Schindler Introduces World’s Most Advanced Elevator that can be Powered Exclusively by Sunlight

News facts:

  • The Schindler Solar Elevator commercially available in Europe, India in 2013; in the U.S. and other global markets in 2014.
  • Supplies from up to 100 percent of elevator power needs in residential and low-rise commercial applications.
  • Reduces energy costs while ensuring operations during power interruptions.

MORRISTOWN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Schindler introduced the world’s most advanced affordable, solar-powered elevator system today, a trailblazing technology that underscores the company’s dedication to developing innovative, sustainable solutions for urban mobility challenges.

Inspired in large part by its partnership with the revolutionary Solar Impulse project, the zero fuel airplane aiming to fly around the world propelled only by solar energy, the Schindler Solar Elevator is a hybrid system designed to supply from up to 100 percent of the elevator’s power needs from rooftop solar panels and a proprietary Hybrid Energy Manager (HEM) that stores the solar energy in batteries until needed.

“First customer installation testing in Barcelona, Spain, proved the efficiency of the new system,” said Eric Rossignol, R&D system project manager at Schindler. “The Schindler Solar Elevator not only reduces energy costs and avoids the costly power-peaks caused when elevators begin each trip, but it can run independently of the power grid so it can continue operating during power interruptions or blackouts.”

Design Simplicity

Solar panels can supply most of the Schindler Solar Elevator‘s power requirements, which will vary depending on size and daily traffic. Backup power needs are provided by a one-phase grid connection, which is significantly simpler and less costly to install and operate than the standard three-phase connection. The Schindler Hybrid Energy Manager collects and stores the clean energy generated from the solar panels and the elevator operations to provide backup energy supply should a power interruption occur.

The new solar elevator system uses a standard Schindler 3300 gearless machine room-less elevator, which is already up to 60 percent more energy efficient than hydraulic elevators. The elevator system includes many features that are designed to save energy and reduce costs: stable start; a frequency converter with an energy efficient standby power mode; controls that automatically switch car lights to standby mode and LED car lights. Atlantic Accountable Care Organization and Cigna Start Accountable Care Program to Improve Health and Lower Costs

  • Consumers benefit from improved care coordination and greater emphasis on preventive care
  • Primary care doctors are rewarded for improving patient health and lowering medical costs
  • Program includes registered nurse care coordinators aligned with Cigna case managers

MORRISTOWN, N.J. & BLOOMFIELD, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Cigna (NYS: CI) and Atlantic Accountable Care Organization, have launched a collaborative accountable care initiative to improve patient access to health care, enhance care coordination and achieve the “triple aim” of improved health, affordability and patient experience. The program is effective April 1.

Collaborative accountable care is Cigna’s approach to accomplishing the same population health goals as accountable care organizations, or ACOs. The program will benefit more than 15,000 individuals covered by a Cigna health plan who receive care from Atlantic ACO‘s 1,300 physicians.

“Every day our doctors and clinical team focus on providing well-coordinated care that helps our patients live healthier, more productive lives,” said David Shulkin, M.D., administrator, Atlantic ACO, president, Morristown Medical Center, and vice president, Atlantic Health System. “Our commitment to quality care that delivers superior results for our patients aligns with Cigna’s commitment to changing the focus of health care from volume of care to quality and value of care.”

“We’re aiming to fundamentally change the health care delivery system by rewarding physicians for results,” said Ronald Menzin, M.D., Cigna’s senior medical director for New Jersey. “A patient-centered system that’s focused on prevention and wellness, combined with the right incentives for physicians, will ultimately result in a healthier population and lower medical costs. That’s good for individuals, families, employers and doctors.”

Under the program, Atlantic ACO monitors and coordinates all aspects of an individual’s medical care. Patients continue to go to their current physician and automatically receive the benefits of the program. Individuals who are enrolled in a Cigna health plan and later choose to seek care from a doctor in the medical group will also have access to the benefits of the program. There are no changes in any plan requirements regarding referrals to specialists. Patients most likely to see the immediate benefits of the program are those who need help managing chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease.
