NYPD whistle-blowers testify at stop-frisk trial

Some New York City patrolmen say they’re being harassed because they’ve challenged the police department’s street stop tactics.

One officer says a rat sticker appeared on his police locker when he decided to testify at an ongoing civil rights case challenging the stops.

The NYPD has made 5 million stops in the past decade. A civil rights lawsuit contends illegal quotas are behind wrongful stops of black and Hispanic men.

The officers follow in a line of police whistle-blowers who have paid a price for testifying against their own. The most famous is Frank Serpico, whose story is etched in popular culture by the hit movie starring Al Pacino.

In an interview, Serpico says he tries to give comfort to the current crop of officers who have reported wrongdoing.

Next Round of Cinemark’s Classic Series Films to Feature ‘RAGING BULL’ and ‘THE GRADUATE’

PLANO, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (NYS: CNK) , one of the world’s largest motion picture exhibitors, is pleased to announce the final film in the Best Picture Classic Series. The 1972 Academy Award Winner for Best Motion Picture, THE GODFATHER, will play in over 120 Cinemark theatres across the country, including on the Cinemark XD – Extreme Digital Cinema screens where available. Ranked #2 on the 2007 American Film Institute’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time, the film is scheduled to play on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at two separate show times, 2pm and 7pm.

From the perspective of someone who never lived through it, there’s something romantic about the political idealism of the 1960s and ’70s. It seemed to be a time when there was great power in the voices of passionate young people, who would frequently storm the castle to have their say. The films of that time too, held real movie stars. Not just perfect-looking celebrities, but unique actors such as Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford… icons of the screen who are unlike anyone we see working today. That’s probably why many of them are still working today.

Including Robert Redford, whose ninth film as a director, The Company You Keep, pairs old school movie actors with a story about radical ’70s protestors. The film is based on a novel by Neil Gordon, and tells a fictionalized account of the members of a real anti-war movement called the Weather Underground. As old news footage tells us at the beginning of the film, members of the Weather Underground were charged with plotting to blow up government buildings and for the accidental death of a security guard in a bank robbery gone awry.

Video: Jeep's new <i>Chip Away</i> commercial has us hunting Al Pacino's back catalog

Chrysler has done a pretty good job as of late turning its television commercials into pep talks or rallying cries, but for its first ad for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it turned to Al Pacino‘s inspirational speech from the movie Any Given Sunday. In the movie, Pacino’s character talks about how football is a game of inches, but the commercial, titled Chip Away, focuses more on the attention to detail that Jeep has exhibited on its updated flagship SUV.

Centering around the newest Grand Cherokee model, the luxurious $47,995 Summit trim level, the commercial shows off some of the hand-stitched leathers and real metal and wood accents found inside the cabin. Check out the new 60-second spot by scrolling below.

Al Pacino Gets Shouty in Phil Spector Trailer

The first trailer for HBO’s film about the trail of Phil Spector has been released.

The TV movie – which airs on HBO in the States on March 24 – stars Al Pacino as the legendary music producer-turned murder suspect.

The film also stars Helen Mirren as the defence attorney who represented Spector during his first trial for murder, with the story revolving around their complicated client-attorney relationship.

David Mamet both writes and directs, with Rebecca Pidgeon, Jeffrey Tambor and Chiwetel Ejiofor also starring.

Stand Up Guys Review

Featuring an all-star cast comprised of Academy Award winners Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin, Stand Up Guys is a rough-and-tumble action comedy centered on a trio of retired mobsters who reunite for one last epic night on the town.

At the start of the film, Val (Pacino) is released from prison after serving 28 years for unintentionally offing the son of a crime lord known as Claphands (Mark Margolis). Val is greeted at the front gate by his close friend and former partner in crime Doc (Walken), and the two re-team with another mob buddy, Hirsch (Arkin). Just like old times, these three musketeers gear up for a wild night of sex, brawls and gunfights. Meanwhile, the still vengeful Claphands orders Doc to terminate Val before sunup, or else.
