Report: Did a US automaker blow the whistle on Hyundai, Kia fuel economy issue?

In all of the most hotly contested mainstream segments of the motoring universe, the difference of one mile per gallon averaged on a widow sticker can mean the difference between a sale and a walk-off – to say nothing of two or three mpg. So, when Hyundai and Kia were forced to reveal that many of their 40-mpg ratings were actually 38s and 37s, well, it made for big news.

It also, conceivably, made for a competitive disadvantage immediately, when the Korean automakers’ products were being shopped versus the guys down the block. And it’s that disadvantage that makes a recent story from Automotive News so juicy.

AN is reporting that Margo Oge, former head of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality, got a tip in 2010 that Hyundai/Kia were “cheating” to get its impressive fuel economy numbers. The tip, said Oge (who retired from the EPA this past September), came from a senior vice president from a domestic automaker. The source was credible enough for Oge to launch an audit of the Hyundai figures, which ultimately lead to the debacle that we reported on a few months ago, and that the Korean company has been trying to bounce back from ever since.

The report indicates that representatives from both Chrysler and General Motors denied tipping off the EPA, outright. Ford reaction, meanwhile, was more circumspect, saying roughly that the company does not comment on specific conversations between Ford and policymakers.

The lack of a straight denial does not realistically implicate Ford here, we’d point out. But it doesn’t do a lot to rule The Blue Oval out of the finger-pointing mystery, either. We’ll probably never know the real answer to the “who tattled?” question, but we’ll put it do you, anyway. Report: Ford to counter GM's new trucks by offering peek at 2015 F-150 in Detroit?

With the Ram 1500, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra all getting major upgrades recently, there has also been plenty of speculation how Ford will respond as it looks to maintain its title as America’s best-selling truck. Last week, Automotive News reported that Ford is looking to make a significant fuel economy gain with its 2015 F-150, and now Reuters is saying that the automaker will be offering some sort of peek at the new truck at next month’s Detroit Auto Show.

The report seems to indicate that Ford might have a concept vehicle on display at the show, but when Autoblog reached out to the Blue Oval for comment, Mike Levine, Ford’s truck communications manager, told us “we’re highlighting our all-new global lineup of commercial vehicles at NAIAS, including the Transit and Transit Connect vans. We have no other news to announce at this time.”

Thus, Ford could be showing absolutely nothing related to its F-Series future, or it might clandestinely slip something onto its display – a rendering, perhaps, a cutaway vehicle, a technology display, a concept, or perhaps a full-blown production vehicle, although the latter strikes us as highly unlikely given how far away the new production model actually figures to be.

All reports do seem to point to the fact that the next F-150, which could debut in late 2014 for the 2015 model year, will feature extensive use of aluminum body panels to help shave more than 700 pounds from its curb weight in order to help improve fuel economy by as much as 20 percent.

Report: How Carfax has cornered the market on car history reports

Ever wonder why Carfax seems to be the only company you ever hear about that offers vehicle history reports?

According to an Automotive News report, Carfax has created undeniable brand cachet, and it has also arranged some deals that make it difficult for the competition to gain footing. Marketing agreements, inked with sites like AutoTrader.com and Cars.com, mean that dealers who would like to advertise on these sites are forced to use Carfax instead of less expensive competitors. AutoCheck, from Experian Automotive Inc, provides a similar service, and Cars.com allows for the use of AutoCheck, causing a battle between it and Carfax. At the moment, Carfax has roughly 32,000 dealers, compared to AutoCheck’s 12,000.

Those dealers using Carfax are paying much more than those using AutoCheck. Pressure from clever ad campaigns and slogans like “Show me the Carfax,” lead customers to think that Carfax offers the only legitimate vehicle history report available. That said, other dealers contend that Carfax has far more comprehensive reports, and favorable in-dealership support.

According to Automotive News, there are ten vehicle history report providers, including Carfax and AutoCheck, but in a market where the only competition is a near-unknown, Carfax can afford to do business like it is the only show in town.

The Continental: Mercedes’ Longtime Motorsports Manager Departs, News on AMG, Aston, Tesla, and Škoda

Norbert Haug

Norbert Haug is out at Daimler. The head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport is leaving the company at the end of this year. A statement sent out by Daimler Financial quotes Haug admitting that “unfortunately, with one victory in 2012 since founding our own Formula 1 works team in 2010, we couldn’t fulfill our own expectations.” His sudden departure concludes a 22-year tenure that has seen many high and low points. Haug is a former writer for the car magazine Auto Motor und Sport, and was responsible for Michael Schumacher’s return to the circuit. The bold move hasn’t paid off well. Haug’s often-abrasive manner and earthy sense of humor has made him plenty of internal enemies, who were actively looking for a misstep. Former Formula 1 driver and airline owner Niki Lauda is calling the shots now at Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. The vocal Austrian was supposed to work in tandem with Haug.

