Body found in Los Angeles hotel water tank needs more tests

More tests are needed to determine whether the young Canadian tourist whose body was found wedged in a water tank on top of a Los Angeles hotel was killed or the victim of a bizarre accident, authorities said.

An autopsy performed Thursday didn’t provide definitive answers into the case of Elisa Lam of Vancouver, British Columbia. Police have called her death suspicious.

Coroner’s officials will await toxicology tests before making a final determination.

Guest complaints about low water pressure prompted a maintenance worker to make the gruesome discovery on Tuesday in a water cistern atop the Cecil Hotel.

Before she died, hotel surveillance footage showed Lam inside an elevator pushing buttons and sticking her head out the doors, looking in both directions.

Guests at the time described the water as having a terrible taste. Water tested from the hotel didn’t contain any live bacteria that would cause illness.

Although county health officials issued a do-not drink order, the results that came back Thursday indicated the water was safe from a “microbiological standpoint,” said Angelo Bellomo, the county’s director of environmental health.

“We can’t say what the quality of the water was prior to the samples,” taken on Tuesday, Bellomo said. “

Lam traveled alone to Los Angeles on Jan. 26 and was last seen five days later by workers at the 600-room hotel near Skid Row, an area with large numbers of homeless people. She intended to travel to Santa Cruz, about 350 miles (560 kilometers) north of Los Angeles.

High school classmate Alex Ristea of Vancouver called Lam’s death shocking and said she was one of the friendliest people he knew.

“This is the last person I expect out of all my friends to have something like this happen to her,” Ristea said.

Ristea said he believes Lam had gone to California for a holiday, saying she had posted pictures on Facebook from tourist locations such as the San Diego Zoo.

University of British Columbia spokesman Randy Schmidt confirmed that Lam had attended summer school at the university but was not registered for the current session.

Reached by phone, a man who confirmed that it was Lam’s home of said he was busy and hung up when asked to speak about her. A woman reached later at the same number, when told it was a reporter calling, also hung up after saying, “Sorry.”

Body of Canadian woman found in hotel water tank

Canadian tourist Elisa Lam had been missing for about two weeks when officials at the historic Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles found her body in a water cistern on the hotel roof.

Guest complaints about low water pressure prompted a maintenance worker to make the gruesome discovery Tuesday, and officials were trying to determine if the 21 year old was killed or if her death was just a bizarre accident.

The discovery of Lam’s body called into question the safety of the hotel’s water. She was found in one of four cisterns that provide guests with water for washing and drinking. Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials issued a do-not-drink order while a lab analyzes the hotel water, said Terrance Powell, a director coordinating the department’s response. The results of the lab tests were expected to be released Thursday.

Powell said the likelihood of contamination is minimal given the large amount of water the body was found in, but the department is being extra cautious.

LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez called Lam’s death suspicious. Before she died, hotel surveillance footage showed her inside an elevator pushing buttons and sticking her head out the doors, looking in both directions.

Lam, of Vancouver, British Columbia, traveled alone to Los Angeles on Jan. 26 and was last seen five days later by workers at the 600-room hotel near Skid Row.

The cisterns are on a platform at least 10 feet above the roof. To get to the tanks, someone would have to go to the top floor then take a staircase with a locked door and emergency alarm preventing roof access.

Another ladder would have to be taken to the platform and a person would have to climb the side of the tank. Lopez said there are no security cameras on the roof.

Lam intended to travel to Santa Cruz, about 350 miles north of Los Angeles. Officials said she tended to use public transportation and had been in touch with her family daily until she disappeared.

Water tested after body found in LA hotel tank

British tourist Michael Baugh and his wife said water had only trickled for days as they brushed their teeth, showered and drank from the taps at the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, but they could not have imagined the disturbing reason.

The body of a Canadian woman was later discovered at the bottom of one of four cisterns on the roof of the historic hotel near Skid Row. The tanks provide water for hotel taps and would have been used by guests for washing and drinking.

“The moment we found out, we felt a bit sick to the stomach, quite literally,” Baugh said.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials were expected to release the results of tests on the water on Thursday.

When the body was discovered on Tuesday, they issued a do-not-drink order while a lab analyzes the water, said Terrance Powell, a director coordinating the department’s response. The disclosure contradicts a previous police statement that the water had been deemed safe.

Powell said the water was also used for cooking in the hotel; a coffee shop in the hotel would remain closed and has been instructed to sanitize its food equipment before reopening.

“Our biggest concern is going to be fecal contamination because of the body in the water,” Powell said. He said the likelihood of contamination is “minimal” given the large amount of water the body was found in, but the department is being extra cautious.

