PRINCETON, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYS: BMY) announced today that 14 abstracts on the Company’s research in liver disease have been accepted for presentation at The International Liver CongressTM 2013, the 48th annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), in Amsterdam, April 24 – 28.

Key presentations include:

  • New Phase 2 data on an investigational triple direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimen of daclatasvir (NS5A replication complex inhibitor), asunaprevir (NS3 protease inhibitor) and BMS-791325 (NS5B non-nucleotide polymerase inhibitor) in patients with hepatitis C (HCV) genotypes 1a and 1b. The regimen is being studied as a potential interferon alfa-, ribavirin- and ritonavir-free treatment option to avoid the tolerability and drug-drug interaction profiles of these medicines. These triple DAA data will be highlighted in the official ILC Press Conference on April 24.
  • An analysis of all available safety data on 1,100 patients who received daclatasvir plus interferon alfa and ribavirin in Phase 2 studies. These data support the ongoing Phase 3 development program for daclatasvir and further studies of daclatasvir as a component of DAA-based HCV treatment regimens.
  • A characterization of ALT flares observed in hepatitis B (HBV) treatment with the investigational interferon Lambda vs. alfa interferon, reflecting differing profiles for the two compounds. Lambda is being developed as a potential alternative for alfa wherever interferon is used in the treatment of either HCV or HBV.

PASADENA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Arrowhead Research Corporation (NAS: ARWR) , a targeted therapeutics company, will host an analyst event today in New York City to discuss ARC-520, its RNAi-based candidate designed to treat chronic hepatitis B virus infection. The company will discuss the program and describe new preclinical data showing that a low dose of ARC-520 induced rapid and deep reductions in viral particles and key viral antigens in a chimpanzee chronically infected with hepatitis B virus. Arrowhead identified a well-tolerated dose of ARC-520 that lead to a 95% reduction in circulating viral DNA, and approximately 90% reductions in hepatitis e-antigen (HBeAg) and s-antigen (HBsAg), which are thought to be important in establishing a functional cure. These data support previous findings in rodent models and may be predictive of a therapeutic dose range to be identified in upcoming clinical trials expected to start in the middle of this year.

“This is the first time I have tested an siRNA therapy that was efficiently delivered to the liver and suppressed HBV infection including serum levels of HBsAg, a marker that is not suppressed effectively using current therapies,” said Dr. Robert Lanford of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute where the study was conducted. “This was a proof-of-concept study with a novel approach for curing HBV infection and this therapy provided highly promising results in a very short trial.”

Arrowhead RNAi Candidate ARC-520 Induces Greater than 90% Reduction in Circulating HBV DNA in Chimpanzee with Chronic Hepatitis B

PASADENA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Arrowhead Research Corporation (NAS: ARWR) , a targeted therapeutics company, today announced that a study of its RNAi-based candidate ARC-520 in a chimpanzee chronically infected with the human hepatitis B virus (HBV) supports findings from rodent models indicating that it can knock down HBV DNA and key viral antigens. Dr. Robert Lanford and his team at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute are conducting the study. The chimpanzee being treated has had chronic HBV for over 30 years, has high viral-titer and antigenemia, and nearly 100% of hepatocytes stain positive for HBV. Studies are ongoing and additional data will be discussed when the company hosts an analyst and investor event on March 25, and at upcoming scientific conferences.
