Can Juicy Couture's Founders Take Their Brand Back? 5 Designers Who Did it Right

By Justin Fenner

You can take the girl out of the velour tracksuit, but apparently you can’t take the tracksuit out of the girl. Rumor has it that the founders of Juicy Couture, Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor, are trying to buy the brand back from its current owners. It’s been 10 years since they sold it to Liz Claiborne – now called Fifth and Pacific Co. – but according to financial statements obtained by WWD, the two designers are working with private equity firms on a plan to bring the label back under their control.

If they do make a successful return to the brand, Skaist-Levy and Nash-Taylor would have a very busy schedule: they started another line, called Skaist-Taylor, just last year. But it certainly wouldn’t be the first time a designer came back to a brand they loved after spending time on other projects. A look at five designers who made their own comebacks work, here. …read more

Is There Anything Mara Hoffman Can't Print?

By Randy Miller

Swimwear designer Mara Hoffman is dipping her toes into fresh waters when she shows at Miami Swim Week, which kicks off July 18. For the first time, the print-loving label will walk with a Mercedes-Benz Presents title to go along with the bright bikinis and tanned torsos that are sure to appear throughout the collection.

The honor, which is awarded to one designer each season, has gone to such beachy brands as Vitamin A, Trina Turk, and Lisa Vogel. Of the decision to add Mara Hoffman to the illustrious list, Stephanie Zimmer of Mercedes-Benz USA said: “We are honored to welcome her . . . Mara’s unique prints are unmistakable and evoke a very spirited, playful attitude like our Cabriolet.”

That car will debut in South Beach with a paint finish mirroring a print from Hoffman’s runway collection. The one-of-a-kind textile will also pop up at Miami’s Alchemist boutique, which will sell a unique fashion item designed exclusively by Hoffman – should a printed Mercedes be out of your budget.

A Denim Designer Reveals the Biggest Mistake You Can Make Buying Jeans

By Justin Fenner

David Koral only started his eponymous jeans line Koral Denim a year ago, but he already had a lifetime of industry experience before he launched the brand.

For Koral, denim is a family business. His father, Peter Koral, founded the much-loved jeans brand 7 For All Mankind in 2000, and now he’s working with David on the new venture.

“To say the least, it’s an interesting relationship,” the younger Koral told us in an interview. “If you could imagine, father and son working together in the same office.”

Zuhair Murad Spills on Kristen Stewart's Red Carpet Dressing Philosophy

By Leah Melby

Zuhair Murad’s gorgeous couture creations have been on our radar for awhile now, but then Kristen Stewart attended his recent Paris show in a sheer-legged pantsuit and everything changed. The actress is the latest in his stable of famous fans, with Jennifer Lopez already a huge supporter. Enamored with both his gowns and experience working with bold names, we connected with him to get the inside scoop.

On working with Kristen Stewart: “We first worked with Kristen for the premiere of her movie On the Road when she wore one of my favorite looks from the Fall 2012 couture collection. There’s something very unique about her – her attitude is so raw and unassuming, which contrasts with her timeless and classic beauty. We’ve since dressed her for various events, and when I found out she would be attending the show I was thrilled! This season was based on the idea of light within darkness, which is very definitive of her style. She’s always gravitated toward a chic yet daring look and loves pieces that show a little bit of skin but in an unexpected way. When I saw her in the sheer lace jumpsuit, she looked flawless.”

Read on to see what it’s like working with Jennifer Lopez. …read more

Would You Wed in a Shirtdress? Viktor & Rolf's Bridal Capsule Makes It Possible

By Justin Fenner

Viktor & Rolf, the Dutch guardian of avant garde and experimental fashion, has added a standalone bridal collection to its Resort 2014 offering. It’s called, quite simply, Marriage, and it features six styles that aren’t geared toward traditional brides.

There is, for example, a silk crepe de chine shirtdress whose tail becomes a floor-length train, and a sleeveless jumpsuit with an open back. The other dresses also feature unconventional details, like tiers of irregular pleating. The designers even subverted bows, using them to fill up the back of one of the gowns in this collection.

“We’ve always loved designing bridal wear because a wedding dress is a garment with a lot of meaning and emotions attached to it,” the designers told Vogue UK. “The wedding dress is the ultimate clothing icon.”

A look at their take on this iconic piece, here in the gallery.

Welcome to the Neighborhood, Maiyet

By Randy Miller

There’s a new kid on the block – if your block happens to be Crosby Street. Beloved artisanal brand Maiyet has opened its first stand-alone boutique in New York’s shop-centric SoHo neighborhood. Mixing oak floors with black steel, the 2,500-square-foot store is a bold and modern addition to the storied neighborhood. Designed by the Paris-based architecture studio Ciguë, the aesthetic is a tribute to the principles loyal fans have come to know and love about the brand.