Aston Martin

A Chaperone for Dr. Bez

After the acquisition of 37.5 percent of sports-car-maker Aston Martin by the Italian investment group Investindustrial, reports surfaced about a possible connection with AMG. The Italian investment group had owned a controlling share in motorcycle maker Ducati before it was sold off to Audi, at which moment the partnership between AMG and Ducati ended. That partnership was largely about marketing, and not about technology sharing.

Nevertheless, in the bidding war for Aston Martin, Investindustrial made much ado about its relationship with AMG. Indeed, my sources tell me that the Italians were in touch with AMG before the Aston Martin acquisition and had spoken with Affalterbach in rather general terms about a possible technology transfer. This tidbit eagerly was picked up by members of the press who began reporting that the deal would lead to an influx of AMG technology into future Aston models.

Of course, there is a connection: AMG parent company Daimler and Aston Martin have talked before. The unfortunate 2009 Lagonda SUV concept used a Mercedes-Benz GL-class platform; Daimler also spoke with Aston Martin about possible moves to save Maybach, which ultimately were discarded. All of those talks took place without external chaperones, so the notion that Ulrich Bez and Ola Källenius would need an Italian investor to facilitate talks about technology sharing of any kind strikes me as somewhat disingenuous.

That said, the Aston investor’s grandiloquence likely won’t keep AMG and Aston from cooperating: “We know the nature of these bidding wars,” a slightly amused Daimler source tells me. Both companies are exploring options. They include technology sharing, but, presently, they do not include Daimler purchasing a share in the British carmaker.

Not a Truck Guy, Either

I just watched the Dan Akerson interview with Automotive News, where, one year after boastfully admitting to the regrettable fact that he is no car guy, the GM CEO gets animated over Volt owners’ enthusiasm for their plug-in hybrids. That said, Akerson doesn’t seem to be a truck guy, either, judging from the look of the 2014 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups created under his watchful eyes. We all like to write about celebrity designers, but the praise for these boxy things surely needs to go to an anonymous committee. Or perhaps to Akerson himself?

There was a time when automakers in Europe did not have to put their cars through elaborate cycles in order to determine highway fuel economy. It was measured at a steady 56 mph and a steady 75 mph, and it made for amazing figures. Only those numbers didn’t make you feel like a very good driver; it simply was impossible to ever reach consumption figures even remotely approaching the official numbers in everyday driving. Fast forward to electrics like the Tesla Model S—the claimed range of 160, 230, or 300 miles is “based on driving a constant 55 mph in ideal conditions,” according to Tesla. Oh, I see. I’d like to see an established carmaker plastering brochures, dealerships, and the internet with 55 mph consumption (or “range”) figures and misleading customers into believing they are attainable. More details are explained in a lengthy blog post on Tesla’s website, but still such evaluation doesn’t really give an indication of real-life driving range.

In recent official press pictures of the Model S, I was a bit surprised to see a misaligned left taillight. Not that it matters much, but expectations could not have been higher after Tesla boss Elon Musk went on the record on green.autoblog.com, ripping on Audi and BMW with observational gems like this one: “Go and look at the bright molding on a BMW or something and you’re like, ‘that sucks.’”

Musk and his chief designer Franz von Holzhausen could learn a few lessons from the Volkswagen Group, which is about to launch another very cleanly designed hatchback under the Škoda brand. The third-generation Octavia, styled under Jozef Kaban, has grown slightly; its original position in the marketplace now is occupied by the slightly smaller, low-cost Rapid. A powerful Octavia RS version will be launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer. Meanwhile, the diesel-powered Octavia 1.6 TDI gets over 69 mpg in the European cycle—and that test involves more than holding a constant 55 mph.

Report: Ford F-150 to counter new GM pickups with 3-mpg improvement

A new battle is brewing among fullsize pickup trucks. On top of boasting horsepower or towing capacity figures, it seems the next generation of pickup trucks will also be getting pretty serious about fuel economy. With General Motors and Ram recently unveiling their latest pickups, Automotive News is reporting that Ford is working on the next-generation F-150, which is expected to include a lighter curb weight and higher fuel economy.

