911 Computer Dispatch System Goes Down Amid Series Of High-Profile Failures

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Emergency rescuers were forced to take up pencil and paper Monday as the citywide 911 system crashed again, an FDNY spokeswoman confirmed.

The compter-aided dispatch system went down several times, leaving ambulance drivers and first-hand responders searching for addresses that couldn’t be pulled up, and hunting down victims’ phone numbers that had gone missing, sources told DNAinfo.com.

Man dies after heart attack at JFK airport after doors at new terminal delay responders

A man died after suffering a heart attack at Kennedy Airport after two teams of first responders failed to reach him — because their electronic ID cards couldn’t open secure doors at the newly renovated Delta terminal, The Post has learned.

Precious minutes were lost due to the tragic snafu, which unfolded early Saturday when Gunseye Adekunle, 50, of New Jersey, collapsed in the $1.4 billion Terminal 4 while he was preparing to board an Arik Air flight to Nigeria, sources said.

A call went out for help, but what happened next was a massive mix-up.

“You had all the assets needed to keep this guy alive, but they never really had the chance to help him,” a law-enforcement source said.

A Port Authority police emergency operator got the call at about 6:30 a.m. and was told Adekunle was “unresponsive” but breathing.

One minute later, a PAPD ambulance known as Medical One was dispatched — but the crew reported being unable to enter the terminal from the street two minutes afterward because an officer’s security card wasn’t working.

“Access denied at elevator,” a radio transmission noted.

The trouble delayed the Medical One team for two vital minutes, but then they were able to get into the building by another route and get to Adekunle.

The Medical One rescuers are only EMTs, however, and the plan was for an FDNY crew of better-equipped and better-trained paramedics to arrive and take over.

But that second rescue squad also ran into frustrating issues with security doors. At about 7:10, the Fire Department responders were denied entry when the security system refused to recognize an ID access card used by a PA cop escorting them. The delay robbed the dying man of more precious seconds.

“Seconds are critical when responding to a cardiac event,” a source familiar with the incident said, “and unfortunately, unnecessary obstacles take away those critical seconds and possibly a patient’s fighting chance.”

A source said the cop used his card twice at one entry point and again at a second, but was unable to lead the FDNY team inside.

New York man arrested in meat cleaver attack on wife

A man in Chinatown was arrested after allegedly attacking his wife with a meat cleaver before being stopped by two firefighters.

MyFoxNY.com reports that the firefighters were going through their regular morning routine when they witnessed the assault and immediately responded.

According to MyFoxNY, security cameras caught much of the incident. The footage shows a man identified as Ming Guang Huang, 28, being restrained after attacking his wife, identified as Jinyia You, 24.

“I hear a commotion in the street, I look over, there’s a man dragging this woman, grabbing her by the arm, dragging her, she’s crying and she’s screaming,” firefighter Jose Ortiz told MyFoxNY.com

Ortiz, an18-year veteran of the FDNY, said he was shocked and horrified by what happened next.

“He pulls the cleaver out of his waistband and starts hacking at this woman, I rush him, I’m trying to grab the cleaver, but he’s swinging.”

Huang hit You six or eight times with the meat cleaver while repeatedly screaming, “She’s my wife,” a witness told MyFoxNY.com.

As Huang was being restrained, You, disoriented and panicked, managed to run off, leaving behind her shoes and a bloody sweater, the report states.

Firefighter Shane Clark pursued You, who was able to be bandaged by the firefighters before police arrived and took Huang into custody.

New York‘s Bravest told MyFoxNY.com that they considered it all part of a day’s work.

“We come across all kinds of stuff in our career; our first reaction is always what can we do to help – today was the same thing.”

You is reportedly in stable condition. Her husband was treated for a laceration and faces charges including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment.

Over a dozen injured on New York City ferry after it slams dock

Over a dozen people were injured on a commuter ferry after it hit a dock in Lower Manhattan Wednesday morning, the FDNY said in a statement.

Those injured were being treated at the scene. There were no immediate details of the injuries.

Fire fighters were seen setting up a temporary staging area on the dock with stretchers and other medical equipment and some passengers were being removed from the ferry on stretchers for evaluation.

New York City‘s emergency notification system sent an alert that emergency personnel were on the scene investigating and commuters should expect delays in the area.

Fox 5 News reported that the boat was the Sea Streak Ferry, which provides daily service from Atlantic Highlands and Conners Highlands in New Jersey to Pier 11.
