stimulus) word. President Obama’s State of the Union address called for $40 billion to fix the nation’s roads and bridges and also called for a federal infrastructure bank.  On April 29, he called for an additional $4 billion of infrastructure spending. $40 billion here and $4 billion there, and soon you have some real money. …read more

So employees don’t get much coaching from their bosses — and may face actual discouragement — in terms of building up their own LinkedIn profiles. …read more

The Utilization Gap: Big Data's Biggest Challenge

By Christine Moorman, Contributor Big data’s the buzz.  It’s in the press, all over the web… heck, it even has its own hashtag—#bigdata. CMOs recently reported that the percent of their companies’ marketing budgets devoted to big data will increase from 6% to 10% over the next three years.  Multiply this 66% increase across all of the other areas Big Data is showing up in companies (e.g., supply chain management) and you have a sizable strategic expenditure.  The bigger the company, the larger this increase.  In data collected from The CMO Survey, companies with sales revenue of $10B or more will spend 13.7% of marketing budgets on marketing analytics in three years while companies with sales revenue of $25M or less will spend 9.2%. …read more

Big Data Star Wars: The CMO/CIO Wars Continue

By Gil Press, Contributor Big data is a big wave flooding all corners of the enterprise and it may sweep with it the IT organization. In many companies, marketing departments are leading the rush to adopt big data technologies, eager to uncover new insights about customers and prospects in the mountains of web-related and other data they have accumulated. Last year, Gartner made waves when it predicted that by 2017, the CMO will spend more on IT than the CIO. “Some forecasts say the CMO will soon be calling the shots for IT,” Bob Evans responded, arguing that “while I don’t buy into that, I do agree that CIOs who choose to sit back and wait for ‘the business’ to tell them what to do will end up reporting to the CMO within a year or two.”

But it’s not. And it shouldn’t slow […]
