LA Mayor Election Results 2013: Mail-In Ballot Points To Close Race

LOS ANGELES — An early count of mail-in ballots Tuesday pointed to a close race for Los Angeles mayor.

The tally pegged city Councilman Eric Garcetti at 49 percent and city Controller Wendy Greuel at 51 percent, with about 2,400 votes separating them out of more than 130,000 counted in the mayor’s contest.

LA Mayor Runoff 2013: Eric Garcetti, Wendy Greuel Will Face Off Again In May (LIVE UPDATES)

The LA 2013 mayoral primary Tuesday came down to a runoff between Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel.

The polls closed at 8 p.m. Just after midnight, with 42 percent counted in the city’s unofficial results, Garcetti received 34 percent of the vote and Greuel 29 percent. Because neither candidate won more than 50 percent, Garcetti and Greuel will face off again in the city’s general election on May 21.

By 11:37 p.m. Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times called the election as a runoff between the two candidates. Both candidates acknowledged the upcoming runoff elections via tweets:

Five out of the eight mayoral candidates on the ballot have participated in city-wide debates. See HuffPost’s interview with each (in order of who’s leading in polls) here: Councilman Eric Garcetti, Controller Wendy Greuel, Councilwoman Jan Perry, Kevin James and Emanuel Pleitez.

If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes, a runoff between the top two contenders will take place May 21.
