It's a Brave New World for the Drone-Makers

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

On March 26, the U.S. Navy announced plans to award four firm-fixed-price contracts to develop prototype Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike (UCLASS) drones. This is on top of a similar project, already in the works, to develop a fleet of Unmanned Combat Air Systems (UCAS).

Billions of dollars are at stake as each of Boeing , Northrop Grumman , Lockheed Martin , and General Atomics lock their targeting radars on these contracts. Who will emerge victorious? With the Pentagon set to spend $5.6 billion on drone purchases this year alone, and more in years to come, it’s a question worth asking, and a trend in weapons purchases worth watching.

Motley Fool contributor Rich Smith explains in the following video.

Boeing operates as a major player in a multi-trillion-dollar aerospace market in which the opportunities and responsibilities are absolutely massive. Kratos Wins $11.5 Million Drone Order

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Investors in the fast-growing field of flying robots saw a new company fly onto their radar screens this morning. Following in the tracks of successful unmanned aerial vehicle producers such as Boeing and General Atomics, Kratos Defense & Security Solutions announced Wednesday that it too has UAV products to sell — and it’s just landed a contract for $11.5 million of them.

According to Kratos, an unnamed “leading National Security Solutions provider” has asked Kratos’ Unmanned Systems Solutions Division to supply “specialty product orders related to certain Unmanned Aerial System and other programs.”

Kratos goes out of its way to keep the details of this contract vague, noting that because of “the nature of the products [and] specific customer and other related considerations, no additional information regarding these product orders is being provided.”

The company did advise that the products “related” to UAVs that it produces include “unmanned aerial systems and drones, electronics, avionics, ground control, and support products and equipment.”

Shares of the company are up 0.6% on the news, closing at $4.88.

Anti-Drone Activists To Protest Obama Killing Program

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Opponents of President Barack Obama‘s drone policy are planning a month of protests in April, seeking to intensify attention on the administration’s controversial targeted killing program.

Anti-drone activists will go after the military, universities and companies that play a role in Obama‘s drone program in a month dubbed “April’s Day of Action,” the Guardian reported:

The protests will begin on April 3 with a rally in New York, followed by three days of protest outside the facilities of companies that make drones, including at San Diego-based General Atomics which makes Predator and Reaper drones.
