Washington, D.C.’s Union Station Now Powered by 100 Percent Wind Energy Provided by Washington Gas Energy Services

Historic Landmark Increases Environmental Commitment

WASHINGTON & HERNDON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Strengthening its dedication to environmental sustainability, Union Station in Washington, D.C., has signed a three-year contract for 100 percent WGES CleanSteps® WindPower from Herndon-based Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES). One of the nation’s premier, historic transportation hubs, Union Station previously used 50 percent WGES CleanSteps® WindPower for its electricity needs.

Union Station will transition to 100 percent wind power for its electricity load of 18,943,964 kilowatt hours annually. This is equivalent to avoiding the consumption of more than 1,400,000 gallons of gasoline or taking more than 2,700 cars off the road for one year. The world’s fastest-growing energy resource, wind power displaces conventional power, reduces carbon dioxide and helps eliminate air pollution.

“Reducing our environmental impact is a key priority for Union Station and using renewable wind energy greatly aids us in decreasing our carbon footprint,” said Roy Staeck, vice president of business development for Union Station. “As one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, Union Station‘s switch to wind energy through Washington Gas Energy Services is an important milestone in its history and a great opportunity to inform visitors about wind energy’s viability for businesses of all sizes.”

Union Station is hosting Earth Month 2013, a month-long event throughout April featuring interactive, eco-friendly experiences designed to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage sustainability. Presented by Earth Day Network and the Premier Tourist and Landmark Association, this event will reach the more than 100,000 visitors who travel through Union Station‘s doors each day. As an event sponsor, Washington Gas Energy Services will educate attendees about how they can reduce the environmental impact of their energy use through carbon offsets and wind power.

“With 37,000,000 visitors passing through its doors each year, Union Station sets an example to visitors, commuters and Washington, D.C. residents through its demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Washington Gas Energy Services President, Harry Warren. “As a leading competitive energy supplier, we look forward to continuing to work with Union Station to lower the environmental impact of this landmark through renewable energy.”

The Week In Wingnuts: Mandatory Guns And State Religions

By The Huffington Post News Editors

North Carolina: The Promised Land?

GOP state Reps. Carl Ford and Harry Warren jointly proposed a bill Monday that would allow the state to declare an official religion—effectively nullifying the first amendment. The proposal, backed by 12 other Republicans, was put forth as a responsive to an ACLU lawsuit aimed at blocking commissioners in one North Carolina county from opening meetings with a prayer. Thursday, House Speaker Thom Tillis, who’s reportedly considering a U.S. Senate run, effectively killed the proposal by announcing it would nota receive a vote in the full House.

Washington Gas Energy Services and Sterling Planet Renew Unique Partnership and CleanSteps Carbon Offsets Agreement

Improved Air and Water Quality in Chesapeake Bay Region Continues into Third Year

ATLANTA & HERNDON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES) and Sterling Planet announced today the continuation of their collaboration to improve air and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay region through WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets. The public-private partnership, which also involves the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), is now set to enter its third year.

The WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets product has reduced the carbon footprint of WGES residential and small commercial natural gas customers by matching usage with locally sourced, certified carbon offsets. Unlike other carbon offsets, WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets include an investment in future carbon reduction projects. To support these future initiatives, over $400,000 in combined contributions from WGES and Sterling Planet have already been made to a Carbon Reduction Fund managed by CBF. Since the launch of WGES CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets in September 2010, more than 70,000 carbon offsets have been purchased on behalf of WGES customers — the equivalent of eliminating emissions from using nearly 7,900,000 gallons of gasoline.

“This program has helped the Chesapeake Bay Foundation promote innovative ways to reduce pollution while also mitigating greenhouse gas emissions in the region,” says Beth McGee, senior scientist with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. “For example, as a result of the support from the Carbon Reduction Fund, we are working with farmers to implement a new technology, called the Greenseeker, that helps farmers do a better job of nutrient management, while providing environmental benefits of reduced water and air pollution.”

The new 15-month agreement between WGES and Sterling Planet will build on the success of the existing program. Estimated additional carbon offsets during the term of the contract are 45,000 metric tons, and total contributions to the Carbon Reduction Fund are expected to reach $580,000.

“Together with our valued partners, Sterling Planet and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, we are making an important investment in cleaning the air and water in our region,” said Harry Warren, president, Washington Gas Energy Services. “We will continue to develop new products, such as CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets, that make it easy for our customers to reduce their carbon footprint.”

To date, the Carbon Reduction Fund has been used to support the planting of 9,000 trees on 45 acres in Anne Arundel, Frederick, Talbot, Carroll, and Baltimore counties …read more
