By Maura Pennington, Contributor Mitt Romney’s poor performance in the election and the widening gap of years between now and the glory days of Ronald Reagan prompted the National Review Institute to focus on “The Future of Conservatism” at a summit this weekend in Washington, D.C. At times, the confident statement that framed the talks sounded more like a question: What is happening and what will happen to the conservative movement? As several writers and editors of the National Review noted while moderating the packed schedule of interviews, panels, and speeches, it was their founder William F. Buckley Jr. who referred to a conservative as “someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop.”
