Work to Focus on Forest Conservation in Southeastern United States

MEMPHIS, Tenn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– International Paper, the world’s largest paper company and Dogwood Alliance, one of the Southern United States leading forest conservation organizations, announced an agreement today that will help advance science based forestry improvements in the world’s largest paper producing region. The former foes will map forests around International Paper‘s southeastern operations to identify whether any endangered forests or high conservation value areas exist. This mapping will help ensure that IP is not sourcing from any endangered forests as per its long-standing company policy and will also identify mutually-agreed upon areas where conservation can be focused. In addition, IP and Dogwood Alliance will work together to discourage the conversion of natural hardwood forests to pine plantations.

This collaboration builds on initiatives recently announced by International Paper. The first is IP‘s membership in the World Wildlife Fund’s Global Forest & Trade Network in North America. Additionally, IP announced a $7.5 million five-year project with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to restore and conserve forests in the Coastal Carolinas, Cumberland Plateau and Texas/Arkansas Piney Woods regions. Finally, IP announced an increase in its sourcing of Forest Stewardship Council certified fiber by more than 1.2 million tons during the past five years, and expects to triple that increase by the end of 2014. The company continues to support multiple certification standards as part of its public goal of increasing certified fiber.

Verso Paper Corp. Awards Verso Forest Certification Grant to PalletOne of Maine

MEMPHIS, Tenn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Verso Paper Corp. (NYS: VRS) today announced that PalletOne of Maine has been selected to receive a Verso Forest Certification Grant. The grant will enable PalletOne to seek independent Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) Chain of Custody (COC) certification for its pallet mill operation in Livermore Falls, Maine.

PalletOne already purchases a portion of its wood supply from FSC-certified forests in New England and sells residual wood chips to Verso’s paper mill in nearby Jay, Maine. Achieving COC certification will allow PalletOne to increase the amount of FSC-certified material available to Verso and ultimately to Verso’s paper customers who prefer FSC-certified products. In addition to the grant, Verso will provide technical expertise to assist in the certification process.

“Verso has a long history of promoting sustainability by supporting a variety of certification initiatives within our wood supply chain,” said Verso Fiber Supply Manager Jim Contino. “We launched the Verso Forest Certification Grant program last year to increase certified fiber available to our mills, and the PalletOne project is well suited to our criteria. Avery Dennison Announces Responsible Paper Procurement Policy

PASADENA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Avery Dennison Corporation (NYS: AVY) announced today that it has formalized a company-wide policy to promote responsible paper sourcing and procurement. The policy will be available in the Reports and Downloads section of the company’s sustainability website.

“As a leader in labeling and packaging materials and solutions, we recognize that we have a responsibility to help our customers and our industry become more sustainable,” said Dean Scarborough, Avery Dennison chairman, president and CEO. “Our policy will guide us in sourcing materials responsibly, using them more efficiently in our operations, and developing greener products from them.”

Developed with the support of non-governmental organization Rainforest Alliance, Avery Dennison‘s policy commits the company and its businesses to:

  • Identify and disclose the sources of the pulp, natural fiber and paper in its labeling and packaging materials and solutions
  • Help ensure that its suppliers follow sustainable forest management practices
  • Evaluate and reward sound environmental performance on the part of its supply chain partners
  • Seek to maximize its use of recycled content and fiber sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-certified forestry operations
  • Work to avoid controversial fiber sources

Avery Dennison is working with external certification experts, including Rainforest Alliance, to assess the potential risk to the company’s supply chain of illegal timber or irresponsibly harvested fiber and develop systems and procedures for documenting, verifying and reporting supplier performance.

Avery Dennison materials and solutions that provide sustainable advantages include a new portfolio of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper label materials; a portfolio of labeling products containing 10 to 100 percent post-consumer waste; and a wide range of apparel labels and packaging made from recycled and recyclable papers. In addition, 49 of Avery Dennison‘s facilities have attained FSC chain-of-custody certification. Only FSC CoC-certified operations are allowed to label products with the FSC trademarks.

Avery Dennison Unveils New North American Collection of Price-Neutral FSC ® -Certified Label Constructions

MENTOR, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials today introduced a new collection of North American Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper label materials. The new products’ prices are comparable with those of non-certified alternatives to drive the use of FSC-certified materials throughout the value chain.

The new collection of FSC-certified products contains 22 specifications featuring three paper facestocks – Fasson® 54# Semi-Gloss FSC, Fasson Lightweight Dairy FSC and Fasson Estate Label® No. 8 FSC – commonly used in wine, spirits, dairy and food applications. The new offering is a result of the company’s commitment to develop and offer sustainable label and packaging solutions to converters and brand owners.

House of Marley stays green goes Blue(tooth)

House of Marley (yes, that Marley) has been making stylish audio accessories for the past few years, and donating five percent of the profits to the Marley family’s 1Love charitable organization. The company is expanding its lineup in 2013 with new headphones, Bluetooth portable speakers, and even some high-end home audio gear.

And going along with the company’s eco-friendly principles, many of the products are made with an “upcycled” fabric the company calls Rewind. It’s made from reclaimed hemp and organic cotton, combined with the fibers of recycled water bottles, and finished using water-based dyes. Sounds righteous.
