Maryland dig seeks proof of 1st free black community

EASTON, Md. (AP) — Archaeology students have been sifting through a little patch of ground on Maryland’s Eastern Shore this summer, seeking evidence that it was home to the nation’s first free African-American community.

Historians say hundreds of free blacks once lived in the area, while plantations flourished with hundreds of black slaves not far away.

The students from the University of Maryland, College Park, and Morgan State University have been digging behind what is now the Women’s Club of Talbot County. The building, part of which dates to at least 1793, was home to three free non-white residents, according to the 1800 Census….

Warrant: Rag used to set Va. Eastern Shore arson

Court documents say the man who confessed to setting the latest arson on the Eastern Shore of Virginia used a rag from his auto shop to light the abandoned home on fire.

Charles R. Smith and his girlfriend, Tonya Bundick, have been charged with arson and conspiracy to commit arson in the case. State police say the couple is responsible for all but a handful of the 77 arsons set on the Eastern Shore since November. Additional charges are expected.

Smith is a former volunteer firefighter who owns an auto body shop in the Tasley community. According to search warrants released Thursday, Smith told authorities he tore a piece of a towel off from his shop to light the fire. The warrants say police watched him set the fire.

Couple arrested in Va. arson case due in court

A former volunteer firefighter and his girlfriend are set to appear in court on charges related to rash of arsons set on the Eastern Shore of Virginia over the past five months.

Virginia State Police say Charles R. Smith III and Tonya Bundick are responsible for all but a handful of the 77 fires that were set on the Eastern Shore since November.

On Wednesday, they’ll make their initial court appearance on charges related to an abandoned house set on fire in Melfa late Monday night. The pair was arrested following a traffic stop early Tuesday morning shortly after the blaze was reported.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the pair had an attorney. Though they were charged Tuesday in only one fire, state police say more charges are likely.

Another arson occurs on Va.'s Eastern Shore

Virginia State Police are investigating another arson on the Eastern Shore.

State police tell news media outlets that an abandoned two-story wooden structure in Accomack County was burned Sunday night. The structure was off the road in woods.

More than 70 deliberately set fires have occurred on the Eastern Shore since last November. Most of the structures have been abandoned. No injuries have been reported.

A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Abandoned home latest arson on Va.'s Eastern Shore

An abandoned home is the latest arson target on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Authorities say the Thursday night fire is believed to be related to a string of arsons in the area. The home in Painter was uninhabitable and overgrown with trees and thick brush.

The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/10Yj4PT ) reports that another fire Thursday night near the front steps of a home in Greenbackville was deliberately set but not related to the other arsons.

More than 70 deliberately set fires have occurred on the Eastern Shore since last November. Most of the structures have been abandoned. No injuries have been reported.

A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
