Will Cinnamon be the default desktop in Fedora Linux 19?

It was just last week that Fedora Linux 18 “Spherical Cow” made its official debut, but since then the Red Hat-supported distribution has been all over the news for a variety of reasons, not all of them complimentary.

First came the news that the Fedora Linux project is considering ousting the MySQL database management system (DBMS).

“We would like to replace MySQL with MariaDB in the early development cycle for Fedora 19,” wrote developer Jaroslav Reznik in a message on the developer e-mail list.

Since changes in Fedora often show up later in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), such a change could have big ramifications down the road, particularly for businesses.

Install ROSA Launcher on Fedora 18 KDE

SimpleWelcome is the default menu on ROSA Linux KDE. Like the Takeoff Launcher, it is a fullscreen menu, but with a few more features.

This article shows how to install and use it in place of the Kickoff Menu, the default menu style on Fedora 18 KDE (Spherical Cow).

The package is already in the repository, so you do not have to do anything special. Just install it from the command line or via Apper, the graphical package manager on Fedora. From the command line, typing yum install rosa-launcher will install it. Searching for “rosa” in Apper will also help you to install it.

Installing it is the first step. The next step is to add the widget to the panel. To do that, right-click on the panel and select Panel Options > Add Widgets.

Typing “simple” in the search field should bring up SimpleWelcome in the search result. Double-click it to add it to the panel. If you like your new menu, you may now remove the Kickoff menu from the panel.

This is SimpleWelcome’s Welcome tab. By default, the Recent Applications section is empty, but it will be gradually populated as you launch and use applications.

Five Notable New Features in Fedora Linux 18 'Spherical Cow'

After numerous delays along the way, the final version of Fedora Linux 18 “Spherical Cow” made its long-awaited debut on Tuesday.

Late last year I wrote about a few of the interesting features that had appeared in the beta version of the software, but now this finished release brings quite a bit more to the table.

As the free, community version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Fedora is nothing if not a leading-edge distribution, and it tends to offer a sneak preview of what’s to come in RHEL and beyond. Currently in the No. 4 spot for page-hit rankings on DistroWatch, it’s particularly well-known for its business-focused features.
