UQM Technologies Receives Order to Refresh PowerPhase ® Components in Denver RTD Hybrid Buses

LONGMONT, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– UQM Technologies, Inc. (NYSE MKT: UQM) and the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) announced today that UQM will begin a refurbishment program on the generators and motor controllers used in the agency’s fleet of hybrid buses. The original units being refurbished far exceeded their expected life and this program will allow additional running time for the fleet of buses, which operate seven days a week in downtown Denver.

These 30 hybrid buses have covered more than a million miles in daily service since 2004. The buses use UQM PowerPhase Select® electric generators and controllers as part of the hybrid powertrain.

“This pioneering fleet of hybrid buses was one of the earliest hybrid vehicle programs in the country, and the amount of miles these hybrid systems have traveled over nearly a decade is impressive,” said Eric R. As part of the refresh, each UQM component in the hybrid bus systems will be thoroughly inspected and worn parts replaced, returning the units to near-new condition. Each refurbished unit will then be run through a full set of final testing to ensure that they are ready for many more miles of trouble-free operation. All 30 shuttle buses are expected to be refreshed over the next two years.

UQM is also powering Hino electric city buses, Proterra electric composite transit buses, Electric Vehicles International all-electric medium-duty trucks and Boulder EV delivery vans. UQM has recently expanded its product offerings for full-electric buses and commercial vehicles with the introduction of the PowerPhase HD® 220.

Audi Expands Testing of A1 e-tron with UQM Technologies PowerPhase ® Electric Drive System

  • Audi has logged over 50,000 kilometers in its first phase of testing with the A1 e-tron extended-range electric vehicles

LONGMONT, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– UQM Technologies, Inc. (NYSE MKT: UQM) PowerPhase® systems provide the electric drive in the Audi A1 e-tron extended-range electric vehicles that will undergo additional testing in 2013 in the NPE (National Platform of Electrification) in Germany.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is promoting this program to demonstrate and further develop the viability of electric vehicles. Audi will participate in the regions of Bavaria/Saxony, Berlin-Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg, addressing different focal topics in each area.

“The key attributes of our electric motors and controllers offer the same advantages in extended-range electric vehicles as they do in electric-only applications,” said Eric R. Ridenour, President and Chief Executive Officer of UQM Technologies, Inc. “Our higher efficiency systems provide the potential for longer all-electric mode and an overall improved fuel economy in extended-range vehicles.”

Extended-range vehicles rely on the electric powertrain for propulsion and use an internal combustion engine (ICE) to charge the battery pack. For example, the Audi A1 e-tron extended-range all-electric test-fleet vehicles use UQM PowerPhase Select 125 systems to drive the wheels at all times. The ICE in the car is used to generate electricity to extend the range as needed. The maximum all-electric range of the A1 e-tron is 30 miles (50 km), while the maximum combined range in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is 155 miles (250 km).

In addition to efficiently supplying power to drive extended-range and electric-only vehicles, energy is captured by the PowerPhase system through regenerative braking, returning electricity to the battery pack during deceleration and braking.

UQM offers a number of PowerPhase systems for full-electric and extended-range applications. These include the PowerPhase Select® system used in the A1 e-tron, plus the PowerPhase Pro® 100 and 135, along with the all-new PowerPhase HD® 220 introduced this year for commercial vehicle applications.

LONGMONT, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– UQM Technologies, Inc. (NYSE MKT: UQM) and Proterra, Inc. have reached a long-term supply agreement that expands their business together and continues the role of UQM as the exclusive supplier of electric propulsion systems to the maker of battery-electric buses. Under the new agreement, Proterra will purchase the recently released UQM PowerPhase HD® 220 electric propulsion system.

“We have had a great business relationship with Proterra since the company was founded, supplying over $1 million of electric propulsion systems to them for their battery-electric buses,” said Eric R. Ridenour, UQM Technologies’ President and Chief Executive Officer. “This new three-year agreement will build on that relationship, grow our volume with Proterra and provide an important customer for our newly introduced PowerPhase HD 220 product.”

Shipments to Proterra under the agreement are currently underway.

The Proterra zero-emission all-electric EcoRide BE35 holds 63 passengers (33 seated) and features a lightweight composite body. The UQM PowerPhase HD 220 electric propulsion system powering the bus produces peak torque of 700 N-m and peak power of 220 kW allowing the bus to deliver exceptional energy-efficient performance.

The UQM PowerPhase HD 220 electric propulsion system was designed specifically for commercial vehicle use, offering commercial truck and bus manufacturers an efficient path to adopting electric propulsion technology in their heavy-duty vehicles.

Proterra buses have been, or soon will, be in operation in the following cities: Pomona, CA; San Antonio, TX; Tallahassee, FL; Seneca, SC; Reno, NV; Worcester, MA and Stockton, CA.
