Ernest Moniz’s Business Connections Draw Mixed Response From Environmentalists

By The Huffington Post News Editors

ProPublica’s Justin Elliott reports:

When President Obama nominated Ernest Moniz to be energy secretary earlier this month, he hailed the nuclear physicist as a “brilliant scientist” who, among his many talents, had effectively brought together “prominent thinkers and energy companies” in the continuing effort to figure out a safe and economically sound energy future for the country.

Indeed, Moniz’s collaborative work – best captured in the industry-backed research program he oversaw at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology – is well known. So, too, is his support for Obama’s “all of the above” energy strategy – one that embraces, fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewable energy sources.

Ernest Moniz’s Clean Coal Stance At Odds With EPA’s New Standards?

By The Huffington Post News Editors

When President Barack Obama tapped MIT physicist Ernest Moniz to be the next Secretary of Energy earlier this month, environmentalists were quick to raise concerns over his outspoken support of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas. Now they’re worried about his record on clean coal.

Moniz co-authored a 2009 report on reducing carbon dioxide emissions from coal plants, which looked favorably on the use of so-called clean coal. “It’s cheap,” he said at the time, “there’s lots of it and there’s lots of it in places with high demand, namely the U.S., China and India.” He added, “Sequestration is a key enabling technology for coal use in a carbon-constrained world.”

Sequestration, as outlined in that report, involves capturing the carbon dioxide from coal-fired power plants, compressing it into a liquid, then injecting it deep into the earth’s old oil fields or saline aquifers, according to Scientific American, which reported on the study when it was released.

Will Secretary Moniz Put Energy Back Into The Department of Energy?

By James Conca, Contributor

President Barack Obama announced Monday that he will nominate Dr. Ernest Moniz to head the U.S. Department of Energy as Secretary. This was a wise move. There are not many who are better qualified, few with as much experience, and none with more chutzpah than Ernie Moniz. And he will need all three if he is to accomplish anything in a job that has been a standing nightmare for decades. …read more

Report: Obama picks new leaders for Dept. of Energy and EPA

By Seyth Miersma

Filed under:

President Barack Obama announced his nominees to lead the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy today. After speaking out about global warming in both his Inaugural Address and State of the Union speech this year, the President hopes that the new appointees will help lead the administration toward meaningful climate change policy-making.

Gina McCarthy will step from her current role as assistant EPA administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation, to replace Lisa Jackson for that agency’s top spot. Meanwhile, Ernest Moniz will replace Steven Chu as Secretary of Energy in the President’s Cabinet. Both nominees will require confirmation by the Senate.

Moniz most recently held a position as the Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Energy Initiative, overseeing projects that angled to reduce greenhouse gasses. Despite this, his appointment has been met with skepticism from some environmental groups who don’t like his record of partnering with big oil companies like BP, Shell and Chevron.

McCarthy has worked with both Democrats and Republicans in the past, including a stint with Obama‘s Presidential opponent, Mitt Romney. At the announcement, the President said of McCarthy, “Gina has focused on practical, cost-effective ways to keep our air clean and our economy growing.”

Ernest Moniz, Considered Fracking Shill By Some Environmentalists, Sparks Concern Amid Energy Department Nomination

By The Huffington Post News Editors

In a Monday morning announcement that was long anticipated but not widely welcomed by environmentalists, President Barack Obama tapped Ernest Moniz, director of the Energy Initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as the nominee for the next secretary of energy.

“Ernie knows that we can produce more energy and grow our economy while still taking care of our air, our water and our climate,” Obama said during a press conference on Monday morning announcing Moniz’s nomination, along with his other picks, including Gina McCarthy to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

While some environmental groups cheered the pending nomination, others have expressed deep concern over Moniz due to his outspoken support of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas, better known as fracking. Some critics have gone as far as to call him a “shill” for the shale gas industry.

Today, President Obama announced his nominees for director of the Office of Management and Budget, Secretary of Energy and administrator of the EPA.

Sylvia Matthews Burwell, the President's pick for Office of Management and Budget Director, is an expert on budgetary and domestic policy. She served as Deputy Director of the OMB from 1998 to 2001, as well as Deputy Chief of Staff to the President and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Treasury during the Clinton administration.

President Obama said that Burwell “understands that our goal when we put together a budget is not just to make the numbers add up. Our goal is also to reignite the true engine of economic growth in this country, and that is a strong and growing middle class — to offer ladders of opportunity for anybody willing to climb them.”
