Edison International Awards $1 Million to CSULA’s Honors College for Scholarships

ROSEMEAD, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Edison International has awarded a $1 million scholarship endowment to the Honors College at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). The first two students will be presented scholarships next week at a news conference.

Edison International Chief Executive Officer Ted Craver and CSULA President James M. Rosser will recognize students Yulan Lin, 17, of Arcadia, and Francisco Sepulveda, 18, of South Gate, at 10 a.m. on April 2, at the Golden Eagle Conference Centeron the CSULA campus. The university is located at 5151 State University Drive, Los Angeles, California 90032.

“At Edison International, we recognize that higher education is a transformative tool,” said Craver. “For people of all cultures, education changes lives. Education empowers communities and fuels the future. I am deeply honored that Edison International is able to play a small but impactful role in the success of Edison Scholars Yulan and Francisco, two bright and driven students.”

Edison International places special emphasis on awarding scholarships to underrepresented and underserved students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In 2012, the company donated $19.2 million in philanthropic support, including $10.8 million to educational programs, all from shareholder dollars.

The Edison Scholars endowment will provide a stable base and support for Honors College students in perpetuity. Edison International‘s leadership gift has already helped raise an additional $1 million in gifts and pledges for the Honors College at CSULA, one of the most ethnically diverse and comprehensive universities in the country.

“With this generous gift, Edison International has again raised the bar for all of us who stand committed to improving education now and in the near future, as the country continues to address 21st century challenges,” said Rosser. “Through Edison’s support, gifted CSULA Honors College students, like our first Edison Scholars Yulan and Francisco, will have the opportunity to become better leaders within their chosen STEM fields. These segments of the workforce are not only on the frontline of the strengthening economy, but also enable other industries to function at the high technological level today’s workforce demands.”

Lin, who began college at 13, is a chemistry major in her fourth year at CSULA. Sepulveda, the first to attend college in his family, is a freshman biology major. Both students belong to CSULA‘s Honors College, a competitive interdisciplinary program for students who expect to pursue advanced degrees. New College Guarantee: Graduate in 4 Years or the Extra Tuition Is Free

Now that the average college freshman takes more than five and a half years to graduate, a growing number of colleges are trying to entice students with guarantees that they will finish in four years — or the extra tuition will be free.

But most of these four-year guarantees come with fine print that can disqualify many applicants, such as requiring students who sign up for the program freshman year to declare and stick to a major all four years, take inconvenient classes or forgo study abroad. In addition, even the most generous of the guarantees only offer to cover tuition after the fourth year — students still have to pay for dorm and living costs.

To qualify for a guarantee program, students are typically required to complete at least 30 credits each academic year, meet regularly with advisors, and take required courses.

In return, the colleges typically promise to help students finish in four years by eliminating roadblocks to graduation, such as reducing overcrowding, lowering the number of credits required to graduate, and creating standard four-year plans that can easily be followed. If school-caused delays prevent a student who signs up for a guarantee from finishing in four years, the college promises to pay for any extra courses they need.

Last year, for example, the University at Buffalo launched its “Finish in 4” free-tuition guarantee, and added 30,000 extra seats in bottleneck courses to help ensure students could meet their requirements.

The moves attracted hundreds of new applicants, says vice provost Scott Weber. “We had one of our largest freshmen enrollments this fall,” he said.

But some colleges offering these guarantees aren’t making the reforms needed to help students finish on time.

“I would be shocked if [these guarantees were] anything more than a marketing strategy” at schools where a majority of the students take longer than four years to graduate, said Tom Sugar, vice president of Complete College America, a nonprofit that works with states to raise graduation rates.

Some colleges are setting requirements so high that they are discouraging or disqualifying students from taking advantage of the guarantees.

At the California State University, San Bernardino, where only 13% of freshmen finish in four years, priority enrollment and free tuition after four years is only given to students who have committed to a major and the guarantee program before the start of their freshman year.

Officials at the University of Maine at Farmington blamed a low signup rate for its four-year guarantee (only 75 of the school’s approximately 480 freshmen signed on last fall) on a contract that was “two-page, dense, and filled with legalese” says associate provost Robert Lively.

Last fall, the school drafted a shorter and simpler contract that it is now promoting to applicants.

Profiles of 4 believed killed by ex-LA policeman

Fugitive ex-Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner was charged Monday with killing a Riverside police officer. He also is suspected of killing an Irvine couple after declaring a revenge war on law enforcement in an alleged online rant. Here’s a look at the victims:

MONICA QUAN

Monica Quan, 28, and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, 27, were found shot in his car in the parking structure of their Irvine condominium complex on Feb. 3.

Quan was in her second year as assistant women’s basketball coach at California State University, Fullerton — the culmination of her love for the game that began when she was a child.

A standout high school basketball player, Quan once dreamed of playing professionally for the Los Angeles Sparks. She had a reputation for being fiery and intense.

Quan met Lawrence while both were playing basketball at Concordia University in Irvine.

After several coaching jobs, she joined Fullerton, where she was known as “Coach Mo.”

“I loved her work ethic. I loved her passion for life,” head coach Marcia Foster said.

Quan’s father, Randal, was the first Chinese-American captain in the Los Angeles Police Department. Later, as an attorney, he represented Dorner in the officer’s failed appeal of his dismissal to a department Board of Rights.

Dorner allegedly posted an online rant naming Quan and others that says: “I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own, I’m terminating yours.”

KEITH LAWRENCE

Keith Lawrence loved basketball so much that he would drive miles for a pickup game. But his professional goal was to be a cop.

In August, he was hired as an armed public safety officer at the University of Southern California, where he was praised for his professionalism. Before taking the job, he attended the Ventura County Sheriff’s Academy and trained with Oxnard police.

He grew up playing basketball. As a player in high school and at Concordia University, he was known for his calm, no-drama attitude, even after scoring a half-court …read more
