Geneva: Volkswagen Golf Variant will make a lovely Jetta SportWagen

In addition to several other versions of the Golf, Volkswagen is debuting the new Golf Variant (read: wagon) here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. And if this bigger version of the Golf looks like it might fit right at home in the States, it’s because we could possibly see some version of this car as the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here on our shores.

Volkswagen is debuting the Golf Variant with two efficient diesel engines, rated at 110 and 150 horsepower, the smaller of which is good for an impressive 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle (when mated to a six-speed manual transmission). The Golf Variant also gets a version of Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, making it incredibly all-weather capable.

It’s a handsome estate, and it wears the new Golf’s design language well. We can’t say for sure if this car will actually make its way Stateside, but given the fact that the current Jetta SportWagen still rides on the old Golf platform, the odds look to be in our favor.

2015 Volkswagen Golf Variant / SportWagen: So Much Trunk for Your Junk

One of our favorite cars for the daily grind, the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, is on deck for replacement. We don’t yet have confirmation what the new version will be called in the U.S., but we now have details and know what the car looks like. Launched at the Geneva auto show, this is the European-market Golf Variant. (Variant is what VW calls station wagons in German-speaking markets.) In our neck of the woods, it could be called Jetta SportWagen, Golf SportWagen, or simply SportWagen. Using Jetta branding wouldn’t make much sense, though, as the Golf VII and Jetta VII don’t even share a platform, as their predecessors did. READ MORE ››

Official: Europeans get first crack at new Golf Variant wagon

Just last week, when we brought you news of a new Volkswagen Golf variant out and testing in Europe, we had no idea we were being so literal with out description. For it seems that VW has every intention of calling its new Golf wagon, making its Geneva debut, the “Golf Variant.”

Odd/interesting sobriquets taken as read then, there’s a lot to like about this new small wagon from VW. The Variant will shed some 232 pounds in this generation, and will come to market with two efficient TDI engines. Volkswagen isn’t giving us displacement figures for either yet, but we’re told the diesels will come with outputs of 110 and 150 horsepower. The 110-hp TDI BlueMotion Varient will be good for a whopping 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle, when mated to the six-speed manual transmission.

The German automaker has brought along an all-wheel-drive 4Motion version of the Gold Variant to bow in Geneva, as well, and a natural gas-burning TGI BlueMotion is said to be “in the pipeline.”

No word yet has to when or how the Golf Variant will make its transition to the US market, though there’s a decent likelihood that some version of it will become our new Jetta SportWagen. Europeans can expect the Variant to appear for sale in August of this year.

First Images of New Volkswagen Golf Variant / SportWagen Break Free [2013 Geneva Auto Show]

The appearance of the new Volkswagen Golf Variant / SportWagen shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone familiar with VW’s recent work. And with the all-new MKVII Golf appearing last fall, it was only a matter of time before we saw a new Golf Variant—that’s German-market-speak for “wagon”—the previous version of which was sold here as the Jetta SportWagen. Thanks to a few images leaked somewhere between Wolfsburg and the nether regions of the interwebs—from Russia, perhaps—we now see that the new wagon wears a rakish set of duds largely cribbed from its stablemate.

The new model eschews the bulbous rear of the old car in favor of a look that falls in line with VW’s more-creased current design language, and it also sports Wolfsburg’s latest taillamp style. Full details will have to wait until later, but we have a good idea of what to expect. A U.S.-market version should be available with a 1.4-liter turbo four or a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel under the hood, with transmission choices including VW’s DSG dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual. The outgoing Jetta SportWagen made use of the PQ35 architecture, but this new model will share its MQB bones with the new Golf.

Further questions remain regarding the car’s name in this country; the “Jetta SportWagen,” “Golf SportWagen,” and “SportWagen” monikers are all in the running. Regardless of the car’s name on this side of the pond, it will head into production later this year. The MkVII three- and five-door Golf hatchbacks don’t arrive here until the spring of 2014, so don’t look for this in American dealerships until after that.
