New DayZ Devblog: Rocket Explores With Users

Like the unstoppable onslaught of an undead force, details keep coming for the upcoming DayZ standalone. In the latest devblog game creator Dean “Rocket” Hall takes some members of the community into a very, very early build of the zombie survival game DayZ. While there isn’t necessarily all that much to do yet, we do get a chance to see the improved internal environments and the new animations for actions like vaulting.

Also shown in the devblog are the improved pathfinding. It nerds out a bit more in the tech than most people will likely find interesting, but its great to see the team at Bohemia Interactive getting the community so actively involved as the standalone version progresses.

DayZ Dev Blog Showcases Mocap

DayZ has helped sell a ton of copies of ArmA II. This has resulted in the development of a standalone version of the zombie survival game by Bohemia Interactive and DayZ creator Dean “Rocket” Hall, and throughout its development both the studio and Hall have been very open about the development process. Previous blog entries for DayZ have detailed the way the studio is redoing the environments and insides of buildings, and the newest shows how the studio plans on improving the mod’s often-criticized animations.

Instead of simply speeding up the pre-made animations like it is in the mod, the standalone version of DayZ will feature new animations, some of which are captured by Dean Hall himself. See how the process works in the video above, complete with several takes that show Hall is far from taking himself too seriously. Living the dream? Yeah, he sure is.

First Footage of the DayZ Standalone

Development continues on Bohemia Interactive‘s standalone version of DayZ. The creator of the original mod, Dean “Rocket” Hall, continues to provide regular updates on the game’s progress via the official blog. Yesterday marked a change in the updates, though, with the release of the first footage of DayZ.

The footage doesn’t show typical DayZ gameplay, and is not indicative of how the final product will look or perform, but does highlight a few updated features. These include an updated UI, new clothing effects, new item spawning to make it feel like you’re actually scavenging, and improved indoor spaces.

Hall notes that, “development is continuing to progress in extremely positive ways,” but that, “we haven’t moved to our closed external testing just yet.” He also confirmed that they don’t have a timetable for when this will happen, but did state that Bohemia Interactive is, “confident it won’t be too long before you’ll be able to join in the development yourself.” The team is currently focusing on their inventory and crafting systems, as well as server architecture.

Arma Tactics coming to Project Shield

There’s no denying that turn-based games are fun; XCOM: Enemy Unknown was one of the most exciting, terrifying and exhilarating games I played last year. Now the guys at Bohemia Interactive, creators of Arma II (which spawned the popular mod DayZ) are looking to give that experience to you on the go with Arma Tactics.

We heard a lot about Nvidia’s handheld gaming system, Project Shield, during CES 2013 but the announcement lacked any information about possible launch titles. Arma Tactics is one of the games used to show off the hardware, and now we know the game is targeted to release later in the year (during Bohemia’s second financial quarter of 2013), possibly an effort to help Project Shield attract hardcore PC gamers (though we don’t know for sure when Project Shield itself will debut.)

The player will control a four-member Special Forces team through story-driven missions or ones with randomized objectives. Bohemia Interactive boasts that there are no set paths, strategies or rails that you must move on; all decisions will be up to the player on the best way to succeed. The game can be controlled with Project Shield‘s console-like controller or the touchscreen, and it will offer unlockable weapons and campaigns, character leveling and achievements for a little extra replayability.

Different perspective and some dynamic lighting.

Arma Tactics‘ setting looks good from the few screenshots provided. Not only is it pretty, but it looks complex enough to warrant many different play styles. Ladders and stairs look like an interesting way to change up the flow of combat, while a plethora of objects could provide cover and areas to regroup. If the developers bring the careful attention to detail and authenticity that Arma II is (in)famous for, this could be a killer launch title.

Both men aged 28 and 33 years, who work for a video game-producing company Bohemia Interactive faced up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.

Bail was set at €5000, with the families currently raising the money. We have an unconfirmed report that both families have the money available and are discussing transferring the money to Greece with their attorney,” said Miloš Kučera, the Czech deputy ambassador in Greece.
