My Evening with Nintendo TVii

Thursday nights are a common TV time for me. I’ll usually catch the NBC comedy lineup, bounce over to CBS for The Big Bang Theory, and wrap things up with Brian Williams and a segment or two of the Rock Center newsmagazine. Tonight, I followed my usual routine – but with the Wii U GamePad in my hands.

Nintendo TVii debuted today. It was an application originally promised for Wii U’s launch, but ended up being pushed back about a month. Perhaps because it wasn’t quite ready for primetime.

And it still seems like it may not be. Nintendo TVii is interesting, but it’s also currently incomplete, clunky and more of a hassle than its few benefits seem to be worth.

Nintendo TVii doesn’t require a download from the eShop – it’s already there on your Wii U Menu. It has been since you got your system and installed the laborious Day 1 update, of course, it’s just been non-functional. Now, it functions. Instead of a message telling you to come back in December, you instead are taken to the first of several set-up screens, asking you to input your zip code.

Bryan Singer's Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone could be returning to TV again. EW reports that CBS Productions is in the very early stages of development on a new version of the classic anthology series, with Bryan Singer (X-Men) executive producing. There is no writer attached yet, or a network – CBS Productions is the studio side of the company, so the project wouldn’t necessarily be for the CBS network.

The original Twilight Zone ran on CBS from 1959-1964 and there have been two previous revivals, one running on CBS from 1985-1989 and the most recent on UPN, which only ran for a single season from 2002-2003.

What isn’t clear yet is how, if at all, this impact development of the new Twilight Zone movie Leonardo DiCaprio is producing at Warner Bros.

Texas gun store owner says he'll give discount to teachers in wake of Newtown massacre

A Texas gun store owner says he will sell teachers guns at a discounted rate in light of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

CBSDFW.com reports Crocket Keller, who owns Kellers Riverside Gun Store in the Austin area, says he will give teachers who want to buy a gun a similar discount to the one he gives veterans.

“We need to start thinking out of the box and deal with this violent culture,” Keller told the station. “We need to lobby our various state governments to allow teachers to be armed.”

The massacre, which left 20 children and six adults dead at the school, also spurred talk of the possible arming of teachers in the state’s legislature.

MyFoxAustin.com reports Attorney General Greg Abbott suggested Monday that state lawmakers will look into arming teachers across the state when the next legislative session begins in a few weeks.

“Bearing arms whether by teachers and guards and things like that will be all a part of more comprehensive policy issues for the legislature to take up in the coming weeks,” Abbott said. “And you can be assured in the aftermath of what happened in Connecticut that these legislators care dearly about the lives of students at their schools and they will evaluate all possible measures that are necessary to protect those lives.”

Currently Texas law allows individual districts to decide if teachers can carry guns, but no districts in the Austin area do.

Vin Diesel Will Play Kojak

Two veteran James Bond movie screenwriters will bring the classic small screen cop Kojak to the big screen with none other than Vin Diesel in the title role of NYPD Lieutenant Detective Theo Kojak.

According to Deadline, Universal has tapped Neal Purvis & Robert Wade (Skyfall, Die Another Day) to script Kojak. Diesel will also produce the film with Samantha Vincent.

The TV series ran on CBS from 1973-78 and made Savalas, then best known for (usually bad guy) roles in films such as On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and The Dirty Dozen, into an international sex symbol.

Theft of Jesus statue leaves New York congregation heartbroken

The hearts of a New York congregation are heavy after a thief stole a statue of Jesus from their church.

The statue of the “Sacred Heart of Jesus,” made of white porcelain, sat on a pedestal outside the rectory of Saints Peter and Paul Church in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for more than a decade, CBS News reported.

Now, the 1,500-person congregation is upset after someone ripped the statue from its base in the middle of the night just days before Christmas.

“It’s a sign of the presence of God among his people. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most famous expressions of religious devotion in our Catholic world,” Rev. Manuel de Jesus Rodriguez said.

The statue is nearly 4 feet high, the station reports, and quite heavy, but surveillance footage caught a lone thief carrying it. And while the statue is meaningful, it is not worth a lot of money.

“It’s a shame. It’s one damn shame,” said Louise Gergel of the theft.

“They don’t have no heart at all because to do that is a sin,” Myrna Troche added.

According to CBS, one of the NYPD’s Hate Crimes units is investigating, but has yet to rule it an actual hate crime. There was no word on if or when the church will replace the statue.

Truck driver says deer tossed from highway overpass slammed into windshield

Police in Virginia are looking for possible suspects after a truck driver said a deer tossed from a highway overpass slammed into his windshield.

The deer had a rope tied around its neck as it was thrown off the Buffin Road overpass on I-295 early Friday near Varina, a spokesperson from MCI Express — a trucking company based in Miami – told CBS 6.

“All I know is that when I came up on the bridge it wasn’t hanging there,” the truck driver told the station. “And then I looked up and a deer came over the bridge on a rope swinging at me.”

The driver said the rope hit him in the face and he ended up with glass shards in his eyes from the broken windshield.

The rope was still tied to the bridge Saturday afternoon following a state police investigation. There are currently no suspects.