“In the Maiyet spirit, the store is a special ode to modern, minimal luxury, and artisanal handiwork throughout the details,” said the label’s cofounder, creative director, and president Kristy Caylor. By the looks of this boutique, let’s hope it’s just the first of many! …read more

79 Fabulous Snaps of Giorgio Armani in Honor of His Birthday

By Christina Perez

“I love things that age well – things that don’t date, that stand the test of time, and that become living examples of the absolute best,” Giorgio Armani has said. At age 79, with his trim figure, tanned skin, and jet-set lifestyle, the visionary designer seems to embody that philosophy.

Whether aboard his $60 million yacht, entertaining friends at one of his nine homes, or kicking back on his private island in the Ionian Sea, Armani knows a thing or two about maintaining the good life – and he should. His business has grown by leaps and bounds since he launched it in 1975. The designer made just $14,000 his first year in business, but by 2012, the Armani empire – which includes everything from clothing to hotels – was worth an estimated $7.2 billion.

In honor of his birthday, here are 79 fabulous snaps that are almost as fabulous as Armani himself.

London Fashion Week Reorganizes Schedule For Spring 2014

By Justin Fenner

London Fashion Week may start on Friday the 13th, but we don’t think any of the designers showing there this season will have bad luck. The schedule for London’s Spring 2014 collections has been reorganized to spread famous designers throughout the week, making it easier for visiting editors and buyers to see brands big and small alike.

For example, Mulberry and Vivienne Westwood will stage their shows on Sunday, Sept. 15 – the same day that relative newcomer Emilia Wickstead is set to show. On Monday, Sept. 16, Tom Ford and Burberry are on the schedule alongside Michael van der Ham and shoe designer Sophia Webster.

The British Fashion Council has published an official schedule, but you can take a look at the shows from London Fashion Week we’re most excited about here. …read more

Get Your Net-A-Porter by Seaplane This Weekend

By Leah Melby

If you’ve spent countless weekends at a Hamptons estate, wishing you could snap your fingers and have a new designer bag or dress appear automatically, well, you’re in luck. While it’ll still involve your credit card, Net-A-Porter is ensuring Hamptonites will never have another fashion emergency with the announcement that starting today, they’ll offer same-day delivery to nine beachy hamlets, including Sagaponack, Montauk, and Sag Harbor. The magic comes courtesy of StndAIR (the seaplane used by tony hotel The Standard) and costs $25, with orders needing to be placed by 10 a.m. to get in your hands later that afternoon. At the same price as regular express delivery, it’s starting to feel practically practical.

See the items we’d want in our first delivery.

Because it’s not a rare thing for us to arrive on a beach vacation and immediately wish we’d brought a different bikini, this Lisa Marie Fernandez suit ($300) is bold but a guaranteed good fit thanks to its neoprene construction.

Whether you forgot to pack your party shoes or are simply bored by the pair you brought, Net-A-Porter’s new service makes a switch easy. We love Christian Louboutin’s bright platforms ($1,095) for a Summer shindig.

Need a beach bag refresher mid-weekend? We’d click through and purchase this buttery soft Bottega Veneta tote ($4,050) for fashionable schlepping of our sunscreen, magazine stash, and more.

Remember These Names: the 2013 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists

By Randy Miller

Just call them the class of 2013! For the 10th annual year, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund has named 10 deserving finalists, and this year’s crop is a good one. Selected by a committee that includes Neiman Marcus‘s Ken Downing, Reed Krakoff, J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons, and Rag & Bone’s David Neville and Marcus Wainwright (past finalists who hosted the announcement in their New York studio), the labels will be observed and interviewed over the next few weeks, create a special design for Uniqlo (set to be unveiled in October), and participate in an LA fashion show later this year. The list of finalists is filled with familiar names and fresh faces alike:

  • Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard of Veronica Beard
  • Misha Nonoo of Nonoo
  • Juan Carlos Obando
  • Dao-Yi Chow & Maxwell Osborne of Public School
  • Marc Alary of Marc Alary Jewelry
  • Tim Coppens
  • Todd Snyder
  • Shimon Ovadia and Ariel Ovadia of Ovadia & Sons
  • Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin of Tome
  • Commodore Jason Jones of Parabellum

“To my mind simply mentioning the likes of such previous winners as Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, Rodarte, and Joseph Altuzarra more than demonstrates just how much the fund has brought to American fashion. This year’s 10 finalists are going to be following in some pretty illustrious footsteps,” said Anna Wintour, who was on hand for the announcement. With so many fashion powerhouses in the past, we can’t wait to see which of this year’s finalists we can one day add to Wintour’s list!
