Judge reluctant to delay in Zimmerman case

The judge handling the case of slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin says it would take extreme circumstances for her to grant a continuance for the self-defense immunity hearing of a former neighborhood watch volunteer charged in Martin’s shooting.

Judge Debra Nelson said Thursday that she would, however, consider rolling George Zimmerman‘s immunity hearing under Florida’s “stand your ground” law into the scheduled June trial.

Defense attorney Mark O’Mara will formally get to argue for that during another hearing next week.

For now, Nelson has reserved the final two weeks of April for the immunity hearing. She had also requested an initial jury pool of 500 for June’s second-degree murder trial.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty, saying he acted in self-defense when he shot Martin.

Fla. hearing to set schedule in Zimmerman case

A judge presiding over the trial of neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman is holding a hearing to discuss scheduling and jury selection.

Zimmerman is set to go on trial in June for second-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty, claiming he acted in self-defense when he shot Trayvon Martin.

The hearing Thursday in Sanford, Fla., was requested by Zimmerman’s attorneys.

Lead attorney Mark O’Mara says in a motion he wants to discuss the process for what he expects will an “extended” jury selection.

O’Mara also wants to nail down the scheduling of Zimmerman’s “stand your ground” hearing in which the judge will decide if there is enough evidence to go to trial or if the case should be dismissed. That hearing must be held by the end of April.

George Zimmerman Is A Victim Too

George Zimmerman SC George Zimmerman Is A Victim Too

I’ve been a citizen on patrol for over 20 years. My stomping grounds are often Southern inner-cities where I grew up and currently reside.

I also walk business districts where the very poor and very well off warily pass by each other and give food to the homeless planted there.

This places me well to the right of the communist “Black Citizens Council” thug lobby lionizing the Hood’s hoods as anything but criminals.

I call them “chocolate Klansmen.”

As such, I have much more in common with George Zimmerman of the Trayvon Martin case fame than liberal Blacks ignoring our murder rate to go ape over occasional non-Black suspects.

The Hood’s molly coddled tormentors are my personal specialty. I make no secret of believing that opposing them is today’s equivalent of the 1963 March On Washington.

As a citizen on patrol and an American Black, I followed the Zimmerman case closely. This unique vantage sometimes placed me at odds with mainstream media and conservative news outlets.

Things have cooled off a bit, allowing a more dispassionate review of a case race-baiters hoped would explode into national ethnic warfare.

I know only too well the thug mindset downloaded into millions of young Black male minds- it culturally surrounds me.

Liberals prefer to privately air these concerns, but I don’t owe chocolate Klansmen the courtesy of a gag order.

Their ignorant, bullying swagger and violence is well known to Americans of all colors. Pictures and accounts surfaced that suggest the late Trayvon Martin may have been part of this ghetto branch of anti-social, communist collectivism.

Gold teeth, while not a constitutional admission of criminality, argue badly when benefit of the doubt is required.

Where I’m from, such cosmetic dentistry is a sure sign of chocolate Klansman affiliation. One is either a predator or perhaps trying to fit in with these goons.

Even worse are thug enablers in good standing of supportive “Black Citizens Councils”, which include civil rights organizations, activists, clergy, and others who should know better.

Reports Martin was suspended from school during the fatal night in question also tilt benefit of the doubt away from him in some minds.

Critics can dismiss this conjecture as purely circumstantial, especially the famed hoodie worn that fatal night.

American Black boys and men have the dubious right to gold teeth and not to have legal infractions outweigh the facts in separate matters.

We’re also free to walk at night to purchase Skittles or anything else we can afford.

We’re not free, however, to ignore how chocolate Klansman rampages place other Americans on guard against us.

This is the real world. I always advise urban boys and men not to use thug-wear, nor hang out with known criminals.

Again, they’re free to do so; but society (police and concerned citizens of all colors ) are also free to exercise added scrutiny these stupid decisions invite.

My “Make Peace With America” dialogue places blame squarely upon them, not others, for adopting chocolate Klansman mannerisms, attire, and records.

George Zimmerman, like other Americans, doubtlessly knows that chocolate Klansmen are disproportionately represented in local criminal ranks.

That’s not racism; it’s …read more

Fla. judge: No trial delay in Trayvon Martin case

A judge in the case of a former neighborhood watch leader accused of shooting Florida teenager Trayvon Martin has denied a defense request to delay the trial.

