New York rabbi pleads not guilty to charge of impersonating police officer

A rabbi from the New York City suburbs who is accused of angrily confronting motorists with a fake badge has pleaded not guilty to impersonating a police officer.

Alfredo Borodowski appeared Thursday in Mamaroneck Village Court after the charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

The judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation and adjourned the case to the September.

Borodowski is accused of pulling his car alongside a woman’s in Mamaroneck last month, flashed a badge and shouted: “Police! Pull over!”

He told police he was angry about her slow driving.

On Wednesday, Borodowski was arrested in White Plains. A driver complained the rabbi had confronted him in a rage in May, claiming to be an officer and displaying a badge.

The defense says Borodowski has bipolar disorder.

NY rabbi arrested 2nd time on impersonation charge

A suburban New York rabbi has been arrested for the second time on a charge of impersonating a police officer.

Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski was accused last month of flashing a fake badge at a fellow motorist in Mamaroneck (muh-MAHR’-uh-nek), 20 miles north of New York City. Police in White Plains on Wednesday accused him of doing the same thing there in May.

Lt. Eric Fisher says the rabbi surrendered at police headquarters. No arraignment has been scheduled.

In both cases, other drivers alleged Borodowski seemed to be in a rage because he was behind them and wanted them to speed up.

He told Mamaroneck police he hates it when people drive too slowly.

A defense lawyer says Borodowski was suffering from bipolar disorder.

State police are investigating a third incident, in Yonkers.

NY rabbi accused of impersonating a police officer

Some drivers in the suburbs north of New York City were startled when they saw a man waving his arms, honking his horn and flashing a silver badge in a frantic effort to get them to pull over in traffic.

Even more surprising was who was suspected of doing it: a respected rabbi.

Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski has been arrested in one case and is being investigated in at least two more in which authorities say the apparent reason for trying to pull people over was to rage at them for cutting him off or driving too slowly.

“That girl was driving too slow and I hate when people do this,” the 49-year-old Borodowski told investigators after he was charged with impersonating a police officer in June, when he allegedly pulled his Camry alongside a woman’s car in Mamaroneck, flashed a badge and shouted, “Police! Police! Pull over!”

The woman, whose name has not been made public, did not pull over. According to her lawyer, Richard Clifford, the rabbi “just laid on the horn and started screaming at her” as she obeyed a 20-mph limit in a school zone. “She was so freaked out with the horn honking and the screaming that she called police immediately. … I believe my client was in danger with this guy and if she had gotten out of her car it could have escalated.”

Borodowski denied to police he was trying to impersonate an officer, saying that he was telling the woman only that he would be “calling the police.”

Police confiscated the badge, which read: “Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Officer 1338.” Judie Glave, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which oversees the bridge and tunnel authority, said the badge is “totally fake.”

Borodowski’s lawyer, Andrew Rubin, acknowledged that the rabbi’s behavior has been “manic” and said he’s suffering from bipolar disorder. The lawyer said the rabbi will plead not guilty in court this week. A previous hearing was postponed because the rabbi was hospitalized.

The rabbi has been fired from a position at prestigious Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan, one of the world’s largest Jewish houses of worship. He also leads a congregation in Larchmont.

The odd saga of the rabbi has grabbed headlines in the car-centric suburbs and gained momentum after his arrest, when other drivers came forward saying that he had tried to pull them over, too.

When Peter Moses’ wife saw the story on the TV news, “She shouted, `Oh my God, the guy who stopped us did it to someone else — and he’s a rabbi!”‘ said Moses, a public relations consultant in White Plains.

Moses said that in May, a motorist tailgated him on a drive from Scarsdale to White Plains, “obviously trying to make me go faster” than the 40- mph limit. Instead, Moses slowed, and the driver passed him and then blocked his path.

“He’s shouting, `I’m a police officer, pull over’ and he’s got this little badge that he’s waving at us. I told my wife, `That’s not a police officer,”‘ Moses said.

“Then he’s out of his …read more

NY rabbi accused of trying to pull over motorists

A New York rabbi, arrested for flashing a badge and ordering a woman driver to pull over, says he was angered by her slow driving.

Now other drivers have come forward to allege that the rabbi has been doing the same thing for months. Investigations are under way in three incidents since April.

Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski of White Plains was charged with impersonating a police officer in June. The complaint says he pulled his car alongside a woman’s in Mamaroneck, displayed a silver badge and shouted, “Police! Police! Pull over!”

The rabbi has denied claiming to be an officer. Police say he told them he hates it when people drive too slowly.

His lawyer acknowledges his “manic” behavior but says he’s suffering from bipolar disorder.

Math teacher arrested on wedding day for allegedly raping 16-year-old student

A New York state high school math teacher whose wedding was slated for Friday instead spent the day at a local courthouse for allegedly raping a 16-year-old student earlier this year.

John Azabache, 31, was scheduled to exchange, “I do’s” with Amanda Rae DeLuccia, Friday, around the time he muttered those very two words to a judge inquiring whether he understood the charges against him and the terms of an order of protection mandating he steer clear from not only his now former bride-to-be and two of her relatives, but also the victim, according to The Journal News.

Donning handcuffs and a freshly pressed ensemble consisting of a blue button-down shirt and gray slacks, a clean-shaved Azabache reportedly pleaded not guilty in Ossining Town Court, where Justice Nancy Quinn Koba set bail at $50,000.

“It all just came out at the last minute,” the bride’s 92-year-old grandmother, Josephine DeLuccia told The Journal News and Lohud.com. “He always seemed like a nice guy. I don’t know what happened. You men are all alike. You stink. I hope they send him to jail forever.”

The near-centenarian addedher granddaughter told her Friday morning, “Nanny, don’t worry about me. I’m strong; I’ll survive,” and also shared she planned to hang at the movies with friends, rather than marry the alleged rapist. The Journal News reported most guests received the no-go concerning the wedding on Thursday evening.

“I’m brokenhearted for her,” the grandma cried. “She doesn’t deserve this. She’s such a beautiful, smart girl.”

Azabache hails from Port Chester, while DeLuccia, his ex-betrothed-to-be, makes her home in White Plains, both tony towns in Westchester County, just north of New York City.

Azabache, an Ossining High School educator, is reportedly accused of having sex with a 16-year-old female student twice between March 1 and July 1, although the crimes are said not to have taken place on school grounds or during school hours, but somewhere else within Ossining.

The alleged victim’s family tipped police to the incidents on Wednesday. The Ossining School District was alerted Thursday, according to Lohud.com, and Azabache was arrested Friday, or the day he was scheduled to be married.

Azabache was reassigned from teaching and barred from school grounds, pending the outcome of the legal process, said Ossining Superintendent Raymond Sanchez.

Tony Castro, Azabache’s lawyer, told the Journal News after Friday’s court proceeding: “I just want to note that what he’s being charged with does not involve any forcible compulsion. It involves an alleged incident with a minor, someone who is just under 17 years old.”

Asked about the wedding, Castro reportedly added: “I assumed it was called off. Frankly, that is nothing I discussed with him.”

Shop that sold gun to Newtown shooter's mom loses license

A Connecticut shop that sold a gun to the Newtown school shooter’s mother has lost its federal firearms license.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives revoked the license of Riverview Gun Sales in East Windsor, about 15 miles north of Hartford, in December. The agency didn’t disclose why. It was first reported Thursday by The Journal News of White Plains, N.Y.

Authorities raided the store for undisclosed reasons shortly after the December school shootings. Around the same time, a man was arrested for stealing a rifle from the shop.

Shop owner David LaGuercia has said Nancy Lanza bought a gun from him years ago, but couldn’t remember what kind.

Adam Lanza killed 20 first-graders and six adults with his mother’s rifle. He also killed his mother and himself.

The home of a gun owner, whose address was published by a New York newspaper, has been burglarized and a state lawmaker said it appears the burglars may have used the newspaper’s map to target the residence.

“Luckily the gun was locked up and no one was hurt,” Sen. Greg Ball said.

The residence in White Plains, was identified in an interactive map that identified the names and addresses individuals who have gun permits. It was published by The Journal News — a Gannett Co. newspaper.

The elderly homeowner, who legally owns weapons, was not at home at the time of the burglary.

“The police are doing a full investigation,” the unidentified man told NewsDay. Police said it appears the burglars targeted the homeowner’s gun safe.