Reports of Ford cutting weight and using aluminum to do so on the next F-150 aren’t new, but the AN article is finally putting a possible target fuel economy to go along with the expected 700- to 750-pound weight reduction. Currently, the F-150 with EcoBoost delivers the best highway mileage of up to 23 miles per gallon, which is off the pace of the 2013 Ram 1500 that stands as the fuel economy leader (for now) with up to 25 mpg on the highway. But Ford may be looking at a three-mpg gain on its new truck; official EPA ratings for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra have not been released yet.

The article also mentions small-displacement (2.9 liters) engines and a shared Toyota hybrid technology, but it isn’t clear if either would be used in the 2016 F-150. Until then, AN says that Ford is planning to bring an eight-speed automatic to its fullsize truck within the next couple of year.

Report: Volkswagen Routan production halted, could lead to vehicle's demise

The Volkswagen Routan has quietly been out of production since July, but with a new three-row crossover on the way and a recent back-and-forth spat between Volkswagen executives and Sergio Marchionne of Fiat, it’s probable that the 2012 model year could be the last for this minivan. The current agreement for Chrysler to build the Routan in Windsor, Ontario lasts through 2014, but Automotive News is reporting that VW might be looking to renegotiate the deal early next year.

Aside from any of the political issues going on between the two automakers, the truth of the matter is that the Routan just isn’t selling well. So far this year, VW has sold just 9,923 units of the badge-engineered minivan, down 17 percent from last year. Almost all of the other entrants in the segment have enjoyed double-digit sales increases this year including the Chrysler trio of vans (Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town and Country and Ram C/V), Honda Odyssey and Nissan Quest. Overall, the Grand Caravan remains the top-selling minivan through November with 127,308 units sold, and Chrysler as a whole continues to dominate the segment it created with total minivan sales of 236,195 across its Dodge, Chrysler and Ram brands.

To make matters even worse for the Routan, the minivan market is about to add another (admittedly left-field) competitor into the mix when Ford returns to the segment with the long-wheelbase 2014 Transit Connect.

Report: End of the road for French flagship sedans as Citroën C6 production winding down

Even if their avant-garde styling has historically meant that they would never enjoy the sales success of their more staid German counterparts, it was always somehow comforting to know that the French were building large sedans. With a history of nontraditional looks and peerless ride quality (a legacy built on the hydropneumatic suspension of the original Citroën DS), big French cars have always been an acquired taste.

And now it appears buyers with that specific palette won’t have a clear place to go, at least for a while. According to Automotive News, production of the Citroën C6 shown above (click to enlarge) is scheduled to cease this month, leaving French buyers (and Francophiles) without a true-bleu option. As the article points out, Renault will still offer its Latitude – effectively a badge-engineered rework of the Korean-built Samsung SM5 – but patriotic consumers have apparently been staying away because it isn’t French enough (Renault has sold under 3,800 examples this year).

Renault may yet provide an answer for its displaced countrymen in the form of a new Initiale Paris-branded flagship offering that would be developed on Mercedes-Benz E-Class britches, but it has not yet decided whether it will move forward with the car. The alternative, to follow Citroën and Peugeot in leaving the segment, is probably looking quite appealing now, especially with Europe‘s continued economic malaise.

Citroën, for its part, is still experimenting with large cars, as evidenced by its stunning Numero Nine concept revealed at this year’s Beijing Motor Show. Whether the marque that kicked off the genre with “The Goddess” plans to revisit the large sedan remains to be seen, but it could be a good strategy if it wants to increase its presence in large-sedan-happy China.

Chevrolet Malibu to Get Early Mid-Cycle Makeover


Dan Akerson, CEO of General Motors, recently revealed that engineers already were hard at work on a makeover for the Chevrolet Malibu. In an interview with Automotive News, Akerson stated that the Malibu would receive a “mid-cycle enhancement, not dramatic, by this time next year,” adding that the changes would include the front fascia. Launched just more than 18 months ago, the Malibu’s face lift will arrive somewhat ahead of schedule; most models in the segment go three years or more between makeovers. Akerson also acknowledged the unflattering reviews and said that the refresh is taking place sooner than Chevrolet had been planned. Chevy confirmed both statements to Car and Driver this morning.
Once considered somewhat unusual, early life-cycle vehicle makeovers are now becoming more common. The most recent high-profile example being the 2012 Honda Civic, which debuted in the spring of 2011 to a collective “meh,” from its well-established fan base and critics. Honda wasted no time retreating to the design studio to hone the vehicle, and came back with an impressive effort for 2013.

We found the Malibu to be competent but less than inspiring, missing several of the key details that turn a transportation appliance into a class leader. To his credit, Akerson has a pretty realistic view of the situation: “I think it’s a good car. It’ll do OK. It is a tough segment and it’s one we need to be successful in. We’ll see how it plays out.”
