Report: Top Gear in dustup over alleged staged hovercraft scene [w/video]

Top Gear Hovervan destroying a restaurant - video screencap

Filed under:

Top Gear walks a very narrow line between documentary, sitcom and reality television. And while some aspects of it are true, it shouldn’t be a huge shock that there are plenty of staged elements. Still, there seem to be elements of the British public that think everything shown on the telly is true, which makes the latest controversy over Top Gear‘s fakery seem rather silly to us.

The anger stems from the July 21 episode, which actually airs tonight on BBC America (spoiler alert from here out), where Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May attempt to convert a Ford Transit into a hovercraft. The resulting hovervan can work on the road, and can kind of work on the water, as demonstrated during an extended cruise on the River Avon.

This is where people are getting angry. In one scene, the trio pass a riverside restaurant and decided to stop in for a bite. Patrons sitting on the water’s edge are then mercilessly blown and splashed by the jet wash of the hovervan’s fans. Here’s the controversy – those “patrons” were apparently staged actors. Yes, Top Gear is in trouble with the British public because they used actors for a segment rather than ruining the days of unsuspecting people.

Video and images were released on Twitter by one of the actors, according to Britain’s The Mirror. A BBC spokesperson’s response to this latest uproar is pretty much what we were thinking as we watched the episode last weekend: “I think Top Gear viewers are intelligent enough not to have been taken in.” Clearly not all of them. Check out video of the stunt below.

2014 Ram ProMaster configurator reporting for heavy duty

By Brandon Turkus

Filed under:

Ram has brought the configurator online for all sizes of its new ProMaster van, known to the rest of the world as the Fiat Ducato. Destined to take on the new Ford Transit and Nissan NV, the ProMaster is available in three sizes – 1500, 2500, and 3500.

Once a size has been chosen, the world is your oyster. We could (probably) spend the rest of our day with this configurator and not repeat a build once. Each truck can be had in different styles ranging from windowed van to cargo hauler to cutaway truck, while buyers can also choose from a number of wheelbases and roof heights.

Add to that an options sheet that’s almost Porsche-like in length, and you get a van that can be completely customized to the needs of your business. Check out all three configurators at the following links: 1500, 2500 and 3500.

Video: Highlights from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, including the McLaren P1 and a Ford Transit running the hill

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

The sole purpose of this post is as a time-waster, and since you shouldn’t have to work to waste time, we’ve done it for you. In the numerous videos below you’ll find cars that have lately been in the news tramping all over the grounds of Lord March’s estate in Goodwood, England.

There’s the McLaren P1 heading up the hill, the Jaguar Project 7, then a casually-driven Porsche 917 followed by an even-more-casually-driven Porsche 956, topped off by a Porsche 936 that is anything but casually driven. The next round is the flame-spitting Peugeot 405 T16 Pikes Peak from Climb Dance, a camera mounted on the Peugeot RCZ R after it showing you what the whole, uninterrupted run up the hill looks like. For a real head-turner, we couldn’t embed it but there’s Andy Reid blasting up the hill in a Ford Transit Supervan with a Cosworth 3000 V6 engine.

The modern racing contingent has Allan McNish doing the hill in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro he used to win Le Mans and Lewis Hamilton making lots of tire smoke in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas MGP-W02. For comparison, that’s followed by Nick Heidfeld’s record-setting run up the hill in 1999 in the McLaren MP4/14 . The classic racing contingent is headlined by 71-year-old Giacomo Agostini on an MV Agusta.

Finally, there are the miscellaneous exhaust notes of all kinds of supercars headed to the start for the supercar run. You’ll find it all below. Enjoy.

Ford Races Forward in China

By John Rosevear, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Ford has been spending big bucks to expand its lineup in China, and recent sales results suggest that Chinese consumers are liking what they’re seeing: The Blue Oval‘s sales through the first two months of 2013 were up 46% over year-ago totals.

That’s huge. How huge? It trounced market leader General Motors7.9% gain over the same two months – itself a good result for a period in which sales at rivals Toyota and Honda actually declined.

More to the point, it’s proof that Ford’s product strategy is playing quite well in China – and that bodes very well for the Blue Oval‘s ongoing expansion plans.

Big gains in a sluggish market
While most automakers report monthly sales results in the areas in which they do business, automakers doing business in China generally present their January and February results as a combined number. That’s because Chinese New Year, a week-long holiday celebration, sometimes falls in January (like in 2012) and sometimes in February (as it did this year) – making year-over-year monthly comparisons complicated.

