Studio Asks NECA to Discontinue Django Toys

Hang on to those Django Unchained action figures you purchased online — they’re going to be very valuable soon.

According to a report from the L.A. Times, The Weinstein Company has asked the toymaker NECA to discontinue their Django dolls after receiving complaints that the dolls were offensive and trivialized the horrors of slavery.

Since the toys were announced, the advocacy group Project Islamic Hope called them a “slap in the face of our ancestors,” while the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network called for a national boycott of the figurines.

Django Unchained Toys Elicit Outrage

Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained has already been publicly criticized for its violence and alleged racism, but now the film’s merchandise has sparked even more controversy.

Earlier this year, NECA partnered with the Weinstein Company to make a series of retro eight-inch figurines depicting characters from the movie, including the likenesses of Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington and others.

These figures are currently being sold on Amazon, but Najee Ali, director of the advocacy group Project Islamic Hope, wants to change that. In a recent interview, he told AP that the collectibles are a “slap in the face of our ancestors” and wants them removed from the online market.

Slavery-era action figures for ‘Django Unchained’ called insensitive

Slavery-era action figures tied to Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” are raising questions about whether they’re appropriate.

A line of figures of the movie’s main characters are on sale online, manufactured by toy maker NECA in partnership with the Weinstein Co.

Najee Ali, director of the advocacy group Project Islamic Hope, plans a news conference Tuesday with other Los Angeles black community leaders calling for the removal of the toys from the market….
