Rumormill: Audi design getting big overhaul?

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Car and Driver has an update on the design shuffle in Ingolstadt that will ultimately bring more differentiation to Audi products. Last November, Audi design chief Wolfgang Egger spoke of the need to do “something new without breaking from tradition” in Audi design, but talk at the time centered on how the Crosslane Coupe Concept would influence the new looks of the brand’s Q cars. The most recent moves appear focused on passenger cars, with designers from Volkswagen Group kin like Bentley and Seat moving to Audi, and outsiders from Alfa Romeo moving in.

While Egger decreed the end of “scalable design” to CD, last November’s report said there would be more technology and “greater visual cohesion” between interior and exterior design. We still have no idea what all this means nor when we’ll see visible changes in production, but at least we know there’s something being done behind the scenes.

Audi Design Undergoing Massive Shakeup

By Jens Meiners

Sweeping changes are happening at Audi design, we’re hearing from our sources. Chief designer Wolfgang Egger is executing a number of high-level personnel changes at Audi’s Ingolstadt design studio, while hiring new designers from SEAT, Alfa Romeo, and elsewhere. Former Bentley chief designer Dirk van Braeckel now is responsible for Audi motorsport and original equipment.

Triggered by Egger, as well as R&D chief Wolfgang Dürheimer, the company’s award-winning design strategy is under review. Audi has recently come under considerable, perhaps exaggerated, criticism for the visual similarities between its different model lines. When speaking with Egger at the New York auto show, he assured Car and Driver that the time of “scalable design” is over. Check back to C/D for more information on the changes within Audi design and what they mean for the brand.

Next-Generation Audi TT to Move Upmarket, Narrow Gap to R8

By Jens Meiners

The next-generation Audi TT will be a sharper, far more angular vehicle, Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger told us at the Detroit auto show this week. The third generation of the compact coupe and roadster—along with the next-gen A4—will introduce the brand’s new design strategy, which will emphasize the differences between its cars and its Q line of crossovers and SUVs. “We understand the criticism of our cars being too similar to each other,” Egger said, but he also hinted that his brand would not undergo radical changes such as those seen at BMW a decade ago. Key elements of future Audi models will be more-angular lines and more-daring headlight styling, made possible by the advent of full LED technology.

Under its lightweight skin, the next TT will be based on the MQB modular-transversal architecture, a front- and all-wheel-drive platform equipped with four- or five-cylinder engines. The straight-five, in fact, will play a growing role in Audi’s lineup. It will be offered in several power levels across the brand’s lineup. The top-of-the-line TT RS will produce close to 400 horsepower.

As the mid-engine sports car known as the R4 has been put on hold indefinitely, there is a considerable gap between the current TT and the R8. Taking the TT upmarket will narrow the gap between the two. And the sharpened styling language offers the chance to create a new icon—a quality that has been lost with the second-generation TT, which toned down its predecessor’s unique look.
