Turkish prime minister to visit Gaza in May

Turkey‘s prime minister says he plans to visit the Gaza Strip in May after a trip to Washington.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has long expressed his wish to visit Gaza, said Saturday the visit will likely take place “toward the end of May” after a planned meeting with President Barack Obama in the U.S. capital on May 16.

Last month, Obama helped broker reconciliation between Turkey and Israel, following the breakdown in ties after a 2010 Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that killed eight Turks and a Turkish-American.

Erdogan has canceled previous plans to visit the Hamas-controlled region reportedly over U.S. concerns.

Kerry in Turkey, eyes new bid for talks in Mideast

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Turkey early Sunday on the first leg of a 10-day trip to Europe and Asia that would also seek to unlock long-stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Kerry was expected to encourage Turkish leaders to continue improving ties with Israel. The two countries were once allies, but relations spiraled downward after Israel‘s 2010 raid on a Turkish flotilla bound for the Gaza Strip. Eight Turks and one Turkish-American died.

Hopes for rapprochement improved after Obama brokered a telephone conversation between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkey‘s prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while President Barack Obama was in Israel last month.

Kerry also will coordinate with Erdogan and other Turkish officials on efforts to halt the violence in neighboring Syria.

Kerry planned to fly from Turkey to Jerusalem for meetings with the presidents and prime ministers of both Israel and the Palestinians. He had accompanied Obama there and made a solo trip to Israel shortly after.

Though expectations are low for any breakthrough on Kerry’s trip, his diplomacy represents some of the Obama administration’s most sustained efforts for ending more than six decades of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

Kerry probably will seek confidence-building measures between the two sides. Negotiators and observers see little chance right now for immediate progress on the big stumbling blocks toward a two-state peace agreement.

Kerry will also visit Britain and then South Korea, China and Japan, where talks will focus on North Korea‘s nuclear program and escalating threats against the U.S. and its allies.

He is scheduled to return to Washington on April 15.

Erdogan: No quick restoration of ties with Israel

Turkey’s prime minister suggests relations with Israel will “normalize” only after the victims of a deadly raid of Gaza-bound flotilla are compensated and the Gaza blockade remains eased.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s comments Sunday came days after the Israeli prime minister apologized for the 2010 raid that killed eight Turks and one Turkish-American. Erdogan accepted the apology and both leaders said they would begin the work of restoring full relations.

But Erdogan says: “We have said: ‘an apology will be made, compensation will be paid and the blockade on Palestine will be lifted. There will be no normalization without these.”

He says, “normalization will happen the moment there is an implementation.”

Israel has said an easing of restrictions on civilian goods into the Palestinian territories will continue as long as calm prevails.

Assad supporters appear to hack BBC Twitter account

Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad appear to have hijacked the Twitter account for the BBC‘s weather service.

The hackers identified themselves as members of the Syrian Electronic Army, a group that has carried out a string of web attacks against targets such as Al-Jazeera, which it sees as sympathetic to Syria‘s rebels.

A series of messages posted by the BBC Weather Twitter account on Thursday ranged from political to anti-Semitic to comical. One read “Long Live Syria Al-Assad,” while another said: “Saudi weather station down due to head on-collision with camel.”

A further message claimed Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered terrorists to launch chemical weapons at civilian areas in North Syria.

The BBC says the Twitter account is one of its own and that it is investigati

Turkish PM: Syrian leader 'mute devil'

Turkey’s prime minister is urging the world to speak out about atrocities by Syria‘s leader, whom he called a “mute devil” for carrying out attacks on his own people but not standing up to Israel.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan received applause Sunday at a government communications forum in the United Arab Emirates, which has joined other Gulf nations in backing Syrian rebels seeking to topple President Bashar Assad.

Erdogan urged world leaders to denounce attacks on civilians by the Syrian regime. He described Assad as a “mute devil” for exercising brutality against Syrians while not pressing harder to challenge Israel over its occupation of the Golan Heights.

Israel captured the strategic plateau in 1967. Despite hostility between the two countries, Israel and Syria have not gone to war since 1973.

Turkey says France must solve Kurdish killings

Turkey‘s prime minister has called on France to immediately shed light on the slayings of three Kurdish rebel activists in Paris.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday also criticized French President Francois Hollande — who has said he knew one of the women — saying he should explain “to the world” why he had met with “terrorists” wanted by Turkey.

The three, including the founding member of the autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebel group, the PKK, were found shot dead on Thursday at a time when their jailed leader is holding peace talks with Turkey.

Turkey and its allies have labeled the group a terrorist organization. But Turkey frequently accuses France and other European nations of failing to cooperate against the rebel group.

Turkey calls on Kurdish rebels to withdraw

Turkey‘s prime minister has called on Kurdish rebels to withdraw forces from Turkish territory and disarm.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s appeal Wednesday comes as Turkish officials are holding talks with jailed rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan with the goal of convincing the group to disarm and end a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.

Officials have not disclosed details on the talks, but news reports have claimed that the terms of a deal being negotiated include the declaration of a truce, followed by the rebels’ withdrawal from Turkey and the group’s disarmament.

Erdogan’s comments at a news conference during a visit to Niger were broadcast live on Turkish television stations.

The rebels are fighting for self-rule for Kurds in southeast Turkey.