But this year, despite losing a week of sales to the holiday, Ford’s Chinese operation still posted a sales gain of 7% in February that looks even better when you dig into the details.

Ford operates two separate joint ventures in China: Changan Ford Automobile, which produces familiar global Ford cars like the Focus, and a joint venture with Chinese truckmaker Jiangling Motors that produces Ford-branded commercial and government vehicles based on Ford’s Transit and E350 vans.

Of those two, Changan Ford is the more significant operation, outselling the truck venture by more than two to one. And its sales have been rising sharply lately – up 39% in February alone — as Ford brings more of its well-regarded global products to the Middle Kingdom.

Familiar Fords finding success in China
Ford introduced its current global Focus compact to China last spring, with a twist: It’s called “New Focus” and positioned as an upscale offering alongside the prior-generation (“Classic Focus“) model. It has proven to be quite popular, as the two Focuses have combined to become one of China’s best-selling nameplates.

The (New) Focus was the first of 15 new Fords destined to be launched in China by mid-decade, and its success promised good things for the models that followed. The latest of those is the Kuga SUV, a near-twin of the Escape SUV in the U.S. market. It made its Chinese debut early this year and appears to be competing well with its key local rivals, Volkswagen‘s Tiguan and Honda’sCR-V.

The market for SUVs in China has been strong in recent months, a bright spot amid sluggish growth in the overall automotive market. That strength hasn’t been lost on Ford, which is planning to expand its Chinese SUV lineup by two in the next few months: The EcoSport (a small inexpensive SUV based on the Fiesta) …read more

All-New 2014 Ram ProMaster Priced, Real Vans Start at $27,525

By Kirk Seaman

Ram has announced pricing for its new 2014 ProMaster, a line of work vans based on the front-wheel-drive Fiat Ducato. For $27,025, buyers will get a van with a cab and a cutaway chassis; prices for a complete van start at $27,525. So for just $500 more, consider that a bargain. With the choice of a standard gas engine or an optional diesel, three wheelbases, two roof heights, and four cargo-floor lengths, the ProMaster’s configuration flexibility should help it win fans, even if some buyers might be wary of a FWD full-size carryall.

The standard motor is a 280-hp version of Chrysler’s Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The step-up motor is a turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel four-cylinder good for 174 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque; it operates through a six-speed automated manual gearbox.

Both engines are available in the full range of ProMaster vans. Wheelbases include 118, 136, or 159 inches; 90- and 101-inch roofs heights are available; and cargo floor lengths of 105, 123, 146, or 160 inches can be spec’d. All-wheel drive is not available.

The $27,525 mentioned above gets you a ProMaster 3500 with a 136-inch wheelbase, the low roof, and the gas V-6. From there, pricing is as follows:

3500 159-inch wheelbase: $27,930
3500 159-inch wheelbase, extended frame: $28,430
1500 118-inch wheelbase, low roof: $29,625
1500 136-inch wheelbase, low roof: $30,515
1500 136-inch wheelbase, high roof: $31,515
2500 136-inch wheelbase, high roof: $32,515
2500 159-inch wheelbase, high roof: $33,870
2500 window-equipped 159-inch wheelbase, high roof: $34,250
3500 159-inch wheelbase, high roof: $36,345
3500 159-inch wheelbase, high roof, extended body: $37,145

The EcoDiesel costs $4000 to add to any of the configurations.

While Ram has not announced fuel economy or any options information, the ProMaster model brings the total of big vans now available to four: the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the Nissan NV, and the new Ford Transit. Ram is betting that the ProMaster will distinguish itself from the competition with best-in-class features that include cargo capacity, payload, and a low cost of ownership. That’s all well and good, but what will it look like with a Viking battle airbrushed on the side?

Official: Ford Transit gets Combinator to build van of your dreams

By Jeffrey N. Ross

With the 2014 Ford Transit coming with more available factory configurations than the E-Series ever offered, Ford has come up with a quick and easy way for customers to choose from numerous build combinations. To help display which body styles, wheelbases and roof heights can be equipped with one another, the “2014 Transit Combinator” gets the job done.

The Euro-style Transit allows for an amazing number of options including four body styles, four roof heights and six wheelbase/frame options, and the Combinator offers an easy drop-down menu allowing potential customers to research the van before it goes on sale this fall; of course, this doesn’t even factor in the Transit’s three possible engine options. Even if you’re not sure which version of the full-size van you might need, the self-explanatory random configuration button is always there for assistance.
