Fire official: 2 trapped NC children likely dead

A fire official says two children trapped under dirt at a residential construction site in North Carolina are not expected to be found alive.

Denver Fire Department public information officer Dion Burleson tells The Associated Press late Sunday that the effort by emergency personnel turned from a rescue to a recovery effort, meaning officials believe the children are dead.

WBTV and WSOC report firefighters from several places, including nearby Charlotte, are on the scene in Stanley. The street is lined with emergency vehicles.

Burleson says more information will be released later Sunday.

The stations say firefighters were using shovels and climbing gear to try to get the children out. It’s unknown how old the children are.

Hundreds of vultures swarm North Carolina neighborhood

A group of North Carolina neighbors say they are on edge because hundreds of vultures have been swarming their neighborhood.

WSOC reports the birds have been scaring children and pets as they travel in packs around the neighborhood, and are so numerous they completely covered one of the homes.

“It makes me feel kind of creepy,” resident Ann McEntire told WSOC.

The station reports the birds may be hanging around North Carolina because the mild winter is dissuading them from migrating.

State agricultural agents say the vultures are likely attracted to the neighborhood because it has many dead trees, and getting rid of those could be the first step to get rid of the birds.
