2 St Mary deputies out of critical condition

Louisiana State Police say two St. Mary Parish sheriff’s deputies are out of critical condition, and the man accused of shooting them and killing two other people has been booked with arson and two counts each of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Trooper Stephen Hammons says 48-year-old Wilbert Thibodeaux (TIB-uh-doh) of Charenton (SHEHR-uhn-tuhn) is being held without bond in the Iberia Parish jail.

Hammons says the body of 78-year-old Eddie Lyons of Charenton was found in a mobile home that had been set on fire Saturday before someone told police that an armed man was walking down a street near the Chitimacha (chit-ih-MAH-chuh) tribal casino.

Thibodaux is accused of shooting Lyons, then a tribal police officer and two deputies who answered the report.

Hammons says the officers’ names will be released Monday.

Lawyer seeks to withdraw guilty plea in fraud case

A Rhode Island lawyer who pleaded guilty mid-trial to using the identities of terminally ill patients to illegally obtain millions of dollars from insurance companies and brokerage houses wants to withdraw his plea.

Joseph Caramadre (cah-rah-MAH‘-dray) says he’s seeking to withdraw the guilty plea he entered in November because he’s innocent. He says he entered it hoping the trial’s end would alleviate “serious health issues” it was causing several family members.

A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Caramadre and a former employee pleaded guilty to single counts of wire fraud and conspiracy.

Prosecutors say they took out variable annuities and “death-put” bonds that paid out when a person died. Authorities say they lied to terminally ill people to get personal information used to purchase bonds and annuities in their names without consent.
