Funeral held for slain 6-month-old Chicago girl

Teddy bears and flowers decorated a church Tuesday as pastors prayed for strength at the funeral of a 6-month-old baby girl killed when a gunman fired at a minivan as she sat on her father’s lap.

“Lord, we pray that you would give (the girl’s family) supernatural strength,” Pastor Monique McCord said at Jonylah Watkinsfuneral with hundreds in attendance at a church in the Woodlawn neighborhood where the shooting occurred.

The girl’s father, 29-year-old Jonathan Watkins, was seriously wounded in the March 11 shooting. Watkins wore a white hooded sweatshirt and bowed his head over the small casket on Tuesday for about 10 minutes. He had nicknamed his daughter Smooch.

The baby’s grandmother, Mary Young, read a poem at the funeral and several religious leaders spoke.

“All of us need to apologize to her for not doing our best to make the world a better place,” Pastor Marshall Hatch said. “She deserved better.”

Earlier Tuesday mourners filed past the baby’s open casket. On Monday a line formed outside a funeral home as members of the public offered condolences to the family. A local funeral home is paying for the services.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Monday investigators will solve the baby’s murder.

Chicago surgeon who tried to save 6-month-old shooting victim: We couldn't stop blood loss

Anger is growing on the South Side after 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins was shot to death near 65th Street and Maryland Ave. Now, doctors recall their desperate attempt to try to save the baby girl, MyFoxChicago.com reported.

Watkins lost so much blood that doctors at Comers Children’s Hospital had to replace it five times. Almost every organ in her body had been injured by the 5 gunshots, the report said.

“She lost 3 liters of blood in the operating room which means we were aggressively replacing and she simply continued to bleed,” Dr. Mark Slidell told the station. The team of surgeons worked around the clock to keep the girl alive, which they did for 12 hours.

The girl’s mother Judy was in the operating room when she passed away at 6 o’clock on Tuesday morning.

“Most organ systems were starting to go into failure,” the doctor said at a press conference.
Jonylah’s father, Jonathan Watkins, is recovering at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from a gunshot wound to his side and buttocks. He was also grazed in the face.

Watkins, who police say is a known gang member with an extensive criminal history, says he was changing the baby’s diaper when someone approached and started shooting. Authorities believe he was the intended target.

So far, no witnesses are cooperating with Chicago police.

Community activist, Andrew Holmes, has been working the streets to help hunt down the killer. He says a lot of questions remain unanswered.

“I really want to know how she sustained 5 injuries,” Holmes says. “No disrespect to family, but for a child to sustain these 5 injuries, and if the child was laying down, the person had to be shooting down inside the van.”

Police: Slain Chicago infant's dad belongs to gang

Authorities said Tuesday that an attack in which a 6-month-old girl was fatally shot and her father was wounded was apparently gang-related, and that they are searching for the gunman and the driver of the getaway van.

Jonylah Watkins was shot five times during the Monday afternoon attack in the South Side neighborhood of Woodlawn. She died Tuesday morning at Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.

Her father, Jonathan Watkins, was in serious but stable condition, recovering at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from wounds to his side, buttocks and face, which was only grazed, police said.

Witnesses said the attacker approached Jonathan Watkins around 1 p.m. while he was standing beside his minivan and changing his daughter’s diaper. She was on the front seat. Her family said Jonylah was shot in the thigh, shoulder, lung, liver and bowels.

Jonathan Watkins belongs to a gang and has a long criminal history, and Monday’s attack appears to have been gang-related, McCarthy said at a Tuesday news conference. He said police weren’t sure yet whether Watkins will decide to cooperate in the investigation.

“No child, certainly not an infant, should be a victim of gang violence,” McCarthy said.

Authorities found surveillance video of the blue van in which they believe the attacker fled. They believe a driver waited in the van during the shooting.

McCarthy said police flooded the neighborhood Monday night to prevent a retaliatory attack over the infant girl’s shooting.

“He was obviously targeted,” McCarthy said of Jonathan Watkins. Police were trying to determine whether a reported Facebook post threatening Watkins actually exists, McCarthy said.

It wasn’t the family’s first brush with Chicago’s gun violence. The girl’s mother, Judy Watkins, was shot in the knee while she was pregnant with Jonylah, according to the woman’s mother, Mary Young.

“There’s too much shooting over there,” Young told reporters Monday. Speaking of her granddaughter, she added, “She’s nothing but 6 months old. How could anybody — what kind of heart?”

Chicago has seen a rise in gun violence — much of it gang-related — and registered at least 500 homicides last year for the first time since …read more
