Protesters march against first British drone base
Anti-war protesters are demonstrating outside a Royal Air Force base used to control drone flights over Afghanistan.
Until this week, British drones were operated only from a U.S. Air Force base in Nevada.
The Ministry of Defense announced Thursday that a new drone-operating squadron had begun operating from RAF Waddington in eastern England.
The ministry says the Reaper drones are used for “intelligence and surveillance missions,” but also are equipped with missiles and bombs.
Opponents who are marching Saturday say drones make it too easy to launch deadly attacks from a distance and out of public sight.
The defense ministry says drone operators “adhere strictly to the same laws of armed conflict and are bound by the same clearly defined rules of engagement” as other RAF pilots.

Encouraging Phase 1 data with lead compound, ARQ 092, to be presented at AACR
WOBURN, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ArQule, Inc. (NAS: ARQL) today announced it has regained worldwide rights for the development and commercialization of compounds covered under its AKT collaboration with Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd., including the lead compound emerging from this collaboration, ARQ 092. Data from an ongoing Phase 1 trial with ARQ 092 will be presented at the AACR (American Association for Cancer Research) Annual Meeting on April 9, 2013.
“Regaining worldwide rights to the AKT program, including the novel oral agent, ARQ 092, adds significant value for ArQule, as it expands our proprietary pipeline in an exciting area of therapeutic development,” said Brian Schwartz, M.D., chief medical officer of ArQule. “AKT, also known as the serine/threonine kinase PKB, is believed to mediate a number of signal transduction processes and represents a potential therapeutic target for several cancers and other diseases. We look forward to the AACR data presentation from the ongoing Phase 1 trial with ARQ 092.”
ARQ 092 is a selective AKT inhibitor that was discovered through technology from the ArQule Kinase Inhibitor Platform (AKIP™) and optimized through a structure-based drug design methodology. The AKT signaling pathway, which plays a role in regulating cell growth, survival, migration and angiogenesis, is frequently dysregulated in cancer.
ArQule is regaining its rights to the AKT program and to ARQ 092 pursuant to Daiichi Sankyo‘s decision to terminate a license and co-commercialization agreement with ArQule dated November 8, 2011.

UK investigating allegations of RAF sexual abuse
Britain’s defense ministry says it is investigating allegations of sexual abuse of children at a former Royal Air Force base in Berlin.
The ministry said Friday the alleged offenses, which occurred between 1981 and 1989, involve a former RAF serviceman who was stationed in Berlin at the time and are being investigated by the RAF Police Special Investigations and Intelligence Branch.
Wing Commander Mike Dixon, who is overseeing the investigation, said in a statement that a man in his early 60s from the London area has been interviewed by RAF police.
The defense ministry urged individuals to come forward who served at, or had connections with, the ex-RAF base at Gatow during the 1980s and 1990s and might have information relating to the alleged offenses.
RAF Northolt Past And Future
By Matthew Stibbe, Contributor RAF Northolt began operations in 1915, predating the formation of the RAF and it has the longest history of continuous operations of any RAF airfield. During WWII, it was home to a Polish wing, including No 303 (Polish) Squadron, which clocked up the highest allied scores during the Battle of Britain. The Polish association is still maintained and celebrated with a Polish war memorial, a small museum, veterans’ dinners and regular exchanges with Polish units. The airfield has also been the backdrop for Bond films such as Goldfinger, Thunderball and Octopussy.