George Zimmerman‘s attorneys presented a motion Tuesday asking Judge Debra Nelson to push the trial from mid-June back to November. They say the prosecutor has been slow in turning over needed evidence. The state attorney denied the accusation.

Judge Debra Nelson noted Zimmerman’s lead attorney had been in the case nearly a year and says the problems he’s having getting evidence are not insurmountable.

Zimmerman is claiming he acted in self-defense in shooting Martin last year and has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

Prosecutor against delaying Trayvon Martin case

The prosecutor in the shooting death case of Florida teen Trayvon Martin is asking the judge to deny a defense request to delay the trial.

In a written response to the motion to postpone the trial until November, state attorney Bernie de la Rionda said that George Zimmerman‘s attorneys weren’t following the judge’s suggestions for obtaining wanted discovery documents faster.

On Wednesday, Zimmerman’s attorneys asked for more time to prepare, saying prosecutors had been slow to turn over evidence. De la Rionda responded saying the defense “wants the state to do its job.”

The former neighborhood watch volunteer is claiming he acted in self-defense in shooting Martin last year and is pleading not guilty to a second-degree murder charge.

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Wisconsin sheriff urges residents to arm themselves

A sheriff who released a radio ad urging Milwaukee-area residents to learn to handle firearms so they can defend themselves while waiting for police said Friday that law enforcement cutbacks have changed the way police can respond to crime.

In the 30-second commercial, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. says personal safety is no longer a spectator sport.

“I need you in the game,” he says.

“With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option,” he adds. “You can beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. … Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we get there.”

The ad has generated sharp criticism from other area officials and anti-violence advocates. The president of the Milwaukee Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, Roy Felber, said it sounds like a call to vigilantism.

“That doesn’t sound too smart,” Felber said. “People have the right to defend themselves, but they don’t have the right to take the law into their own hands.”

Under Wisconsin’s “castle doctrine,” someone who uses deadly force against an unlawful intruder to their home, business or vehicle is presumed to have acted reasonably. A spokeswoman for the state Department of Justice said that as of this week, there are about 155,000 concealed carry permits in Wisconsin.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Clarke said he just wants people to know what their options are. While self-defense isn’t for everyone, some people see personal safety as their own responsibility, he said, and they should be trained properly.

“I’m not telling you to `Hey, pick up a gun and blast away.’ … People need to know what they are doing if they chose that method — to defend themselves,” he said.

But he also said he wanted to call on residents to be law enforcement “partners.” He said he could either whine about budget cuts that forced him to lay off 48 deputies last year or he could get creative.

“People are responsible to play a role in their own safety, with the help of law enforcement,” Clarke said. “I’m here to do my part, but we have fewer and fewer resources. We’re not omnipresent, and we have to stop giving people that impression.”

“After sitting down and thinking about this, I’m thinking `Hey, I’ve got an untapped reserve over here, and it’s the public,”‘ Clarke said.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett‘s office released a statement criticizing the ad: “Apparently Sheriff David Clarke is auditioning for the next Dirty Harry movie.”

Barrett was beaten up several years ago by someone with a tire iron, and Clarke said he thought that would make the mayor “a lot more sensitive to people being able to defend themselves in such instances. A firearm and a plan of defense would have come in handy for him that day.”

Jeri Bonavia, executive director of Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, said Clarke took a dangerous position with his ad. She pointed to the case of George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida who fatally shot an unarmed 17-year-old following an altercation. Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense under Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

“I feel like this is such an irresponsible thing for our chief public safety officer of a county to do,” Bonavia said. “I think he owes this community an apology. And if he really believes that he’s not capable of providing for our public safety he should get a different job.”

Security firm sues Zimmerman, attorney over fees

A security company claims in a lawsuit that George Zimmerman, his wife and attorney owe more than $27,000 for protection services.

The Orlando Sentinel reports (http://thesent.nl/WBDTAJ ) that Associated Investigative Services filed the lawsuit Friday in Orange County Circuit Court. The company says it was hired in June to provide security for the Zimmerman family but promised payments stopped after an independent trustee took over Zimmerman’s defense fund.

Zimmerman attorney Mark O’Mara says the lawsuit was a surprise and that the company was paid some $40,000.

Zimmerman is awaiting trial on second-degree murder charges in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman contends the unarmed teenager attacked him and is claiming self-defense in the February killing. Zimmerman is free on $1 million bail and is in hiding.
