Noted American terrorist and left-wing radical Bill Ayers is among the signatories of a letter calling on the United Nations to probe the closing of 49 Chicago elementary schools based on claims that it is causing massive human rights violations.

The “letter of allegation” is 24 pages long and contains 17 footnotes.

The Midwest Coalition for Human Rights sent the missive to the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland this week.

The Coalition is a network of over 50 organizations united to fight “serious human rights violations occurring in the United States.”

A number of individuals and organizations sponsored the letter. In addition to Ayers, others signers of the letter include four people associated with Action Now, an Illinois community-organizing group that split off from ACORN just before it dissolved because of financial problems and scandals.

The Company You Keep Review

By Alicia Malone

From the perspective of someone who never lived through it, there’s something romantic about the political idealism of the 1960s and ’70s. It seemed to be a time when there was great power in the voices of passionate young people, who would frequently storm the castle to have their say. The films of that time too, held real movie stars. Not just perfect-looking celebrities, but unique actors such as Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Barbra Streisand, Robert Redford… icons of the screen who are unlike anyone we see working today. That’s probably why many of them are still working today.

Including Robert Redford, whose ninth film as a director, The Company You Keep, pairs old school movie actors with a story about radical ’70s protestors. The film is based on a novel by Neil Gordon, and tells a fictionalized account of the members of a real anti-war movement called the Weather Underground. As old news footage tells us at the beginning of the film, members of the Weather Underground were charged with plotting to blow up government buildings and for the accidental death of a security guard in a bank robbery gone awry.

Former Weather Underground radical jailed in 1981 killing reportedly now teaching at Columbia

A former Weather Underground radical who spent 22 years in prison for an armored-car robbery that killed two cops and a Brinks guard now reportedly holds a prestigious adjunct professorship at Columbia University’s School of Social Work.

The New York Post reports that Kathy Boudin‘s return to respectability after her 2003 parole occurs a week before the release of Robert Redford’s “The Company You Keep,” a movie loosely based on the $1.6 million heist.

Boudin, 69, acted as a getaway driver in the heist and her status as perp-turned-prof outraged the widow of one of her victims, Brinks guard and father of three Peter Paige, who was killed in New York’s Rockland County by her accomplices from the Black Liberation Army on Oct. 20, 1981.

“She doesn’t deserve a job at all,” Josephine Paige, 74, told the Post. “She doesn’t deserve anything, nothing at all. I think she should be back in an institution.”

Of the hundreds of students Boudin has taught since her hiring in 2008, just three have express concerns regarding her criminal background and only one “switched out” of a class due to that reservation, Columbia School of Social Work Associate Dean Marianne Yoshioka said.

Boudin, who teaches about issues facing convicts and relatives when a person is released from prison, did not respond to a request for comment.

John Hanchar — the nephew of another victim of the robbery, Nyack Police Officer Edward O’Grady — said that while Boudin “has a right to do whatever she wants . . . I just hope the people that she’s lecturing are smart enough to question why [she felt] like killing people is an acceptable choice to forward their goals.”

Hanchar continued: “It’s easy to forget that violence is never the answer. Nine children grew up without their dads because of her actions.”

Yoshioka, meanwhile, said Boudin has been an “excellent teacher who gets incredible evaluations” from students each year.

Facebook adds weather feature for eventgoers

Facebook is helping people know how to dress for an event, a new feature in its seemingly unending evolution that is puzzling because it offers users the chance to hop off the social networking site.

Now when you set up an event on Facebook you can let guests know whether they should wear a jacket, sunglasses or snow boots thanks to an integration with the online weather service Weather Underground, a property of The Weather Channel located at wunderground.com.

You might wonder why Facebook is doing this, since it makes big bucks by keeping users on its own site and looking at and clicking on ads. Is it merely a generous addition in the spirit of simply making its site more helpful and useful? It’s doubtful.

In reality, dropping weather info into its Events function is a product of a hackathon, TechCrunch reports. A hackathon, which is a big tradition at Facebook, involves computer programmers and others in the field collaborating on software projects.
