Drew Peterson enters prison for murder sentence

Less than 24 hours after screaming out his innocence in court, Drew Peterson has been transferred from jail to an Illinois state prison to begin serving a 38-year term for murder.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the former suburban Chicago police officer was handed over for transfer to the Stateville prison outside Joliet on Friday at around 9:30 a.m. Peterson will get four years credit for time already served in jail.

A judge sentenced him Thursday for the 2004 drowning death of his fourth wife, Kathleen Savio. He’s a suspect in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Just after sitting at a microphone to address the judge at his sentencing, Peterson exploded in anger. He looked at Savio’s family and shouted, “I did not kill Kathleen!”

Drew Peterson screams, gets prison in wife's death

Drew Peterson showed nearly no emotion during his murder trial. Yet the once famously jocular ex-Illinois police officer screamed out his innocence before he was sentenced to 38 years in prison for his third wife’s death.

The outburst Thursday suggested reality may be settling in for Peterson, who for years casually dismissed suggestions he killed Kathleen Savio in 2004, or that he was behind the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Savio’s death was initially ruled an accident. But after Stacy Peterson disappeared, authorities took another look and reclassified Savio’s death as a homicide.

But the sentencing isn’t the end. Prosecutors say they could charge Peterson in the disappearance of his fourth wife. And defense attorneys believe the conviction could get tossed because prosecutors heavily relied on hearsay.

Drew Peterson shouts: 'I did not kill Kathleen'

Drew Peterson shocked an Illinois courtroom during his sentencing hearing in the death of his third wife, shouting “I did not kill Kathleen.”

Someone in the court audience responded by shouting back, “Yes, you did.” That person was then removed from the Joliet courtroom on Thursday afternoon.

Peterson’s outburst came as a judge was preparing to sentence him for murdering Kathleen Savio. The former Bolingbrook police officer faces between 20 and 60 years in prison.

Judge refuses to grant Drew Peterson a new murder trial

A judge has refused to grant Drew Peterson a new murder trial in the death of the former suburban Chicago police officer’s third wife.

The ruling came Thursday after Peterson’s current legal team argued for a new trial on grounds his former lead attorney botched the case.

After the ruling, Judge Edward Burmila moved on to Peterson’s sentencing hearing.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September in the 2004 death of Kathleen Savio. Her body was found in a dry bathtub.

The 59-year-old Peterson faces up to 60 years in prison for Savio’s murder.

Peterson is also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, but hasn’t been charged.

Judge to rule on Peterson retrial motion

A judge outside Chicago says he’ll rule on Drew Peterson‘s request for a new trial.

The decision Thursday in the former suburban police officer’s murder case comes after two days of testimony on the request.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004. He’s also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Peterson’s current legal team argues he should get a new trial, in part, because Peterson’s longtime lead attorney allegedly bungled last year’s trial.

If he rejects the retrial motion, Judge Edward Burmila has said he’ll immediately sentence Peterson on his murder conviction. The 59-year-old faces a maximum 60-year prison term.

If he’s sentenced, several relatives of Savio’s plan to address the court, including her brother and sister.

Drew Peterson seeking new murder trial

A hearing is set to resume that will determine if former suburban Chicago police officer Drew Peterson gets a new trial on charges he murdered his third wife.

Peterson’s lawyers are asking for a retrial on grounds that his lead attorney at the 2012 trial failed to adequately defend him.

Will County Judge Edward Burmila heard a full day of testimony Tuesday before recessing without a ruling. The hearing resumes Wednesday.

Lead state prosecutor James Glasgow told reporters Tuesday he expects a ruling Wednesday.

The judge has said he’ll proceed straight to sentencing if he rejects the defense request for a retrial.

The 59-year-old Peterson faces a maximum 60-year prison term for Kathleen Savio‘s death.

He’s also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Warring Peterson lawyers take fight to court

A lawyerly war of words between Drew Peterson‘s former lead trial attorney and current lawyers is heading to court.

Jurors in September convicted the former suburban Chicago police officer of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio. He also is a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

A judge will hear arguments Tuesday from current attorneys that Peterson deserves a new trial on grounds that lead trial attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the initial trial. Brodsky left defense team in November and denies the allegations.

A Chicago-area attorney who isn’t connected to the case says Peterson’s chances of prevailing are slim.

If the motion is rejected, the judge could proceed straight to sentencing. Peterson faces a maximum 60-year prison term.

Former Drew Peterson lawyer sues current lawyer

A public quarrel between one former and one current attorney for Drew Peterson over who is to blame for the suburban Chicago police officer’s murder conviction has escalated again.

Joel Brodsky, Peterson’s lead trial attorney who has since stepped down from the legal team, filed a 31-page defamation lawsuit this week that hurls bitter denunciations wrapped in legalese at Steve Greenberg, a co-counsel at the trial who is still representing Peterson. Peterson was convicted in September.

The burgeoning feud comes weeks before a Will County judge is set to rule on a defense motion for a new trial based on allegations of Brodsky’s inadequate representation. If the judge rejects the motion, Peterson would immediately be sentenced for killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Peterson is also suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wide, Stacy Peterson, though he has never been charged.

Brodsky’s lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Cook County Court, singles out a letter Greenberg released to the media in September accusing Brodsky of “single-handedly” losing the trial. The letter provides an unflattering account of Brodsky’s leadership at trial, saying he insisted on other lawyers calling him “coach.”

The lawsuit says Greenberg “developed animus, hatred and resentment of Brodsky which caused him to ignore the best interest of Peterson and become irrationally fixated and obsessed with destroying Brodsky.”

Greenberg developed a grudge, it says, because Brodsky told him to stop appearing on national TV shows during the trial.

The alleged defamation by Greenberg, the suit claims, held Brodsky up to “great public scorn, hatred, contempt, ridicule, humiliation, distress, anguish, anxiety, disgrace, and suffer great injury to his dignity, honor, personal and reputation …”

In his Sept. 24 letter, Greenberg hit equally hard.

“You wafted the greatest case by ignorance, obduracy and ineptitude,” Greenberg wrote. “Your effort to blame me is suggestive of a six-year-old child changing the rules of the game when he falls behind. … You are nothing more than a bully.”

The lawsuit also names the Chicago Tribune and AOL’s Patch news website, both of which closely covered the yawning rift between Brodsky and Greenberg that started just hours after the trial ended.

The Tribune didn’t have an immediate comment. AOL Patch didn’t return a message seeking …read more
