Kotobukiya Explores Dead Space

While in the past Kotobukiya has tended to focus on Japanese video games and anime for their various statue collections, recent years have seen the company shift focus to include Western properties like Star Wars and the heroes of Marvel and DC. 2012 has even seen the company tackle Western video games like Mass Effect.

Dead Space is one of the newer licenses Koto acquired, and they’ve finally unveiled their Isaac Clarke ArtFX Statue just in time for the release of Dead Space in February.

Dead Space 3: Creation of a Co-op Character

Most games do co-op poorly. In most cases, Player 2 winds up as a throwaway character with no bearing on story direction. Even more likely, they’re a clone of the primary character, whether in appearance, skill set, or both. Dead Space 3’s John Carver defies the cooperative norm. Should you decide to bring him along on Isaac Clarke’s journey, the EarthGov Security officer becomes as important to the unfolding narrative as Isaac Clarke.

“We wanted somebody who would complement him that the story would find useful,” Dead Space story producer Chuck Beaver told IGN. Dead Space, Dementia, and Punishing the Heroes

The dementia caused by the Markers has always been a staple of the Dead Space franchise. Just being near them is enough to induce personality shifts, insanity and hallucinations, all of which usually lead to death. But the Markers affect people differently, and some characters in the series are more resilient than others.

In Dead Space 3, Isaac Clarke is much more resilient to the effects of Marker-induced dementia, having defeated his inner-demons in Dead Space 2. His mind still has the secrets of the Markers crammed into it, but it manifests more as an affinity for the Markers rather than a madness. This affinity has made him the closest thing there is to an expert on Markers. Ultimately, it’s why he’s pulled into this latest adventure.

Something worth noting is the amount of weapons that include damage effects for cooperative play — Visceral’s encouraging multiplayer not only through narrative benefits, but in-game upgrades as well.
