Venezuelan-owned Citgo flies flags half-mast in Texas, Louisiana for Chavez

By Natalia Angulo

Out of respect for President Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan-owned oil refiner Citgo flew its flags half-mast outside its Houston and Lake Charles, La., offices Wednesday.

Citgo told KHOU 11 News earlier Wednesday that it would lower flags, including the American flag, for Chavez. The company said it would release a statement later in the day, but a request for comment by FoxNews.com was not immediately returned.

In Houston, the flags at the refinery were lowered to half-mast as late as this afternoon, and caused a number of people to look twice as they drove by. James Post, an assistant project manager at an engineering and construction firm in Harris County, told FoxNews.com the sight was “jarring” and it was “disappointing.”

U.S. protocol allows for flags to be lowered for foreign dignitaries and Post recognized Citgo’s right to do so as a private company. However, he said upon seeing the American or Texas flag at half-mast, he immediately questioned the person being honored; and said his mind “immediately jumped to the last time we did this in the Houston-area and it was for Neil Armstrong, so, you wonder.”

Meanwhile, Terry Backhaus, a financial adviser in Louisiana, told FoxNews.com the flags at the Citgo refinery in Lake Charles had apparently been raised back by noon. “I think I used a profanity when I saw it this morning, I was disgusted,” Bakhaus said. “I didn’t believe it to be right, not for somebody who wasn’t a true American ally.”

The late Venezuelan president died Tuesday afternoon at the age of 58 after a two-year battle with cancer. Chavez’s funeral will be held Friday in Caracas. The ceremony is expected to draw leaders from all over the world including Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia.

Thousands of Chavez’s supporters filled Caracas’ streets Wednesday to remember the man who dominated their country for 14 years.

But even amid the mass outpouring of grief, questions about the country’s future could not be put off for long, with worries amplified by the government‘s lack of regard for the letter of the constitution, and the military’s eagerness to choose political sides.

Others who bitterly opposed Chavez’s take-no-prisoners brand of socialism said they were sorry about his death, but hopeful it would usher in a less confrontational, more business-friendly era in this major oil-producing country. Under his leadership, the state expropriated key industries, raised taxes on the rich and forced many opponents into exile.

Venezuela and the United States have a complicated relationship — and animosity between Caracas and Washington was rising even in the final hours before Chavez’s death. Vice President Nicolas Maduro claimed “historical enemies” of Venezuela were behind Chavez’s cancer diagnosis.

U.S. officials quickly cast Chavez’s death as an opportunity for America to rebuild a relationship with Venezuela and for the country itself to pursue “meaningful democratic reforms,” with President Obama saying it marked a “new chapter” for the Latin American nation.

An election is expected to be held in 30 days.

Texas man says ex-girlfriend stole his sperm, had his child

A Louisiana man has filed suit against a Houston sperm donation clinic, alleging they gave his sperm to an ex-girlfriend who then had his child.

Layne Hardin said he made the sperm donation at Obstetrical and Gynecological Associates for another woman with whom he has a 12-year-old child, according to a KHOU.com report.

Hardin told the station his ex-girlfriend, Tobie Devall, walked into the clinic and “bluffed” her way into receiving two vials of his sperm. He claims she was in inseminated right after the clinic handed over the vials.

The paternity of the now two-year-old child has since been proven, Hardin’s attorney, Cade Bernsen, told KHOU.com.

Devall’s attorney,Lee Hoffoss, claims Hardin is a “money grubber” who told Devall that she could use his sperm to be inseminated and become pregnant, the station reported.

The doctor in charge of the sperm bank declined to comment to KHOU.com on the story.

Texas man, 21, fatally shoots intruder during home invasion

A 21-year-old Texas man is being credited with protecting his family by shooting one of three men suspected of forcing their way into their home outside of Houston.

Harris County Sheriff‘s deputies tell KHOU.com that the man’s father was pushed to the ground by one of the suspects when he answered the door Thursday night.

When the intruders went to attack the mother, the son ran to retrieve his father’s gun and fatally shot one of the suspects, the report states. The other two suspects reportedly fled the scene.

Police later spotted a vehicle with two men who matched the suspects’ descriptions and took them in for questioning, the station reported.

Neighbors said the son’s actions were justified. No charges are expected to be filed against him, according to the report.

“People can’t go breaking into people’s homes and not expect some sort of consequence,” Harry Moulder told the station.

Tony Zamazal, Texas Student, Says School Won’t Let Him Wear Dress To Senior Prom

By The Huffington Post News Editors

A Texas-based teen is battling his high school after being told he won’t be allowed to wear a dress to his senior prom.

Tony Zamazal, who says he’s been wearing women’s clothing as often as he can in recent months, had hoped to make a formal debut in a dress, heels and a wig at Spring High School‘s end-of-year dance. After asking an assistant principal if he could attend the prom in that attire, he was immediately shot down, KHOU 11 News is reporting.

“He told me it just wasn’t in the dress code. [He said] women wore dresses, and men wore tuxedos,” Zamazal told the news station. He went on to note, “It’s not okay to just tell people, they can’t be the way that they are. It’s not just a choice of the way you look. It’s more of who you are.”

A Texas middle school teacher has been suspended after allegedly lassoing a student during a history lesson on techniques used during cattle drives.

KHOU.com reports that a teacher at Schrade Middle School in Rowlett asked for student volunteers to help demonstrate lasso techniques and “tried to rope” a 13-year-old student.

“[The teacher] was visiting with the students, telling the students about how cowboys would corral maverick steers back into the herd,” Garland Independent School District spokesman Chris Moore told the news station.

The student volunteer allegedly sustained bruises during the incident and police in Rowlett are considering possible criminal charges, according to KHOU.com.

The district tells the station the unidentified teacher feels badly and has agreed not to use the lasso in class again.
