The XJR returns! Jaguar has announced it will release an XJR sedan for 2014, and that the sporty model will debut at the 2013 New York auto show. Recently, Jaguar gave the XJ a mild refresh for 2013, but it hasn’t sold an R version of its biggest sedan since 2009, the year before the new-look, current-generation model bowed.
Unlike Jaguar’s other R models, the 510-hp XFR and the XKR, the XJR will be powered by a 550-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine shared with the higher-output XFR-S and XKR-S. It also will receive the requisite host of chassis and suspension enhancements to improve handling and braking. As is clear from the single XJR photo Jaguar released, the car also will get subtle cosmetic upgrades to visually announce its R-itude. The XJR likely will slot into the XJ lineup above the 510-hp XJ Supersport and XJL Supersport, which until now has been the spiciest XJ on offer.
Look for more details—like whether the XJR will be offered only in short-wheelbase, non-L form—to follow the XJR’s debut in New York. A part of us really hopes Jaguar decides to take the XJR one step further and roll out an even more-powerful (and French Racing Blue) XJR-S.

Driving the new 2013 Jaguar XFR is like wrapping up all trim levels of the prided XF mid-sized luxury sports sedan into one package – but giving it a broader expression in its expanded performance-oriented aptitude. The driving dynamics are plenty capable to take on direct competition on the road or track. The rear wheels easily break loose while traction control minimally intrudes. The growling exhaust note under mid to full throttle is intoxicating. Braking comes on strong with no noticeable fade. The rear end easily kicks out where the XFR can have an abundance of oversteer if you purposely disable stability and traction control. In a way, the XFR is an absolute handful and some when pushing it near the limit on the confines of public roads. To some this is a good thing, to others, well, they should just leave the driving nannies on.
Directing its 510 horsepower to the rear wheels through a well-adapted 8-speed automatic transmission is a seamless mission for the mechanics of this Jaguar. The transmission provides quick up and down shifts in both normal and dynamic modes. In Dynamic mode, the transmission shift patterns are only slightly remapped while the active dampers firm up to keep the body motion to a minimum.
