Promising a “new level of Craftsmanship in the A segment,” Audi has revealed its latest sedan offerings ahead of the New York Auto Show. Serving up understated (but familiar) good looks and a variety of powertrains, the new A3 models will be available in a variety of powertrains, including the long-awaited S3 variant. Even the A3 Sportback returns, but it sounds like Audi will only offer its five-door wagon as a plug-in hybrid in the U.S. market.

The 2015 Audi A3 will come with a choice of three engines, not including the high-performance S3 variant. Base models get a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder, rated at 170 horsepower, but buyers can also opt for a 2.0-liter turbo four that should produce in the neighborhood of 210 horsepower (final figures are still pending). If you prefer diesels, the A3 is available with Audi’s 2.0-liter TDI turbodiesel, which makes 150 horsepower and copious amounts of torque. The S3 gets its own, stronger 2.0-liter turbo four, which (sadly) has not yet been rated for output yet.

All engines come mated to Audi’s six-speed S tronic gearbox, which means that row-it-yourself shifting won’t be available when the models are released. Audi’s Drive Select will be available on A3 models, too, allowing the driver to fine tune shift points, throttle settings and steering response to road conditions. Front-wheel drive will be standard, but it sounds as if A3 models will be available with quattro AWD, too. As always with Audi’s S models, the S3 will come only with quattro AWD.

Audi’s interiors are among the best in the business, and it doesn’t look like th A3 or S3 will disappoint here, either. The cabin is highlighted by a unique wraparound dash, and Audi will give buyers the option to add things like LED ambient lighting, a Bang & Olufsen Audio System and the upgraded Audi connect infotainment system. New York: Audi S3 Sedan boasts SAE 296 hp, 0-60 in 4.7 seconds

By Matt Davis

The (technically speaking) 2015 Audi S3 sedan should start at right near $39,000.

The last time Audi gifted the world with a small sport sedan was way back when the A4 wasn’t an entry-luxury executive car costing relative gads of dough, so maybe since the mid-1990s. In a company decision reversal, we’re now officially getting the new A3 Sportback starting later this year, but that’s a five-door hatch and not a big volume attraction for markets like the United States. And there’s no guarantee we’ll get the S3 Sportback version yet. So, what to do?

An S3 sedan is what. Audi was nice enough to usher us in to a private audience with this hotly awaited model in a westside Manhattan pier warehouse prior to the official unveil at the New York Auto Show tomorrow. Here is just a knee-jerk reaction to lead off… She do look damned fine, kids. (We’ll have live images to share soon, so keep an eye on this post later.)

This heartier version of the new smaller notchback sedan from Ingolstadt is set to launch in western Europe as of December this year (after the A3 sedan in September), and US deliveries will begin during summer 2014. Talking with Audi experts at this little get-together and shoving some numbers around, the (technically speaking) 2015 Audi S3 sedan should start at right near $39,000. US S3 sedans come standard with a sunroof, 18-inch wheels, full leather, Sirius satellite radio, the three-spoke sport steering wheel with shift paddles for the also-standard six-speed S-tronic, and fully automated adjustable sport seats. Unfortunately, no six-speed manual shifting will be offered.

Geneva: Audi A3 G-Tron offers big range, few emissions

By Zach Bowman

Audi A3 g-tron

Audi is exploring a variety of sustainable transportation technologies beyond the traditional diesel, hybrid, plug-in and electric options, including the compressed natural gas A3 Sportback G-Tron that debuted today at the Geneva Motor Show.

The most interesting thing about this rather innocuous-looking A3 Sportback is that when run on Audi e-gas, the car becomes completely carbon neutral, emitting no more CO2 than was chemically input in this special fuel’s production. Audi has already broken ground on a new plant – powered by renewable energy, of course – that uses electrolysis to produce e-gas, which could then be made available through any natural gas distribution network.

A turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine burns the e-gas, or any garden variety CNG, for 110 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque, but the real story lies in the machine’s natural gas tanks. The two light-weight composite vessels weigh in at just under 60 pounds each and can store a shave over 30 pounds of fuel combined and 2,900 psi. The tanks are made from a four-layer composite comprised of a gas-impermeable polyamide polymer, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, glass fiber reinforced polymer and a high-strength epoxy resin.

The A3 Sportback G-Tron also features a new gas regulator to keep the fuel at the correct pressure for any given engine speed. If the tank pressure falls below 145 psi, the engine automatically and seamlessly switches over to gasoline operation. With its two on-board fuel sources, the five-door offers a bladder-busting range of approximately 807 miles.

2014 Audi A3 Sportback g-tron: A Naturally Gassy, “Greener” Five-Door

By Jens Meiners

Audi A3 g-tron concept

In response to ever more stringent CO2 emissions regulation, European carmakers are beginning to roll out vehicles fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). The latest and possibly most advanced of these is the Audi A3 g-tron, which sounds like it might be either a knockoff Transformer or maybe Young Jeezy’s robotic hype man. But it’s just a car. Based on the five-door A3 Sportback, it packs a 110-hp 1.4-liter TFSI engine that produces 148 lb-ft of torque and can combust both regular gasoline and CNG. The g-tron switches to gasoline operation automatically when the onboard CNG runs low, but the switch also can be triggered manually. READ MORE ››

Audi A3 e-tron Concept: Coming to America—Maybe [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

By Jens Meiners

Audi A3 e-tron concept

Including the indefinite hold put on the Audi R8 e-tron, the brand’s strategy on the implementation of electric vehicles may have stalled, but the German automaker is charging forward with its hybrid models. The proof will be in the pudding served at the Geneva auto show, where an almost-production-ready A3 e-tron bows. Based on the five-door A3 Sportback, the A3 e-tron concept packs a turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. READ MORE ››
