Pennsylvania American Water Announces $16.5 Million Investment to Construct and Rehab Water Storage Tanks

HERSHEY, Pa.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pennsylvania American Water unveiled today its 2013 construction schedule to build nine new water storage tanks, as well as rehabilitate 14 existing tanks throughout the commonwealth. The new tank construction will provide increased storage capacity to meet customer demand and improve fire protection, while the company’s rehab program of inspecting, sandblasting and repainting the existing tanks will extend their service life and protect water quality.

The estimated cost of the new tank construction is $11.5 million, and the rehab projects total approximately $5 million for a combined capital investment of nearly $16.5 million.

“Storage tanks are a critical component of our water infrastructure, because they ensure that adequate, reliable water supplies are always available for the communities we serve,” said President Kathy L. Pape of Pennsylvania American Water, noting that the company currently owns and maintains more than 275 storage structures. “The new tanks we’re building are necessary to meet customer demands for reliable water service and fire protection.”

New tank construction is planned in the following communities:

  • North Annville Township, Lebanon County – 750,000-gallon concrete tank, scheduled for completion by fall. Estimated cost $1.4 million
  • Susquehanna Depot Borough, Susquehanna County – 680,000-gallon concrete tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated cost $2.5 million
  • Pittston Township, Luzerne County – 1,000,000-gallon steel tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated cost $1.35 million
  • Newton Township, Lackawanna County – 400,000-gallon elevated steel tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated Cost $1.6 million.
  • Kane Borough, McKeon County – 600,000-gallon elevated steel tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated cost $1.7 million
  • Delaware Township (Hickory), Pike County – 100,000-gallon steel tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated cost $490,000
  • Delaware Township (Silver), Pike County – 135,000-gallon steel tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated cost $500,000
  • East Buffalo Township, Union County – 500,000-gallon elevated steel tank, scheduled for completion by year end. Estimated cost $ 1.75 million.
  • Ellwood City, Lawrence County – 200,000-gallon standpipe to supplement existing tank, …read more

Body found at base of waterfalls in Pennsylvania

Police say the body of a New Jersey woman was found at the base of some waterfalls in northeastern Pennsylvania and the death is suspicious.

Pennsylvania State Police say the body of 56-year-old Wayne, N.J., resident Gail Dews was recovered at the base of the gorge at Shohola Falls in Pike County on Monday morning. A police spokeswoman, Officer Connie Devens, says the death is being considered suspicious and police don’t know how Dews died.

The Pocono Record reports Dews’ husband had reported her missing and police had been searching for her as part of a daylong effort. Devens says family members are being interviewed as part of the investigation.

Authorities say recovering the body from the gorge was difficult because of shade, loose rocks, ice and moss.

Coroner: 2 adults, 5 children killed in Ky. fire

A fire that roared through a ranch-style home in rural, southeastern Kentucky has killed two adults and five children, authorities said.

The identities of the victims were withheld while relatives were being notified following Saturday’s fire. Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins said autopsies were planned in Frankfort, likely on Tuesday.

Blevins said the adult victims found inside the home were a woman and her boyfriend. The woman was the mother of three of the children who died, while two other children were from another family, he said Saturday afternoon.

Blevins and Kentucky State Police said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Arson investigators went to the scene, but officials said no foul play was suspected.

Knox County is in a coal field region of the state. The fire broke out in the community of Gray, located about halfway between Lexington, Ky., and Knoxville, Tenn.

Troopers said someone called 911 at 9:57 a.m. Saturday. Witnesses reported flames shooting from windows and dense smoke. Firefighters stayed on the scene until the fire was out at 1 p.m., the house gutted and smoldering.

On Jan. 9, four children and their father died in an early morning blaze in Jonancy, in Pike County in the Appalachian region of the state — about 2 1/2 hours east of Gray. The mother of those children survived with serious burns. The family had been sleeping near an electric space heater when the fire began, and the space heater likely started the fire, officials said.
