Disney's Big LucasArts Gamble

By Demitrios Kalogeropoulos, The Motley Fool

Disney is through playing games.

The House of Mouse just shut down LucasArts, the video game studio it purchased along with Lucasfilm for $4 billion late last year. Almost all of the 200 people employed at LucasArts have been laid off, according to The Wall Street Journal. And the two new games that they were working on, Star Wars: 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault, may never see the light of day.

Disney is walking away from some potentially huge video game content around the Star Wars brand. And instead, it’s putting all of its gaming chips this year onto one title centered on its own characters like Buzz Lightyear and Jack Sparrow. Called Disney Infinity, that game is slated to come out in August.

Infinity is the company’s answer to Skylanders, the action figure/console game hit from Activision Blizzard that has quickly grown into one of Activision’s tentpole franchises. The big draw in this category is that gaming revenue gets a boost from the sales of toy figures that accompany the game discs. Players collect any number of action figures that they can interact with both inside and outside of the console game.

The result can be a bounty at the cash register. Activision’s Skylander franchise sales rocketed to $1 billion in just 15 months on the strength of millions of toy sales.

Disney was already going to need a similar kind of hit for Infinity to reverse the losses coming out of its gaming studio, Disney Interactive. That business group shed more than $200 million for Disney over each of the last three years, making it by far the worst performer in the House of Mouse. Even Disney’s studio arm, which occasionally has to absorb expensive flops like last year’s John Carter, consistently kicks in more than $600 million to the company’s bottom line.

Disney has a decent shot at hitting it big with Infinity. It might not be the first to the party in this video game sector, but Disney boasts a wide catalog of characters that young gamers already know well. The game will include figures from among Disney’s hit properties, including Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., and Pirates of the Caribbean.

However, Activision isn’t ceding the category to Disney — not by a long shot. The gaming company is working on an innovative twist to its Skylanders franchise, and will have a sequel out soon. This rivalry may not be a Star Wars-level epic, but it should be entertaining anyway. Stay tuned.

From its vast catalog of characters to its monster collection of media networks, much of Disney’s allure for investors lies in its diversity. Dave Thomas, Man Reunited With Impounded Dog, Allegedly Threatens To Sue Woman Who Helped Him (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A California man reunited with his beloved dog after a photo of the two was posted to Facebook is now allegedly threatening to sue the Good Samaritan who helped him, KTLA reports.

Dave Thomas of San Bernardino, Calif., was briefly jailed earlier this month for failing to appear in court over traffic violations. His dog, a 2-year-old pitbull named Buzz Lightyear, was impounded at a local shelter as a result, but Thomas couldn’t afford to pay the $400 to get him out.

Maria Sanchez, a photographer and animal activist at the shelter, took a touching photo of Thomas and his dog while they were at the facility and posted it to Facebook, where it went viral. Donations poured in, exceeding the cost of the impound fee, and Thomas and his dog were reunited.

A Closer Look at Disney Infinity

When Disney Infinity was first announced a few weeks ago, I couldn’t decide whether it was a childhood dream come true or a terrifyingly efficient money-spinner. To be totally honest, it’s both – it’s going to make a ridiculous amount of money, but Disney Infinity is not a cynical or exploitative exercise. It’s creative, playful, and preserves the soul of the cherished characters and places that it brings to life.

When you look at how kids play with their toys, they’re born genre alchemists. Spider-Man can fight against Creepers from Minecraft; Hulk and Barbie can drive around in the Batmobile together; Iron Man and Buzz Lightyear can form a crime-fighting superteam in space. Disney Infinity taps right into this impulse, harnessing the imagination in a way that licensed kids’ games seldom bother to do.

Disney Infinity is Minecraft Meets LittleBigPlanet

Disney will announce an ambitious, open-world sandbox game called Disney Infinity in January 2013, according to a report. Disney Infinity is planned to take advantage of unspecified consoles, Android devices, and Apple’s iPad for cross-platform play.

- via Polygon

Assets leaked to Polygon detail characters, gameplay scenarios, mechanics, and character skills for Disney Infinity. For example, Woody from Toy Story uses a Just Cause 2-esque tether to stick to an aircraft controlled by Buzz Lightyear, which slings him into the sky. In another scenario, a player flings explosives from a slingshot to tear down a block castle. On the opposite end of the destruction spectrum, you can compile various pieces to construct a racetrack. Other abilities include invisibility, ranged combat, damage modifiers, and swimming, each appropriate to the character you control.
