Attorneys in Trayvon Martin case address media

The attorneys in the Trayvon Martin shooting say social media gives people a way to stay engaged in high profile cases that was not possible years ago.

Speaking were Benjamin Crump, the attorney for Trayvon Martin‘s parents, and George Zimmerman‘s defense attorney, Mark O’Mara. They were talking Saturday at the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Banquet in Orlando.

O’Mara says he would prefer to “do away with all media” in a criminal case, but “that’s a fantasy that is 40 years ago.” Crump says social media has given people who normally would not have a voice a way to be engaged in the case.

Zimmerman fatally shot Martin in February 2012 during a confrontation in Sanford, about 30 miles north of Orlando.

Zimmerman face a second-degree murder trial in June. Zimmerman says he acted in self-defense.

Trayvon Martin's parents settle with Fla. HOA

Trayvon Martin’s parents have settled a wrongful-death claim against the homeowners association of the Florida subdivision where their teenage son was killed.

The Orlando Sentinel (http://thesent.nl/YYnBB7 ) reports that Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, filed that paperwork in Seminole County. Crump told The Associated Press that the filing was confidential.

The newspaper reports that the settlement amount was marked out in five pages made available for public review. In the agreement, the parties specify that they will keep the amount confidential.

Martin was fatally shot by then-neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman during a confrontation in a Sanford subdivision a year ago. Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense. His trial is set for June.

A month-and-a-half delay in Zimmerman’s arrest led to nationwide protests.

Travyon Martin's parents settle wrongful death claim

Trayvon Martin’s parents have settled a wrongful death claim for an amount believed to be more than $1 million against a Florida homeowners association where their teen son was killed, Fox News confirms.

Trayvon was shot and killed by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, 2012.

Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder, but he says he fired in self defense after the 17-year-old attacked him.

In paperwork made public, both parties specified that they would keep the settlement amount confidential, The Orlando Sentinel reported.

“It is understood and agreed that the payment made herein is not to be construed as an admission of any liability by or on behalf of the releasing parties; but instead the monies being paid hereunder is consideration for avoiding litigation, the uncertainties stemming from litigation as well as to protect and secure the good name and good will of the released parties,” the settlement said.

Benjamin Crump, the Martins’ attorney, had “no comment on that subject,” he told The Orlando Sentinel.

The document released from the settlement has eliminated the specific amount of the settlement, as well as the names of the parties and people making payment.

The homeowners association president did not return the newspaper’s calls seeking comment on the amount.

Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara said the teen’s parents tried to settle through mediation and the association had offered $1 million, but they had reportedly rejected this amount, OrlandoSentinel.com reported.

A hearing in which Zimmerman will argue he was acting in self-defense is scheduled for April. The judge has said that hearing will be at least 45 days before the trial. The settlement will not affect the criminal case.

Key deposition sought in Trayvon Martin case

Defense attorneys for the former neighborhood watch leader accused of fatally shooting Trayvon Martin are seeking to obtain a deposition from a witness who says she was on the phone with the teenager before he was killed.

George Zimmerman‘s lead attorney, Mark O’Mara, will present a motion to the judge on Friday asking to question the woman known as Witness 8.

Described as a friend of the 17-year-old Martin, she originally recounted the conversation she had with him to attorney Benjamin Crump in a recorded phone interview. Crump is representing Martin’s parents.

O’Mara also wants a deposition from Crump regarding that interview. Crump has previously submitted an affidavit, citing a formal deposition could jeopardize attorney-client privilege.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. Trial is set for June.
