World's oldest woman dies at 115 in Japan

A Japanese official says a woman in his town near Tokyo who became world’s oldest living female just last month has died at 115.

Koto Okubo died Saturday at a nursing home in Kawasaki City, according to city official Mitsuhiro Kozuka. He said her relatives declined to release the cause of her death and family details.

Born Dec. 24, 1897, Okubo held her title for less than a month following the death of Dina Manfredini of the United States.

Manfredini died within two weeks after becoming the world’s oldest person. Jiroemon Kimura, a 115-year-old man in Japan‘s ancient capital of Kyoto, inherited that title. He was born on April 19, 1897.

The city official said Okubo had lived with one of her sons at the same nursing home.

Oldest living US citizen, dies at 114 in South Carolina

A 114-year-old South Carolina woman who was the oldest living U.S. citizen has died, two of her daughters said Saturday.

Mamie Rearden of Edgefield, who held the title as the country’s oldest person for about two weeks, died Wednesday at a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, said Sara Rearden of Burtonsville, Maryland, and Janie Ruth Osborne of Edgefield. They said their mother broke her hip after a fall about three weeks ago.

The Gerontology Research Group, which verifies age information for Guinness World Records, listed Mamie Rearden as the oldest living American after last month’s passing of 115-year-old Dina Manfredini of Iowa. Rearden’s Sept. 7, 1898, birth was recorded in the 1900 U.S. Census, the group’s Robert Young said.

Rearden was more than a year younger than the world’s oldest person, 115-year-old Jiroemon Kimura of Japan.

“My mom was not president of the bank or anything, but she was very instrumental in raising a family and being a community person,” said Sara Rearden, her youngest child. “Everybody can’t go be president of a bank or president of a college, but we feel just as proud of her in her role as housewife and particularly as mother and homemaker.”

Mamie Rearden, who was married to her husband Oacy for 59 years until his death in 1979, raised 11 children, 10 of whom survive, Sara Rearden said. She lived in the family homestead with a son and a daughter on land that had been in the family since her father’s accumulation of acreage made him one of the area’s largest black landowners.

Her father sent her off to earn a teaching certificate at Bettis Academy on the far side of the county, and she would spend an entire day on a loaded wagon to reach the school along dirt roads, her daughter said. She taught for several years until becoming pregnant with her third child.

In the mid-1960s at age 65, when some settled into retirement, she learned to drive a car for the first time and started volunteering for an Edgefield County program that had her driving to the end of remote rural roads to find children whose parents were keeping them home from school, Sara Rearden said.

Mamie Rearden always counseled that her children should treat others as they wanted to be treated and that included never gossiping or speaking ill of others. When asked about a preacher’s uninspiring sermon, her daughter recalled her mother saying: “`Well, it came from the Bible.’ She never would bad-mouth them.”

Japanese man, 115, becomes world's oldest person

A Japanese mayor has hailed a resident of his city for becoming the world’s oldest person.

At 115 years old, Jiroemon Kimura inherited the title from an American woman who died Monday.

Yasushi Nakayama, the mayor of Kyotango, near Japan‘s ancient capital of Kyoto, confirmed Kimura’s status Tuesday, calling him “the pride of our town.”

Kimura, born April 19, 1897, is 15 days younger than his predecessor, Dina Manfredini, who died in Iowa less than two weeks after inheriting the title as the world’s oldest living person.

Kimura, a former postal employee, has 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. He lives with his son’s family.

Kimura’s family declined to comment to reporters Tuesday out of consideration for Manfredini’s family.

World's oldest person, 115-year-old woman, dies

A 115-year-old Iowa woman has died less than two weeks after inheriting the title of world’s oldest person, her family said Monday.

Dina Manfredini, who lived at the Bishop Drumm Retirement Center in Johnston, died Monday morning, according to her granddaughter Lori Logli. Logli said Manfredini had been suffering from a fever.

Guinness World Records confirmed Manfredini inherited the title of world’s oldest living person less than two weeks ago. Besse Cooper of Georgia previously held the title at age 116.

Logli said her grandmother was known as a great cook who baked Italian bread every Sunday for her family, and meticulously made pasta by hand. She called Manfredini a hard worker.

“She was active her whole life,” Logli said. “She was a very giving person.”

Logli said Manfredini also looked very young for her age. She had salt-and-pepper hair until she was about 110 years old.

“She could not believe that she was as old as she was,” she said with a small laugh. “When we would tell her she would just shake her head in disbelief. She’d say, ‘Oh, I’m an old lady.”‘

Robert Young, a senior consultant of gerontology for Guinness, said a Japanese man, Jiroemon Kimura, is believed to now hold the title. He was born on April 19, 1897, which makes him just 15 days younger than Manfredini. Young said Kimura, of Kyotango in Kyoto, also is believed to be the second-oldest man in documented history.

Officials have confirmed Kimura’s age, and now are checking in with the retirement home where he lives. They expect to announce his title shortly.

Manfredini was born on April 4, 1897, in Italy, according to Guinness officials. She moved to the United States in 1920 and settled in Des Moines with her husband.

Young said that on Dec. 13, Manfredini became No. 10 on the list of world’s longest-living people. She also has the designation of the world’s longest-living immigrant because of her move to the U.S.

Logli said Manfredini was primarily a homemaker and mother. She had four children, seven grandchildren and more than a dozen great-grandchildren. She later cleaned houses until she was 90 and lived independently until she was 110 years old.

Young said Manfredini is the only verified Italian person to reach age 115 in documented history.

“We are fortunate to have had her this long in our lives as a mother and grandmother. She truly was a special gift from God and touched a lot of lives. She will always be remembered as a great cook, baker, and gardener,” the family’s statement said.

Manfredini’s brief reign is not the shortest. Emma Tillman of East Hartford, Connecticut, held the title of world’s oldest living person for just four days in 2007. She was 114.
