‘Project Runway’ Premiere Features Contestant Who Has No Idea How To Sew (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

There were a lot of big changes on “Project Runway” when the show returned for its 12th season. For one, the prize package is bigger than ever — worth more than half a million dollars. To make it more challenging, the designers are now managing their own budgets for the whole season, rather than week-to-week. That means it’s possible to run out of money for a challenge down the road.

But perhaps the most unusual change was that it no longer seems to be required that a contestant know how to sew. Okay, that may have always been the case, but Sue was pretty upfront about having no idea how to operate the sewing machine in front of her. She asked her competitors for help, who were stunned that she didn’t know how to use a basic machine.

“That’s really ballsy to sew something on a machine and not know how to use it at all,” said fellow contestant, Dom. Sue learned enough to get by and got her design together. But Hollywood Life doesn’t have a lot of hope for her when they saw that she seemed perplexed at the sight of a sewing machine.

"It's Fashiontainment!" Zac Posen and Heidi Klum Spill Project Runway Secrets

By Kate Schweitzer

In the near decade that Project Runway has been filming at Parsons, the production team has kept a closed set. Until now. For this season, we got to go behind the scenes as they filmed a very special episode (more to come on that later!), we took an all-access tour (including the newly decorated workroom, designer’s lounge, and well-stocked Belk accessories wall – check out our pics on Instagram!), and we got beauty tips from the hair and makeup team.

Although we can’t share it all with you just yet (darn spoilers!), we did sit down with some of our favorite judges to get all the scoop on the new season in advance of its premiere on Lifetime tonight. After one wild runway show, the producers turned off the cameras so we could grill Heidi Klum and not-so-new judge Zac Posen on all things Project Runway. …read more

‘Project Runway’: Layana Can’t Believe Daniel Wants To Take Credit For His Own Work (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Avant garde was the order of the week on “Project Runway,” but it appears delusional breakdowns was also on the menu. Especially for contestant Layana. She lost it completely when her teammate Daniel claimed that his was the better look, which it was. But that wasn’t even the real problem with what he said, according to Layana.

“It’s our garment! The ready-to-wear is not Daniel-only, it’s you and I,” she said. Except that they had divided the designs, and he had made that one entirely by himself.

He tried to explain it to her. “Well you took the avant-garde–” he started, but she cut him off, insisting that the avant-garde was hers. “So you have both of them?” Now he was confused what she was getting at.

‘Project Runway’: Miranda Lambert Is Guest Judge, Offers Harsh Critiques (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The challenge for this week of “Project Runway” was to design a dress for country music star Miranda Lambert. To add to the pressure, Miranda was there herself to help judge the designs and offer her own critiques. And she proved that she had no intention of being one of those gushing celebrities who says everything is great. She didn’t hold back at all.

She was particularly disappointed in Matt, who saw himself land in the bottom thanks to his design. He couldn’t stop apologizing for it, either, which seemed to bother Miranda more than the design itself.

“You know what? I don’t even want to talk about it, because you obviously know what’s wrong with it,” she said. “I just want to talk about you not having confidence in your own craft. Because, if you don’t have confidence in your craft, then no one else can.”

Sennheiser bets on black for its latest headphones

LAS VEGAS—I may not be a devotee of Project Runway, but audio company Sennheiser assures me that black is currently dominating the latest collections from the leading fashion houses. It’s in that spirit that the company just released the Momentum Black, a follow-up design to its relatively new, lifestyle-focused headphones.

Brother’s DreamWeaver sews the clothes for you (video)

LAS VEGAS—A $10,000 sewing machine is not for the faint of wallet, but Brother International’s new DreamWeaver XE is perfect for budding fashion designers.

We watched the DreamWeaver in action at the International CES this week. It lets sewing enthusiasts use embroidery software to upload patterns they’ve designed (or choose pre-loaded patterns). Just install a spool of thread and let the machine do all the work. A $15,000 model that lets you set 10 spools of various thread colors is also available.

You might recognize Brother’s machines from their prominent placement in the popular fashion design show Project Runway. One of the show’s past contestants, Anthony Ryan Auld, was a celebrity guest at Brother’s booth during the show.

And if $10,000 sounds too steep for a sewing machine, well, consider your dreams of Project Runway fame a lost cause.