Powell said the hotel hired a water treatment specialist after the department required it to do so to disinfect its plumbing lines.

A call to the hotel was not returned.

The remains of Elisa Lam, 21, were found by a maintenance worker at the 600-room hotel that charges $65 a night after guests complained about the low water pressure.

Police detectives were working to determine if her death was the result of foul play or an accident.

LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez called it suspicious and said a coroner’s investigation will determine Lam’s cause of death.

Canadian tourist's body found in hotel water tank

Police were trying to determine Wednesday if the death of a Canadian woman who was missing for weeks before her body was found wedged into a water tank atop a Los Angeles hotel was the result of foul play or an accident.

The body of 21-year-old Elisa Lam was discovered Tuesday by a maintenance worker at the 600-room, downtown Cecil Hotel after guests complained of low water pressure.

Lam, of Vancouver, British Columbia, traveled to California alone on Jan. 26 and was last seen five days later by workers at the hotel near Skid Row that offers rooms for $65 a night.

Police initially called her disappearance suspicious. Investigators are now considering the possibility of foul play because of the location where the body was found. It was unclear what water from the tanks was used for.

An autopsy could be performed as early as Thursday to determine the cause of death.

Lam intended to travel to Santa Cruz, about 350 miles north of Los Angeles. Officials said she tended to use public transportation and had been in touch with her family daily until she disappeared.

Hotel surveillance footage showed Lam inside an elevator pushing buttons and at one point sticking her head out the doors and looking in both directions.

A call to the hotel seeking comment was not immediately returned. It was built in the 1920s and refurbished several years ago. Police said there have been reports of crime at the site.

The hotel had once been the occasional home to infamous serial killers such as Richard Ramirez, known as the Night Stalker, and Austrian prison author Jack Unterweger, who was convicted of murdering nine prostitutes in Europe and the U.S., the Los Angeles Times reported.

Body of missing Canadian tourist found in LA hotel water tank, police say

Police say they have determined that a body found in a water tank on the roof of a downtown Los Angeles hotel is a Canadian tourist who’d been missing for nearly three weeks.

Police spokeswoman Officer Diana Figueroa said Tuesday night that investigators used body markings to identify 21-year-old Elisa Lam, a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia who traveled to California alone and was last seen at the hotel on Jan. 31.

Earlier Tuesday a hotel maintenance worker found the body while looking into complaints of poor water pressure.

Police say they will attempt to determine whether Lam’s death was the result of foul play or a bizarre accident.

Lam traveled to California alone on Jan. 27, and was last seen by workers at the Cecil Hotel on Jan. 31.

After hotel guests complained about low water pressure, an inspection of the rooftop water tanks revealed the body, Officer Sara Faden said.

Officials were still struggling to remove the body from the water tank late Tuesday afternoon to send it to the coroner’s office, Faden said.

“It appears that the location of the water tanks is very small and configured in a very tight way so it’s a little more difficult to get the body out,” Faden said.

Investigators will then determine whether there was foul play or “a very, very strange accident,” Faden said.

Faden said it’s unclear what condition the body is in.

Despite the hotel website’s photos of glamorous parts of greater Los Angeles, including Beverly Hills, the downtown area it is located in has long struggled against the creeping destitution of nearby Skid Row, where drug addiction and homelessness is rampant.

A call to the hotel seeking comment was not immediately returned.

At the time of Lam’s disappearance, Los Angeles police alerted the public that her disappearance appeared suspicious and may suggest foul play.

Her final destination in California was Santa Cruz, about 350 miles north of Los Angeles, and officials said she tended to use public transportation. Lam had been in touch with her family daily until she disappeared.

Body found water tank at LA hotel may be missing Canadian tourist

A hotel maintenance worker investigating complaints of low water pressure found a body Tuesday on the roof of a downtown hotel where a missing Canadian tourist was last seen in January, Los Angeles police said.

The body of a woman in her 20s was found around 10 a.m. in a water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel, Officer Sara Faden said.

Vancouver, British Columbia, resident Elisa Lam traveled to California alone on Jan. 27, and the 21-year-old was last seen by workers at the Cecil Hotel on Jan. 31.

After hotel guests complained about low water pressure, an inspection of the rooftop water tanks revealed the body, Faden said.

Officials were still struggling to remove the body from the water tank late Tuesday afternoon to send it to the coroner’s office, which means it’s too soon to know the victim’s identity with certainty, Faden said.

“It appears that the location of the water tanks is very small and configured in a very tight way so it’s a little more difficult to get the body out,” Faden said.

Investigators will then determine whether there was foul play or “a very, very strange accident,” Faden said.

Faden said it’s unclear what condition the body is in.
