AeroVironment Lands $13.8 Million Army Contract

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

California-based AeroVironment continues its relentless march — or the airborne equivalent of a march — to raking in every last cent of the $65.5 million the Pentagon has awarded it to produce unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for the U.S. Army.

On Wednesday, the drone maker announced the Army has released $13.8 million in incremental funding to pay for additional RQ-11B Raven small UAVs, Mantis miniature gimbaled payloads (i.e. upgraded video cameras), and spare parts. That’s roughly 5% of the amount of revenues AeroVironment collected in all of last year.

The Raven, probably AV‘s most famous product, is a 4.5-pound UAV that can be carried in a soldier’s backpack, and launched by tossing it in the air. It then sends day and nighttime real-time video imagery back to a ground controller wirelessly for “over the hill” and “around the corner” data to permit small tactical units to conduct local reconnaissance.

Kratos Wins $11.5 Million Drone Order

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Investors in the fast-growing field of flying robots saw a new company fly onto their radar screens this morning. Following in the tracks of successful unmanned aerial vehicle producers such as Boeing and General Atomics, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions announced Wednesday that it too has UAV products to sell — and it’s just landed a contract for $11.5 million of them.

According to Kratos, an unnamed “leading National Security Solutions provider” has asked Kratos’ Unmanned Systems Solutions Division to supply “specialty product orders related to certain Unmanned Aerial System and other programs.”

Kratos goes out of its way to keep the details of this contract vague, noting that because of “the nature of the products [and] specific customer and other related considerations, no additional information regarding these product orders is being provided.”

The company did advise that the products “related” to UAVs that it produces include “unmanned aerial systems and drones, electronics, avionics, ground control, and support products and equipment.”

Shares of the company are up 0.6% on the news, closing at $4.88.

Flying test bed: New aerial platform supports development of lightweight sensors for UAVs (w/ video)

(Phys.org)—A research team at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is developing an airborne testing capability for sensors, communications devices and other airborne payloads. This aerial test bed, called the GTRI Airborne Unmanned Sensor System (GAUSS), is based on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) made by Griffon Aerospace and modified by GTRI.
