Chloe's Claire Waight Keller Teaches Us How to Buy Pre-Fall

By Justin Fenner

With as many different options as are included in Pre-Fall collections – which are in stores now – deciding what pieces to buy can be a challenge. But Chloe designer Clare Waight Keller believes Pre-Fall should be a shopper’s go-to collection for strong basics.

“Pre-Fall should deliver timeless staples that anchor the main collection,” Keller said in an interview with Net-a-Porter’s online magazine The Edit. “It’s the best time to buy investment pieces because the main collections consist of more challenging cuts. Think of the ‘pre’ pieces as building blocks.”

She also explained that her inspiration for Chloe’s Pre-Fall 2013 collection – a vintage guitar book – informed not only the colors in the collection, but also its mixture of feminine and masculine shapes.

“I loved its eclectic ’60s palette. The baby-blue against cream, pink and brown created a cool English vibe,” she said. “Which in turn led me to explore the idea of ’60s guitar girls and their androgynous style – the contrast of a tailored silhouette against a feminine softness fascinated me.”

Chopard Gives Princess Diana a Sparkling Makeover

By Randy Miller

Prepare for a case of fashion déjà vu! Upon seeing the stills of Naomi Watts dressed in iconic looks for the upcoming September 2013 film Diana, we had an instant flashback to the ’90s. The resemblance between the actress and princess is an especially sparkling one, thanks to the addition of Chopard jewels.

The Geneva-based firm worked directly with the film’s costume designer, Julian Day, to compile a collection that the Princess of Wales may have selected for herself – jewels conceived to suit her haircut, match her sapphire engagement ring, and complement her fair complexion. Of the process, Caroline Scheufele, Chopard’s co-president and artistic director, said, “I was thrilled because, to me, she was a person blessed with extraordinary charisma and great elegance, both in her personality and her style.” Click through to see all the eye-catching sparklers that will stay on your mind long after the film leaves theaters.

Couture-Level Flow: Our 10 Favorite Fashion Namechecks in Hip Hop and Beyond

By Justin Fenner

Jay-Z‘s newest album Magna Carta Holy Grail, which makes its retail debut on Tuesday, has no shortage of fashion mentions on its tracks. But it also includes an entire song dedicated to one of the rapper’s favorite designers, Tom Ford. (He’s wearing a suit by the designer in the photo above.)

“I am completely flattered,” Ford said in an interview with Billboard. “I mean, come on, who would not want a Jay-Z song named after them?”

And while namechecking a brand isn’t a new trick for a musician, dedicating an entire song to a designer doesn’t happen every day. So in honor of Jay-Z’s epic tribute to Ford, we’re taking a look back at some of our favorite fashion allusions in modern music. …read more

Will Mulberry Get Two New Creative Directors?

Who Will Take Home the Woolmark Prize?

By Randy Miller

The US Woolmark Prize finalists are in, and calling it a crowded field would be a bit of an understatement! The award, which promotes awareness of Merino wool fiber and contributes $100,000 towards winning designers’ collections, has gone to past notable winners including Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. Though we can’t say for sure whether design stars like Bibhu Mohapatra, Wes Gordon, Joseph Altuzarra (all pictured above) will join the ranks of Lagerfeld and Saint Laurent, the prize (which will be determined on July 9) certainly puts them on the right track!

The recipient will compete against finalists from Australia, China, India, and Europe in Milan next year for the International Woolmark Prize, another $100,000, and the chance to have their label carried in Harvey Nichols, 10 Corso Como, Joyce, Eickhoff, and David Jones! With Creatures of the Wind, Daniel Vosovic, Giulietta, Ohne Titel, Timo Weiland, Tucker, and WHIT rounding out the field, America has a stellar chance of taking home the ultimate prize!

By Justin Fenner

Another day, another designer-critic feud playing out online. Last week, Jean Paul Gaultier posted an open letter on his Twitter account, responding to Tim Blanks’s review of his Fall 2013 Couture show. Coco Rocha's Geekiest Modeling Job: Google Glass

By Randy Miller

Could Coco Rocha be the new face of “geek chic?” The self-proclaimed “gadget junkie” gave Google Glass a whirl while on assignment as contributing writer for PC Magazine. After spending an hour with the prototype and shooting an adorably enthusiastic video (above), the model added another suggestion for wearable tech (contact lenses!) and compared the sensation of wearing Google Glass to “sort of like the Wright brothers’ flying machine – that we still have a way to go before we get to something more like a Lear jet.”

Of course, the true commentary came in the form of a fashion roundup. Coco, who admitted to feeling “self-conscious” in the frames (not a good sign for us mere mortals!), suggested a partnership with “established eyewear designers such as Tom Ford or Ray-Ban to create something truly aesthetically pleasing that people would want to wear.” After her Spring 2013 runway show, might we also suggest DVF throw her name into the ring!

Superstars: Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy Become First Duo to Win FGI's Biggest Award

By Justin Fenner

Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy have accomplished a lot in their 30 years working together, but they’ll make industry history this fall when they win the Fashion Group International’s Superstar Award.

It’ll be the first time the trophy has been given to a duo instead of an individual designer. Jacobs and Duffy will be in good company: Donatella Versace, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Nicolas Ghesquiere have won the award in the past.

So why recognize both men? FGI president Margaret Hays called the duo “a partnership that changed the course of fashion design.” She told WWD, “The enduring collaboration of Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy is the foundation for one of the most influential and successful brands on the planet.”

Jacobs has credited working with Duffy – who has been his business partner almost since the beginning of his design career – as the reason he’s had so much success.

“We always stood by each other,” Jacobs said in a WSJ Magazine profile in 2011. “It’s not about what I do and what Robert does. The two of us together are Marc Jacobs. The two of us together are Vuitton. I don’t think without him or without me we could achieve all that we’ve achieved.”

Kanye's Latest Production: An A.P.C. Collaboration

By Randy Miller

North West isn’t Kanye’s only labor of love this summer – A.P.C. and the fashion-forward rapper have just announced a collaboration set to hit stores on July 14. The Parisian label confirmed the news on Instagram this weekend. The matchup will add a seemingly denim-centric line to Kanye’s forays into fashion, which already includes those $1,625 Giuseppe Zanotti heels.

Placing his name on a notable list that includes Chloe Sevigny, Kate Moss, and of course, Lindsay Lohan, Kanye is just the latest celebrity to tick off the “designer” box on his resume. If Yeezus is any indication, this capsule collection is sure to be a hit.
