Calif. woman reunited with boys snatched in Mexico

A California woman has been reunited with her two sons who were kidnapped and held for ransom in Mexico since 2011.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/Xr68xV ) the boys were abducted by a couple who told Sarani Hernandez, of Watsonville, they would bring her 9- and 11-year-old boys back from Mexico.

Hernandez had left them there with her mother.

But police and U.S. Justice Department officials say the couple instead kidnapped the boys and extorted thousands of dollars from Hernandez.

Hernandez was concerned about being deported but came forward last year to report the abduction. The FBI and Mexican police found the boys in December.

The couple, Jesus Salinas and Patricia Delatorre, have been arrested. A third suspect has not been found.

Authorities seize 36 Chihuahuas at 2 Calif. homes

California officials are searching for new homes for three dozen Chihuahuas that were seized from two residences.

Officials with the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter say they removed 11 Chihuahuas, including six puppies, at a Watsonville apartment on Monday. Then they found 25 more, including 10 puppies, at a relative’s house in the same town.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel (http://bit.ly/16fkp7h ) reports the Chihuahuas are being housed at two shelter locations before they head to foster homes. But the shelter is looking for people who can adopt the dogs permanently.

Officials say the dogs were being hoarded in the homes and were allowed to breed indiscriminately.

Authorities are investigating to determine whether animal neglect charges should be filed.

The investigation began when the landlord of the apartment complex reported the Chihuahuas.
