Money Talks: Comparing Salary Information Takes Co-Workers Out of their Comfort Zone

European Respondents far More Comfortable Discussing Salary than their US Counterparts

MAYNARD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– A global poll conducted by Monster reveals that more than half of those surveyed globally are not comfortable discussing salary with their colleagues. The poll also found that there were big differences between regions with only 25% of US respondents being comfortable discussing what they earn, compared with 43% of European respondents.

“Pay transparency is a hot topic, especially among startups. But it’s clear that many workers are just as uncomfortable with the notion as their bosses are,” said Mary Ellen Slayter, Career Advice Expert for Monster.com. “For most people, the best strategy is to focus on yourself and your own career path and growth, instead of trying to compete with everybody else. Of course, the best time to discuss salary is when you’re negotiating a raise.”

Monster, the worldwide leader in successfully connecting people to job opportunities and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYS: MWW) asked visitors to their site the question, “In your current or most recent job, how comfortable were you discussing what you earn with your colleagues (e.g., salary, vacation, sick time, bonuses, etc)?” and received over 3,000 responses. International findings included:

  • Very comfortable – 18%
  • Often comfortable – 14%
  • Somewhat comfortable – 13%
  • Seldom comfortable – 20%
  • Never comfortable – 35%

Respondents by country vary significantly when asked if they were comfortable discussing what they earn with other employees. 63% of US respondents answered they were not comfortable, whereas, only 36% from Germany felt that way. The breakdown of Monster’s top markets is as follows:

(NYS: MWW) announced this week that the company’s 6Sense® semantic search technology, which is the technology behind Power Resume Search™, is now available in the Netherlands. Recruiters in seven countries can now quickly and precisely find and target candidates who best meet their hiring needs.

Monster’s team in the Netherlands worked on the 6Sense knowledge base for over two years prior to launch. 48 clients from different sectors participated in the beta phase, which lasted over 8 months, and conducted over 37,000 searches to test and give feedback. This feedback was then incorporated into the knowledge base before the product launched this month.

“With the size of resume databases growing from thousands to tens of millions, 6Sense is the perfect answer to the challenges businesses face when seeking new employees,” Mark Conway, Chief Information Officer, Monster Worldwide. “A top priority for companies around the world is to quickly and accurately fill openings and Monster’s technology uniquely addresses that need. For job seekers, 6Sense powered search delivers relevant job search results, precisely matching people with opportunities better than ever before.”

In side-by-side comparisons with competitive sites using standard keyword search technology, 97 percent of recruiters in the U.S. reported they found qualified candidates faster when using Monster’s 6Sense search technology.

Monster’s 6Sense semantic search technology enables employers to find the best candidates significantly quicker by analyzing resumes as a hiring manager would. Through Power Resume Search, resumes are read and skills evaluated to provide understanding of an individual’s experience in seconds instead of hours. Semantic search technology goes far beyond traditional keyword search, saving time and increasing productivity, allowing recruiters to see relevant resumes in less time creating unprecedented hiring efficiency by providing faster access to better qualified candidates.

Developed through Monster’s 2008 acquisition of search leader Trovix Inc., Monster’s 6Sense patented semantic search technology utilizes intuitive, concept based searching, with a human-like understanding of the recruiting process and hiring needs. The 6Sense precision matching technology understands job titles, skills, experience level, industries, education and the hierarchy of concepts, evaluating a candidate’s work experience like a recruiter would in a …read more

New Report Features Recommendations for Employers on How to Hire and Retain Military Veterans

MAYNARD, Mass. & WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Monster.com, the worldwide leader in successfully connecting people to job opportunities, and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYS: MWW) , and Military.com, the nation’s largest military and veteran membership organization, today released a report summarizing the top-line recommendations and discussions following the first National Veteran Employment Summit held in December 2012. The Summit brought together senior human resource professionals, military and government officials, academic leaders and military veterans to address the best practices for preparing, supporting, and connecting veterans to the organizations that want to hire them.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-W. Va), an active member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, praised organizations that focus on hiring veterans and stated, “Today’s veteran’s make great hires, and I’ve always said, if you want to help a vet, hire a vet.”

The report highlights that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for every organization looking to implement a veteran hiring program.

Recommendations from the conference include:

  • Learn from the best. Look to the targeted veteran hiring initiatives like those at Boeing, JP Morgan and the Department of Veterans Affairs and emulate their best practices.
  • Take advantage of the tools. From military skill translators to workshops and seminars, there are numerous tools for organizations to use as they implement and grow their veteran hiring program.
  • Build Veteran Affinity and Mentoring Programs. Make use of the veterans you have in-house. Employed military veterans can help support an organization’s veterans’ hiring initiatives, educate their peers, and serve as a resource to in-house recruiters.
