Prepare to Swoon: L'Wren Scott Teams Up With Banana Republic

By Randy Miller

If two labels speak to ladylike suiting (think: pencil skirts and tailored trousers) it’s L’Wren Scott and Banana Republic. So the upcoming collaboration wasn’t hard to imagine, and now we no longer need to with the release of Scott’s holiday sketches for Banana Republic. The capsule collection, which will be available nationwide and online beginning Dec. 5, will feature three original prints and more than 50 pieces that will encompass everything from sequined party dresses to tailored jeans. Showcasing feminine designs and rich fabrics like lace and faux fur, the clothing (and accessories!) are set to range from $40 to $165 – far less than one would shell out for Scott’s designer collections! If these sketches are any indication, we officially have our holiday party ensembles picked out and ready to go. Read on to see a surprising accessory from the line! …read more

Kenzo Resort 2014: Los Angeles by Way of Paris

By Kate Schweitzer

You can take Humberto Leon and Carol Lim out of California, but you can’t take the LA out of them. For the designers’ latest resort collection, they return to their childhoods in the suburbs of Los Angeles for inspiration. And inspired it is. From bold coral-hued bubble jackets to a blue flower-print long-sleeved crop top to black-and-white graphic palm-tree separates, this lineup looks like the makings of a perfect Summer pool party. And not only are the prints themselves fresh, but so is the hand-drawn technique – a welcome reprieve from the digital printing trend. But Kenzo isn’t Kenzo without a bit of that Parisian sensibility mixed in, and the brand’s new structured colorblock handbags offer that “we’re not in Cali anymore” edge.

KaufmanFranco Resort 2014: Simplicity Is the Ultimate Sophistication

By Justin Fenner

Is there anything more elegant than simplicity? For their Resort 2014 collection, Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco created easy-to-wear pieces with decidedly clean lines. A number of dresses, like a few strapless white shifts and a lime green gown, were accented at the waist with metal belt buckles. But other than those accents, decoration here was kept to a minimum – cut and color did most of the talking. Perhaps the most intricate pieces in the collection are a pair of trousers with a cutout pattern and a column dress covered in square sequins. But even those pieces have sharp, lean lines that are sure to appeal to this brand’s celebrity clientele and real women alike.

Vera Wang's Style Secret: Add One Really Big Accessory!

By Randy Miller

Vera Wang may be small, but her accessories sure aren’t! The chic designer, who favors minimalist black garb in her personal wardrobe, got some attention for an oversize belt she wore in Paris to the Little Black Dress exhibition. And while the cincher is major, it’s not the first time her extras caught our eye. So what’s the takeaway? When in doubt, follow Wang’s lead and keep the outfit streamlined and add one bold accent piece.

What better way to amp up head-to-toe solids than with oversize danglers. Wang worked a gold pair at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009.

Hello, statement necklace. Wang enhanced her peplum LBD with a sparkling collar at New York’s Plaza Hotel in 2010.

Another necklace, another black ensemble! For the 2010 CFDA Awards, the designer opted for layered beaded strands.

Hillary Clinton and Anna Wintour Join to Celebrate Oscar de la Renta

By Justin Fenner

Oscar de la Renta‘s designs carried Hillary Clinton through her posts as First Lady, senator, and Sec. of State with style. And Monday night, at a reception for an exhibit of the designer’s work at Bill Clinton’s presidential library in Little Rock, AR, Anna Wintour guessed that they’ll be just as useful when Hillary takes the White House.

“It’s anyone’s guess what the next chapter will be for this extraordinary woman. I can only hope that all of you here in Little Rock will be celebrating her come November 2016,” Wintour said to applause.

Hillary avoided any talk of her political aspirations, choosing instead to focus on de la Renta and his work. The Associated Press reports that she called the designer a “dear friend,” and later thanked him for treating “first ladies such as myself and Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush with such great support.”

The exhibit includes pieces worn by those women and some celebrities – the chartreuse dress from Carey Mulligan‘s May 2013 cover of Vogue dominates one corner of the exhibit.

The exhibit, which was curated by Andre Leon Talley, will be on display until Dec. 1, 2013. A look at the reception and the dresses on display, here. …read more

Suzy on Sale, and the Best Personal Wardobe Auctions From the Style Set

By Justin Fenner

If Suzy Menkes’s clothes could talk, we imagine they’d have a lot to say. After decades as a journalist covering the fashion industry, Menkes has witnessed her fair share of groundbreaking moments. So when pieces from her wardrobe go up for sale in an online auction on Thursday – lots include Ossie Clark dresses from the ’70s and a Chanel bag customized to say “Suzy” – bidders will have the opportunity to purchase a piece of fashion history.

But of course Menkes isn’t the only person in fashion who has sent items from her personal collection under the hammer. From Daphne Guinness’s charitable auction of couture to Pierre Berge’s record-breaking sale of the items he amassed with Yves Saint Laurent, fashion auctions have become truly memorable events. Get a look at Menkes’s auction – and others like it in years past – here in the gallery.
