Single mom fired for selling Girl Scout cookies at work
A Washington D.C. single mother says she received no warning before she was fired from her job at American University for selling Girl Scout cookies.
Tracy Lewis tells MyFoxDC.com that on Feb. 18 she was called into her boss’ office while working as a retail service manager for Bon Appetit, which provides various food services on the university’s campus.
Lewis claims her boss told her she was being fired for selling the cookies for her 12-year-old daughter’s Girl Scout troop out of her food cart, even though Lewis says she has done so for the past three years with no reprimand.
“I had the cookies on a cart, and I would never ask anyone to buy them, ” Lewis told MyFoxDC.com.”But, if they wanted to buy some, I would sell them.”
Lewis’ manager claims in a termination letter that Lewis committed “gross misconduct by soliciting,” and “operating a personal cash business selling Girl Scout cookies over the counter which violates company policy.”
Lewis says the claims are unfounded, as she could not even make a profit off of the cookies.
“It’s a volunteer position,” Lewis said. “I was just trying to help my daughter raise money for trips and stuff like that.”
Bon Appetit said in a statement employee records are confidential.
Georgia woman reportedly steals almost $10G from Girl Scout troop
The former treasurer of a Georgia Girl Scout troop stole $9,800 from the group, police say.
According to MyFoxAtlanta.com, Darlene Jo Lewis has a daughter who was a member of the troop.
Lewis spent the money on gifts and a senior dating service, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported.
Investigators say the troop is being forced to disband as a result of the money loss.
Lewis faces felony theft by taking charges and is being held in jail.

PORTLAND, Ore., March 17 (UPI) — A $24,000 order for 6,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies turned out to be a hoax, two troops in Oregon say.

An order for 6,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies turned out to be a half-baked hoax, leaving the troops holding the boxes, KATU News reported.
Two Oregon Girl Scout troops were given an order for 6,000 boxes of the trademark cookies, an order totaling $24,000, by a company in Hillsboro.
According to KATU, a parent of one of the scouts said a co-worker approached her to set up a large corporate account. Then, the parent exchanged emails with someone claiming to be from the company.
But when it came time to pay up, that’s when the whole scheme crumbled.
The parent learned the order was a fake, leaving the troops with 6,000 boxes of unsold cookies and ruining their chances to earn enough to attend summer camp and to aid the homeless.
But as word got around about how the scouts had been burned, people decided to chip in, showing up at the Girl Scout offices in Portland to buy cookies to help the girls. As of Saturday night, 3,000 boxes from the fake sale had been sold.
“I’ve been a Girl Scout for 23 years,” Girl Scout spokeswoman Sarah Miller told KATU. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Girl Scout cookies are not for sale after March 10, but the troops got together for Saturday’s sale to try to make up some of the loss. The troops will have another sale next Saturday.
Thieves grab cash boxes from Girl Scouts' cookie booths
Two Tucson-area Girl Scout troops were crime victims as thieves grabbed and ran off with the troops’ cash boxes from cookie sales.
In one case, two women spoke with girls selling cookies outside a grocery store before one woman grabbed the cash box containing about $375. The women fled in a car that had its license plate covered.
In the second case, a man grabbed a box with about $250 from a troop’s table outside a bookstore. He ran off and hopped a nearby fence.
“They decided to steal our money box and they grabbed it and ran and got into a vehicle and drove off,” Micahela Everett, a Girl Scout troop member, told KVOA-TV.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that both thefts took place over the weekend.
“I hope they catch them. That’s ridiculous,” said Don Norton, an avid Girl Scout cookie customer.
Debbie Rich, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona, said the Girl Scouts will consider what they can do to improve security, possibly including training for different scenarios.
“They want to use their experience to help other girls understand that these kinds of situations happen, not just during the Girl Scout cookie program, but in life,” Rich said. “I don’t want this to make it the norm of Girl Scouts. I don’t want this to change our program and how girls relate to the public.”
