11-month-old dies after being locked inside car in Alabama

The mother of an 11-month-old girl who died after being locked inside of an SUV says she blames herself for her daughter’s death.

Katie Luong told AL.com Thursday that she wishes she could have traded places with her daughter, Gabriella, who was found locked inside of the family’s SUV outside a business they own in Homewood, south of Birmingham.

“If I had to die for her to live, I would have done that,” she told the newspaper.

Luong says she was supposed to drop her daughter off at a babysitter’s house Wednesday but was preoccupied with thoughts of an employee who recently committed suicide and a close family friend who had a stroke and is still hospitalized.

Luong said her daughter was asleep during the 10-mile ride to work and the babysitter called Wednesday afternoon asking if her daughter was sick. It was then that she realized what happened and found her daughter lying unconscious in the car seat.

Police have said the temperature inside the SUV was nearly 130 degrees when they arrived.

Luong says she and her husband were also planning her daughter’s birthday party for Sunday.

“She had too many things on her mind,” family friend Diana Huynh told the newspaper. “She was traumatized over her employee’s death because she’s never known anyone who has died, and there were so many people calling her yesterday about the birthday party.”

The newspaper reports Luong and her husband have been married for nearly 10 years and the couple tried for years to conceive.

“I asked God for this baby,” Luong said, “She was our gift from God.”

The family’s pastor, Rev. Allan Murphy, senior pastor at North Shelby Baptist, and said he, friends and relatives of the Luong family are praying for understanding.

“When you hear just a few details, you can judge quickly but it’s different when you know someone’s heart and hear their hurt,” he told the Birmingham News. “It was a tragic thing that happened. A human tragedy.”

Report: Honda Ridgeline to take two-year dirt nap before resurrection

By Jonathon Ramsey

2012 Honda Ridgeline Sport

Filed under:

Three years ago, Honda said there would be no new-generation Honda Ridgeline coming in 2011. In late 2011, when there was still no word on a replacement for the little truck that’s been carrying on pretty much the same since 2006, within the space of a month both Honda’s US truck planner and the CEO of American Honda said the Ridgeline would continue and that it was an integral part of the lineup.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t take a two-year timeout. A report in Ward’s Auto says that the Lincoln, AL plant that builds the Ridgeline will cease its production in September, 2014 and a new one won’t arrive until 2016. That’s a walk-back from when the plan was to have the current truck run until a week before the next-generation truck went into production. Even so, Honda still says the Ridgeline isn’t going away forever, a company spokesman telling Ward’s, “Ridgeline continues to be an important part of our lineup.”

2016 is a long way away, though, and we all know how quickly a product line put into a coma can end up suffering fatal consequences. Even though we keep talking about the Ridgeline, perhaps what Honda is actually saying is that the small pickup market is important to them, and they’re working on a way to take better advantage of it than the Ridgeline was doing. We’ll find out one way or the other in three years.

AL teams adjusting to Interleague schedule

By Anthony Castrovince Whether swinging a bat a little more frequently in batting practice, as AL pitchers will be doing this season, will be an advantage or a disadvantage remains to be seen. Maybe they’ll have a little more muscle memory on their side, or maybe they’ll just have more opportunities to get hurt.

A.M. Best Places Ratings of MONY Life Insurance Company Under Review With Negative Implications

OLDWICK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– A.M. Best Co. has placed under review with negative implications the financial strength rating (FSR) of A+ (Superior) and issuer credit rating (ICR) of “aa-” of MONY Life Insurance Company (MONY)(New York, NY).

Concurrently, A.M. Best has downgraded the FSR to A (Excellent) from A+ (Superior) and the ICR to “a+” from “aa-” of MONY Life Insurance Companyof America (MLOA)(Phoenix, AZ). The outlook for the FSR is stable, while the outlook for the ICR is negative.

The rating actions follow the announcement that Protective Life Corporation (Protective) [NYSE: PL] (Birmingham, AL) will purchase MONY from AXA S.A. (AXA) (France) [OTC: AXAHY.PK], the ultimate parent of AXA Financial, Inc. (AXA Financial). MONY consists primarily of a closed book of life insurance business; the company no longer markets new policies.

While the MLOA entity is not part of the transaction, significant portions of its business will be coinsured to Protective’s life insurance subsidiaries. Although MLOA will continue to sell AXA Financial’s variable life and indexed universal life products, A.M. Best does not expect MLOA to be a material contributor to AXA’s U.S. operations.

Protective’s business model calls for organic growth complemented by select acquisitions, and this transaction is consistent with that strategy. Protective has a long history of successfully acquiring and integrating blocks of businesses, especially seasoned life insurance policies. A.M. Best expects the under review status to be resolved shortly after the closing of the transaction and discussions with management regarding plans for the acquired entity.

The methodology used in determining these ratings is Best’s Credit Rating Methodology, which provides a comprehensive explanation of A.M. Best’s rating process and contains the different rating criteria employed in the rating process. Best’s Credit Rating Methodology can be found at www.ambest.com/ratings/methodology.

Accused Ala. terrorist to plead guilty

An accused terrorist with Alabama ties has announced he’ll plead guilty to federal charges.

Dom Soto, a lawyer for Randy Wilson, says his client will plead guilty to conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists. The man’s trial is scheduled to begin April 19 and AL.com reports (http://bit.ly/Ymt9qq ) that Soto announced the plan during a pretrial conference this week.

Federal agents arrested Wilson in December as he was boarding a plane in Atlanta with his young family headed to Morocco. Prosecutors allege Wilson planned to travel from Morocco to another African country and support fellow Muslims in waging terrorist activity. The same day, agents arrested Mohammad Abdul Rahman Abukhdair, Wilson’s ex-business partner. Both were living in Mobile at one point.

Charges against Abukhdair are still pending and his trial is set for August.
